Israel will consider tightening its gun control laws this year, in response to a heightened rate of criminal incidents involving firearms.
Over the past several months there have been a number shooting attacks unrelated to terrorism.
Public Security Minister MK Yitzchak Aharonovitch (Likud-Yisrael Beiteynu)
plans to change the guidelines for issuing gun permits, so that applicants will have to receive approval from a psychologist in order to receive a license. If they fail that test, they will have to receive the approval from a psychiatrist.

*facepalm*
How stupid is this?
The only reason Israel is free today is crazy jews
with guns...
We would all be better off if muslims had to pass a
mental exam before entering politics.
They plan the same things that Germany did...wake up Israel!
They’ve already tightened them up quite a bit. At one time you just went to the gun store, took the gun you wanted, went into the range, and if you weren’t cockeyed you walked out with the gun. Now it’s a big procedure. It may have seemed worse because they switched government departments last year and there was a huge backlog of applications for a while. This is just more bureaucracy and grandstanding by politicians. They are not going to weed out anyone they wouldn’t weed out today.
Might be something to do with the problems with the Russian Mafia too, perhaps?
On another track, Why oh why release all those murderers, what was Bibi thinking? Any insight? I’m not in Israel anymore, miss it.
This is so stupid.
That said, it’s kept me in the reserves, so I can have a sidearm and a rifle at the house.
If youd like to be on or off, please FR mail me.

From the JPFO. Old, but there's been no significant liberalization. Note the limit on number of firearms, as in one, sometimes two. Not surprising given the fact that Israel's legal system is a British derivative.

The Israel Dept. of the Interior makes notification to the general public the requirements necessary for the obtaining of a permit to possess a firearm:
1. Applicant must be a permanent resident of Israel for 3 consecutive years prior to making application for a firearms permit.
2. Applicant must be 21 years of age.
3. The permit request must be for personal use, not to engage in the business of firearms sales.
4. Applicant must fall into one of the following categories:
a. Part-time reservist (volunteer) for 3 years- may own 1 handgun
b. Such a reservist (volunteer) is a member of a gun club - may own 1 rifle
c. Professional, licensed public transportation driver, transporting a minimum of 5 passengers - may own 1 handgun
d. Licensed animal control officer- may own 2 hunting rifles, *not* full automatic weapons, or semi-automatic weapons with a limited capacity magazine.
e. Full-time dealer of jewelry or large sums of cash or valuables - may own 1 handgun
West Bank and Gaza Strip Settlers:
1. A resident in a militarily strategic buffer zone, essential to the security of the State of Israel - may own 1 handgun
2. A business owner in these geographic areas - may own 1 handgun
Veterans:
1. Veterans of the Regular Army honorably discharged with the rank of non-commissioned officer, and veterans of the Reserve Army with the rank of regimental commander- may own 1 handgun
2. Retired law enforcement officers with the rank of sergeant - may own 1 handgun
3. Retired prison guards with the rank of squadron commander- may own 1 handgun
Individuals:
Upon presenting documentation that one is about to receive a souvenir, a prize, an inheritance, or an award of appreciation from the Israel military.
Man, that is bad, need rifles.
Actually Germany liberalized gun laws in the late years of the Weimer Republic and under the Reich, though Jews couldn’t own guns as non citizens. It’s a Western European thing, and as I noted Israel adopted what was essentially a British system.
Yes, plural, rifles. Shotguns too.
The 1938 German Weapons Act wasn’t a real “liberalization”. The only expansions of exemption were to people involved in the government.
Yes, post 33 gun ownership was essentially a function of political persuasion. As street law dictated in the late 20s. I was referring to the 28 act which reversed the 1919 ban on private gun ownership and confiscation of firearms in private hands. I dislike the analogy to Germany both because it’s false, private ownership was banned pre 1928, but also because the practical implementation of the 1928 law under the Reich, and as you state the 1938 law, would likely be perfectly acceptable to liberals. Their friends could be armed, disarm the dangerous conservatives. Glad we don’t live under a European system, yet.
This is THE reason I will never make aliyah. Israel denies its citizens the God-given right to self-defense. All the photos you see of gunned-up Jews are just active-duty soldiers.
On the guns I think it’s simply because the population has grown and there have been a steady number of incidents where people go off the rails and kill someone, but that has always been the case. The level of terrorism is way down. The society is just changing.
On the release of the prisoners, I’m stumped as are everyone. Defence Miniser Yallon made a cryptic explanation: bad choice or worse choice. They are doing this, as it would appear, for nothing, for public relations, to appease Obama, which is a horrendous reason. No one expects these talks to go anywhere especially since Fatah can’t speak for Gaza. The real problem is Iran. It’s possible it ties with a future strike. We will know at election time. Bibi came third a few elections ago because he was over-zealous as finance minister in hitting the poor and did a lot of apologizing to make a comeback. If it turns out this is more bad judgment, the people will punish him at the polls. Bibi is not a capitulater like Barak and Olmert, it’s a mystery why he is doing the release.
