Backers of the movement for higher pay point to studies saying that the average age of fast-food workers is 29 and that more than one-fourth are parents raising children.

Simon Rojas, who earns $8.07 an hour working at a McDonald’s in South Central Los Angeles, said he would join Thursday’s one-day strike. “It’s very difficult to live off $8.07 an hour,” said Mr. Rojas, 23, noting that he is often assigned just 20 or 25 hours of work a week. “I have to live with my parents. I would like to be able to afford a car and an apartment.”

Mr. Rojas said he had studied for a pharmacy technician’s certificate, but he had been unable to save the $100 needed to apply for a license.

Really, a single guys living with the parents and working at McDonalds for low pay cannot sort out how to save $100.00 to get an opportunity for a far better paying job.

While this might be true, it is not anyone problem to fix except his own. Mr. Rojas look in the mirror and stop making excuses.

For everyone in an industry that depends on your customer’s disposable income, just wait until January, when the new Obamacare increased premiums kick in. Then we will start to see how much money otherwise spent on things like fast food, entertainment, cable tv, will get routed to health care. I expect fast food to take a big hit, so “striking” for wage increases isn’t going to work.

Fast food is already overpriced for what you get - mealy tasteless burgers, limp cold fries, and watered down sodas.

You can go to any diner and get much better quality food for about the same price but it takes longer and you have to pay a tip.

Doubling worker pay will drive prices of the food up and it’s not worth what it costs now.

Look behind the curtain and you’ll probably find a contingent of enviro wackos/vegans who have been been trying to shut down McD, etc. for decades.

In the 1960’s I had min wage jobs paying 95 cents per hour. I got drafted, served my time, got out and went to school on the GI Bill, got better jobs. I guess I didn’t want to work as a dishwasher my entire life.

If the protesters do not work there, it’s not a “strike”

Yeah I've noticed that "picketing" has morphed into "striking". Basically this amounts to little more than harassment of small business owners by outsiders with no "standing".

My brother is 28 and he works at the same fast food place he worked at since he was in college. He got a degree in English.

He is the manager of 3 locations for a franchise owner. He gets paid okay, a lot more than $8.07 an hour.

Same here. I ended up getting my GED before I would have graduated and was recommending hiring school friends into the shop when they did graduate a year later.

I'm sorry, but anyone dumb enough to not know how to save OR EARN $100 to get a pharmacy technician's certificate HAS NO BUSINESS BEING a pharmacy technician!

DUH!!!!!!!!!!

Likely a strategy from the commie activists in the WH.

Mandate health insurance for business who employ workers 40 hrs/wk. Employers thus decrease hours.

Then mobilize workers to push for a wage hike since they're not making as much from decreased hours ...and businesses have to pay out the same even though workers' hours have decreased!
