The Conservative War on the GOP
The Atlantic ^ | Oct 17 2013 | Molly Ball

Posted on 10/17/2013 4:54:44 AM PDT by xzins

On his radio show recently, Glenn Beck urged his listeners to “defund the GOP.” Sarah Palin has threatened to leave the Republican Party; Rush Limbaugh calls it “irrelevant.” The Senate Conservatives Fund has targeted mainly incumbent Republican senators for defeat. Erick Erickson, one of the right’s most prominent commentators, wonders if what's coming is “a real third party movement that will fully divide the Republican Party.”

Conservatives have declared war on the GOP.

Tired of feeling taken for granted by a party that alternately panders to them and sells them down the river, in their view, Tea Partiers and others on the right are in revolt. The Republican Party itself is increasingly the focus of their anger, particularly after Wednesday's deal to reopen the government, which many on the right opposed.

"Conservatives are either going to split from the GOP or stay home. They'll first expend energy in primaries, but if unsuccessful, they'll bolt."

Erickson, a former Republican elected official in Georgia... “I think the GOP is already splitting,” he said, with grassroots activists feeling “played” by elected officials’ unfulfilled promises to defeat Obamacare.

Steve Deace, an Iowa-based talk-radio host, said his audience has never been angrier. “They’re tired of electing a bunch of Republicans who care more about what the media thinks about them than what the people who elected them think,” he told me. “Why do I care whether John Boehner or Nancy Pelosi is the speaker of the House? Why do I care whether Harry Reid or ‘Ditch’ McConnell is the Senate majority leader? What changes? Nothing changes.”

Sean Hannity, on his radio show on Monday, said he’d previously opposed a third party, but “I’m not so sure anymore. It may be time for a new conservative party in America. I’m sick of these guys.”

If the conservatives are declaring war on the GOP, it's only a belated response to the undeclared, but no less real, war the GOP has waged on conservatives.

Or as I saw someone post on Twitter yesterday - if the GOP wants to reassure conservatives, they should remind them of all of their limited-government victories. Of course, they'll have to first find one...

There’s plenty of criticism. It just isn’t covered. The same way they didn’t cover conservatives occupying the war memorials last week. Barely a peep out of the media and the politicians. But, if it’d been a dozen pot-smoking, occupy derelicts PROTESTING at the war memorials about cash limits on the SNAP cards, they’d have been splashed all over the headlines for weeks.

The GOP is already split, that's why they lost the last two presidential elections. The GOPe side was trying to get the Independents. They got them, but the base stayed home twice. There are already two GOPs...the numbers prove it.

Just stop funding the GOP, send your money to Tea Party candidates only, financially starve the establishment GOP.

(Liberalism is a political cancer...it has infected the GOP, just as it has our national morality and religious organizations).

If Conservatives are so mad at the GOP-e why no criticism of Boehner’s cave in?

I'm trying hard to justify those who are praising Boehner, Cantor & McCarthy as leaders, while slamming the Republicans that voted with them last night.

Stripping the power of the purse from Congress means that Washington is now irrelevant. As Mark Levin states, only the state legislatures can save us now. The Constitution must be restored and only Article V. solutions are viable now. We have a very small window. We now live under a dictatorship and this is WNITER AT VALLEY FORGE.

PIPE DREAM:

Would a separation from the GOP only pull away the conservative wing of the GOP? Or, could it also pull in some of the Dems too? Within the Democrat party you have the centralized government progressives and the leave me alone liberals. Within the GOP you have the centralized military government progressives and the leave me alone libertarians.

Consider this thought. The “liberals” always proclaimed a desire for less government intervention. Does that differ drastically from Tea Party? If not, then could they not find a warmer home within a third party. Thus, leaving both the Progressive Dems and the Progressive GOP to start dating each other?

A principled Speaker and a supportive caucus could tell a president and a senate to take a hike and make it stick.

Unfortunately, we had neither. Out of 535 members of congress, only 90 combined out of both houses voted against the senate raising of the debt limit. That’s slightly less than 17%.

And some of them probably were on our side for purposes of political cover only.

Without conservatives, the GOP is nothing.

They’re about to find that out . . . Again.

But they will not learn from the experience . . . Again.

“I don’t think they care about the party. I think they care about issues and philosophies,” said Tom Davis, a former congressman from Virginia and onetime chair of the National Republican Congressional Committee.

That statement right there is why the recent stunt had no chance of success. The GOP has no interest in advancing any agenda other than its own existence.
The next step will be GOP funded challengers on the leaders of the TEA party, and maybe even endorsement of Dem's to get the TEA out.

The GOP sees the TEA party as a much bigger threat than the Dem's. The recent events have cemented that in their mind.

There will be a big push to attack the TEA party, funded by the GOP. In short, the TEA party over played their hand. In any organization, the first goal is to keep those in power, in power. The GOP sees the tea upsurge as a threat, and have convinced themselves it must be dealt with. They will be happy to throw a few more elections in order to keep control.

Conservatives (and conservative thought) deserve a party to voice their opinions? What an outrageous idea. Everyone, like Miss Ball, knows that the Republican Party should simply be a party of lackeys and submit to everything their Dem lords and masters desire of them.

If Conservatives are so mad at the GOP-e why no criticism of Boehner’s cave in?

I think the fact that a whole bunch of fence sitting Conservatives, who really wanted the GOP to move back towards its conservative roots, are now officially abandoning ship is criticism enough. The only thing that will keep the GOP above water, if it does at all, will be the fact that the TEA Party needs the GOP for access to the national stage.

My prediction will be that in areas where there is not a viable TEA Party candidate the Dems win, due to cross over voting by Conservatives in 2014.

What took you so long?

I was done back in 2005 when the Minutemen were on the Arizona/Mexico border and George Bush gave the Mexican Government the exact locations of where we were at.

We were Patriots trying to bring awareness to our open border problem, Bush said no we were VIGILANTES!
