'Disgraceful:' University suspends prof who hoped for murder of NRA children

Administrators at the University of Kansas have suspended the journalism professor who suggested on Monday he would like to see the murder of the children of National Rifle Association (NRA) members.

KU's chancellor, Bernadette Gray-Little, announced the suspension Friday morning, according to a local radio station, KMBZ.

"In order to prevent disruptions to the learning environment for students, the School of Journalism and the university, I have directed Provost Jeffrey Vitter to place Associate Professor Guth on indefinite administrative leave pending a review of the entire situation,” he said.

“Professor Guth’s classes will be taught by other faculty members," he added.

And on Thursday the school released a statement condemning Guth's tweet.

Speaking with Campus Reform on Wednesday, Guth confirmed it was he who sent the controversial tweet.

“Hell no, hell no, I do not regret that Tweet,” he said. “I don't take it back one bit.”

So much for the "heat-of-the-moment" theory.

Gack!!! I was in Lawrence last Wednesday night and Thursday morning returning from a trip out west. He looks like the guy I saw with a kick-me sign on his back as I walked into a Chili’s.

Lawrence, KS, the home of KU, is lovingly referred to by us in Kansas, as the Berkley on the Plains.

The University of Kansas is known, not so lovingly, as the University of North Korea!

Uncle Joe Stalin would find it way to conservative for Soviet students, though Chairman Mao might find hope to redeem it.

I hope the parents of the Hilltop childcare facility at KU had a few things to say to the Administration! I sure would if my child were in daycare on that campus!

” if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one.”
Jewish carpenter, Luke 22:36

Choices, choices - who will America choose to listen to.

That's quite a cherry picked quote from Jesus, at least in your application of it. Verse 37 explains the purpose of his statement. It was in order for another prophesy regarding the Messiah (Isaiah 53:12) to be fulfilled in him.

Jesus wasn't telling all of his followers to buy swords. Verse 38 makes that clear. When his apostles told him there were already two swords (among Jesus and the 11 faithful apostles) he told them that they would be sufficient. And then there is Matthew 26:52 that argues against your explanation of the scripture.

My two cents.

In the Kansas Regents system, an associate professor has attained tenure and a promotion from assistant professor (assuming they began their track there). Typically, an assistant professor is given 6 years to apply and successfully attract the support of his/her fellow dept faculty and upper administration (through publishing, teaching reviews, etc) to advance to associate professor.

Sometimes, people are hired as an associate professor with no tenure. Under this scenario, they may proceed for tenure after a 3 year period or so. These hires are normally hired from an institution where they were already tenured. But, in a new system, they must still undergo all of the necessary paperwork and document their accomplishments at the “new” institution.

There are no guarantees for attaining full professorship. I know people who have never been able to attract the support to move forward from their associate rank. On the other hand, I know of several people who have advanced quite rapidly (4 - 6 years) post attainment of their associate ranking. These individuals are highly productive and respected by their peers at the institution and across the country.

I am a professor at K-State and so, I think I know a little bit about how this game is played. Please don’t cast all of us professors in the same pot. There are many people in the agricultural fields that are conservative in nature. I am well known in my dept for being an especially strong supporter of the 2nd Amendment.

Many thanks for the clarification. It works a little differently on my campus but not much. And I would never place all professors in the same pot, especially not Classics Professors who are great guys, fantastic people, salt of the earth, and are grading the test I took yesterday afternoon, even as I type... ;-)

Oh, and it’s “he said”? Bernadette is a man? Yipes! I can’t keep up these days.

The professor should consider eating a salad once in a while.

My suspicion is that she deliberately left out those two key words “with pay.”
