Huge influx of Chinese students drives numbers of international students at US colleges

Hundreds of thousands of Chinese students are flocking to U.S. colleges and universities, helping to drive the number of international students studying in America to record levels. Similarly, all-time high numbers of American students are studying abroad, although there are far fewer and they tend to do much shorter stints than students coming to the United States, according to a report by the Institute of International Education and the State Department's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. They say international education programs do more than advance cultural enrichment. They also are an economic boon to communities that host foreign students and to the students themselves, who improve their job competitiveness.

My son is studying Chemical Engineering at Purdue. When he got there in 2011 there were thousands of Chinese. Former University President France Cordova, a flaming lib, opened the gates to them. Since Mitch Daniels became University President, Purdue has restricted the foreign admissions somewhat. But there are still a lot there.

I tell Aaron to watch his back with the Asian students and especially TA’s. He already knew that.

My niece went to Georgia Tech. She said it’s far worse there. The Asian profs run the faculty in the Engineering school and they blackball the American kids.

After reading numerous books on higher education institutions and admission policies you have hit the target here spot on.Among many other books I have read , back in 2005 I read on tome entitled “ The Chosen”by Jerome Karabel.
I only bring up this book on this thread as it applies to the “ivies” which most foreign students want to have admission to those types of colleges. Ivies LOVE full payers. LOL

The Chinese students I have dealt with and taught are in a much better position to excel in our college/university system than the vast majority of our own students.

You are dealing with a very select group, not a typical cross-section of Chinese students. They aren't all geniuses.

Maybe this means the ones who care enough to come? These aren’t your red neck Chinese that worked in the California gold mines.

Though I’d prefer the red necks, frankly. As better potential citizens.

I do believe eventually more Americans will study abroad, as more European Universities will try to tap the US market, to make up for falling numbers of college-age students in their countries.

Perhaps. But our birthrate is dropping as well. Yes, immigrants is propping up our population but they aren't reflected among eligible college-age students.

I believe it is more about the money gained from the tuition charged foreign students.

Yeah, if they're not up for it, they'll work in the factories.

Imagine that — Chinese students who live under communism are coming to America to be taught by American communist academics. It's a small world comrade.

Not geniuses just students that are raised in a culture where they highly value their education, have the discipline in the schools and at home, and spend the time necessary to learn.

You can rationalize this in many ways but it is all about the time they spend in school, studying, and the standards they are held to. The kids we teach are here because of their parents ability to pay for their summer trips not because they are selected for any academic achievements.

Or are you not actually an American yourself? Just wonderin'.

Born and raised here and retired US ARMY so poke away. So the point you are trying to make is that they don't have whiny little brats that the parents defend when the teachers and administrators try to discipline them or hold them accountable like we have here?

Great point you made, right on the money.

Are you a real American? What does it say on your DD214 or do you have one?

Born and bred. But that's not really the question is it, since my post already made that pretty much crystal clear.

retired US ARMY so poke away.

Already did, and all I got was a dodge, so I'll ask again, and see if you really have any good explanations or not: why would you spend your time training (Army term) foreign soldiers (very possible) instead of spending your time training the homeland troops, who per your claim are already behind in their abilities, as it currently stands?

they don't have whiny little brats that the parents defend when the teachers and administrators try to discipline them or hold them accountable

Which of course was my guess, but the question remains, why are you assisting those from abroad, when our own are the ones who actually need more assistance, per your own admission? You don't feel that the US is even worth defending any more? Or feel that the US is only worth assisting if we are taken over by these brilliant foreign students? Again, just a guess, but maybe again right on the money. And please do reply.

Golden Eagle. You have asked what I do for our own children. I work with them professionally most of the year instructing and teaching. I also donate about 400 hours a year working with the with disadvantaged youth through PAL. I also work as a youth leader in 4H, teach hunter education, youth archery and help with other youth organizations. I work with the foreign exchange students in the summer because it is a paying job. I'm a capitalist not a sniveler. Do you have a problem with some of the Chinese money making its way back into this country?

That is a clear and concise answer to your questions.

Now I have a question or two for you.

Do you have a DD214 of your own or did you stand back and let people with honor do your fighting for you? What do you do for the children of your community? Have you ever thought that exposure to other cultures might enhance a teachers teaching abilities? Have you ever thought at all?? Nope I didn't think so.

What were you doing when I spent over two decades of my life serving this country? What knowledge and education have you pursued so that you can better help and educate our youth?

I answered your questions, so man up and answer mine, or take the low cowardly road and just attack me again with worthless insinuations.

You have asked what I do for our own children.

Which was a relevant question, considering how your original posts kept touting the Chinese children as superior, and how you were helping them, with no mention of what you did for our own, who per your own statements are more in need of the help. Don't act as if the question wasn't fair, based on your original comments, and I appreciate you answering it, and am glad to know you're helping our children as well.

Now I have a question or two for you.

My entire family history is full of veterans who served this country, on both sides going back to the Revolutionary War. I myself have spent my entire career until this very day working for the Air Force, and will probably spend my whole life supporting the military, so long as it stays true to its mission.

Have you ever thought that exposure to other cultures might enhance a teachers teaching abilities? Have you ever thought at all?? Nope I didn't think so.

Actually, and apparently unlike you, I prefer the American culture completely over foreign ones, and don't like to see our culture watered down by those who don't respect or appreciate it. Chinese culture is based on barbarism, and fascism/communism, much like the Islamic culture, so importing people from cultures such as that only weakens our own. If you want to keep educating Chinese kids in your spare time, and learning their culture to later indoctrinate our own kids with it, there's nothing I can do to stop it, but I can let you know I disapprove. How would you felt if I told you I took my expertise in the military and was using it in my spare time to help people from other countries, because it pays and I believe in capitalism, and maybe you'll better understand my perspective on your statements.
