LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) The Los Angeles County Coroner Tuesday classified journalist Michael Hastings death as accidental.
Hastings, 33, died in the early morning hours of June 20 when his Mercedes crashed into a tree at a high rate of speed in Hancock Park.
The coroner listed traumatic injuries sustained in the accident as his cause of death.
Toxicology tests also discovered that a small amount of Methamphetamine and Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) was detected. Levels indicate prior, but not recent usage, the report stated.
Hastings, a contributing editor at Rolling Stone, won a George Polk Award for magazine reporting for his cover article The Runaway General in 2010.
At the time of his death, the award-winning writer believed he was being investigated by the FBI.
Nothing about WHY his vehicle was speeding out of control?
All accidently. Y'see.
Another junkie, just like his cellmate Matt Taibbi.....
“Levels indicate prior, but not recent usage”
Calcs from the security camera that showed him speeding by then the explosions are that he was driving about 35 mph.
I guess Coroner technicians wont be dropping dead from arsenic poisoning this time (as LA County Coroner tech Michael Cormier did, the day his office released the Breitbart autopsy report to the public).
It really is like something out of a Philip K. Dick novel.
Yup, folks, he was just standing there, and his dashboard just up and slammed him up side the head. Yeah Sir.
The coroner wants to keep his job and continue breathing.
Did they test his blood before or after they suddenly cremated his body?
Damn, I hate living in the new Soviet Amerika.
Now if only the Breitbart conspiracist crazies can be convinced that he truly did die of a heart attack rather than ..........whatever..........LOL!
Maybe the same reason why our nation is riddled with late night auto accidents caused by out of control drivers thinking they're Indy drivers?......Nah, no way.
You know, they had to set an example: publish a story we don't like and several years later we might kill you in the most needlessly complex way ever conceived.
Our production studio is close by to the accident and driven on that road early before dawn. You could speed up Highland as there’s almost no one driving there during these times. The Highland road is mostly used to drive faster on route to LAX, even the shuttle buses take it.
as opposed to slowly cremating? I think that already happened just after the crash...
So I guess we should believe that the meth caused Michael Hastings’ body to undergo a spontaneous explosion?
If they can put in a car bomb, they surely can find some meth and THC for the blood and tissue sample. Don’t hold your breath for an independent autopsy; it’s probably too late now anyways because of evidence tampering.
Prove the researchers wrong! You can make your mark on the world by showing cars CANNOT be hacked! Get to it!
Accidental,,,Yeah, that’s the ticket!
One wonders how many excuses the freeps can keep making for the bodies piling up.
All it took was a bomb or two(there were apparently two or even three explosions including the gas tank). He didn’t hit the palm tree very hard.
“The Highland road is mostly used to drive faster on route to LAX, even the shuttle buses take it.”
Hmmm I suspected as much.
Some “mystery commenters” kept telling me Highland wouldn’t be used when traveling to LAX.
They started naming every paved surface on earth, EXCEPT Highland, as the “best route” to LAX.
I think Hastings was rushing (thru red lights) toward LAX at 4:30am to catch an early flight around 6/7am, and do exactly what he said in his emails: “Go off the radar awhile.”
He’d spoken to Wikileaks hours prior, so perhaps he was heading to Europe.
In related story, the coroner “fell down a flight of stairs” yesterday but refused first aid.
So he did crash the car on his own, and the bombs went off?
“Some mystery commenters kept telling me Highland wouldnt be used when traveling to LAX.”
I’ve driven from that specific Shakey’s on Sta Monica using Orange, then you can link into Highland or either La Brea. But Highland is mostly used by Super Shuttle to head to LAX (I know, I’ve used it) and I also prefer the Highland route as most of my flights are early flights.
using the 110 is suicide unless you want to miss your flight
No one seemed to notice that the tree appeared undamaged - at least not to the level you would expect for a palm tree.
What if he was planning on turning onto Wilshere Blvd?
The list, Ping
Let me know if you would like to be on or off the ping list
Dead Pool file update
That’s Awesome, first time seeing
I mean, that’s terrible, no idea what that means... I was never here...
In the video it appears there was a small blast then a bigger one then the gas tank went. It happens beyond the range of the camera but you can see the flashes. I d idn’t think to save the URL of it.
Nice to see that the coroner has developed a survival instinct.
Nut-job Conspiracy Theory Ping!
To get onto The Nut-job Conspiracy Theory Ping List you must threaten to report me to the Mods if I dont add you to the list...
I wonder if any reporters are planning to keep an eye on the coroner’s spending habits for the next year or so?
I still am confused about why the engine exploded. I keep reading the MB cars never do this....
Thanks for the pings; post; thread. Very interesting. Coroner? Another gatekeeper for TPTB?
This is all Bull Crap.
One would think that Mercedes would be vociferously defending the safety of their cars.
Seriously: Would YOU contemplate purchasing such a death trap that engulfed the victim in flames in a low-speed front-end impact that didn’t even damage the tree?

To amend my own comments, some memorial pics posted online of ‘tree in question’ are from the opposite side. The damage to car & tree suggest an impact >60mph. Prior to this thread I had only watched the video from the car-cam that supposedly showed Hastings’ car traveling down the same road seconds before impact after running a red light; he was NOT going >60mph at that time but, having now seen the Pizzaria cctv footage, I estimate he was going 75mph upon passing the Pizzaria Mozza at Melrose, not being chased and drove straight into the tree with no braking.
Without respect to all the conspiracy theories, I would still think Mercedes would want to dispel any safety concerns about their cars; I’ve never seen a newer car become so violently engulfed in flames save for failure of key safety equipment, namely the inertial fuel cutoff safety switch, which would have cut the flow of fuel and should have prevented the fast/immediate inferno.
Hastings ‘should’ have survived the impact, save for the fire and assuming he was strapped in (without respect to injuries leading to post-crash mortality).
I’m on it just as soon as I finish my dissertation on whether mortar holds bricks together or apart.
