Good. I consider that a bonus.

... and if they/we can’t muster up a new party (which has to start on the local level), and insist we must ‘fix’ the GOP, we will need push hard to line up deep red state primaries early, and force them to be CLOSED primaries, else you’ll get another GOP light weight that’ll just roll-em over and fetch the slimy ball whenever Hillary throws it.

Again, that’s:

a) Closed primaries
b) More Conservative States early.
c) Take control of the primary debates - with our OWN moderators.

If we cannot do all of these things between 2014 and 2016, then we’re better off splintering into our own new constitution based political party. Anything else has proven to be a losing proposition.

Just my $0.02.

I don’t think a TRUE conservative republican candidate will ever be elected again. The days of Reagan in America are over. This nation is now One Nation Under Socialism. This nation will never, ever be what it was. America is dying. It is a self inflicted, give me free stuff, wound. Everything I grew up loving about this nation no longer exists. As a kid in the 50s and 60s, everything was great, of family, God, what was truly good about America. Most of all that has died or taken on new names.

We need to end this “open primary” business and we need to slam the liberal media whenever we can.

Medved: Another RINO on my ignore list.

The viability of candidates hinges as much on "charisma" as it does on "positions".

Romney was the best of a bad lot and many conservatives on this board refused to vote for him because he wasn't conservative enough.

Even still, charasmatic he was not. W/O a truly popular candidate we're staring down the barrel of a hillarity president.

God help us.

My exceedingly humble but correct opinion:

We FReepers should allow conservatives-baiting articles such as this one to die on the vine without comment.

Medved also makes the following points:

* When outspoken conservatives such as Rick Santorum, Michele Bachmann, Newt Gingrich, Herman Cain and Rick Perry failed to win enough backing to prevail with the Republican base in 2012, why would it make sense to expect them to do better with independents and moderates?

* In crucial, statewide races in 2010 and 2012, uncompromising conservatives like Christine O’Donnell in Delaware, Ken Buck in Colorado, Joe Miller in Alaska, Sharron Angle in Nevada, Richard Mourdock in Indiana and Todd Akin in Missouri won GOP nominations but lost badly in otherwise highly winnable Senate contests. Their experience illustrates the fallacy that stalwart conservatives always make the best candidates—if only Republican voters would be smart enough to nominate them.

Query: Don't you mean "if only the Reince Priebus-led Republican Party (GOPe) would support financially ALL Republican candidates that the voters select."?

Hmmm?

Mourdock and Akin made huge and extremely stupid gaffes and paid the price. Without the gaffes, they’d likely have been elected. Joe Miller, Sharon Angle, and Christine O’Donnell were inexperienced, had flaws, lacked support from the establishment, (or were outright opposed by the establishment) and were not ready for prime time. Bad and underfunded candidates who lack the support of the party establishment frequently lose no matter what the message. I don’t know about Ken Buck.

Perhaps Medved should also look at the performance of some of the moderate Republicans in southern states where the Republicans should have won elections. A Republican should have beat Nelson in Florida. Connie Mack, the candidate, could not have been any more establishment. Same for Liddy Dole in NC in 2008. Virginia Senate races have also been unfriendly to GOP establishment candidates.

What we’ve seen in recent years is the GOP establishment working actively for the defeat of conservative candidates in winnable races against Democrats (Sharon Angle, Christine O’Donnell, Joe Miller for example). At the same time they complain when conservatives don’t come out with passion and enthusiasm for candidates such as McCain and Romney.
