Forget hacking accounts, computers or mobile devices - security engineers from Indiana have managed to hack the software inside the Toyota Prius and Ford Escape. Using a laptop wirelessly connected to the car's electronics, Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek were able to remotely control the brakes, the accelerate, change the speedometer, switch the headlights on and off, tighten the seatbelts and even blast the horn. The project was funded by a grant from the U.S Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency to highlight the security risks affecting modern-day cars. Miller, a security engineer at Twitter, and Valasek, Director of Security Intelligence at IOActive, are due to officially announce their findings at the Def Con 21 conference in Vegas the weekend of the 1-3 Augus

Engineers from Indiana have managed to hack the software that runs the electronics in a 2010 Toyota Prius and Ford Escape, pictured, so that the brakes, steering, speedometer and the car's electronics can be controlled remotely using a laptop................This is scary.

They recently did a bit of wet work on a rogue journalist, combining the remote control with a nice little explosive package which they detonated when the car was ‘safely’ isolated on the road doing 100mph. The little packaged sent the motor and transmission several yards away from the car before the car hit a tree due to the torque created by the mass leaving the vehicle. Jst to make sure no one discovered their work, they had the body cremated without consent. ... Your obamaroid government at work dontchaknow.

Wait. I think some conservative journalist was killed in a "mysterious" one car accident about a month ago. He was supposedly onto something and was going to blow the lid off of it, much like Andrew Breitbart was, before his 'heart attack'.

FR threads about the death (murder?) of Michael Hastings:

I’m glad these hackers were successful. Now maybe all the conspiracy nuts will shut up. It IS possible.

I’m also glad my Chevy pickup is old enough to not have all the latest electronics.

Black box recorders are coming to all cars in the 2015 model year. That’s just a little over a year away:

33 feet to the repeater/transceiver the spook stuck on your car.

It talks to the satellite.

Even if a car has an automatic transmission, isn’t using the shift lever mechanical? If it is, you could shove the thing into “PARK” and stop it that way.

Points would be ok, the cap on the coil would be bad as well as the alternator. Your radio would be fried too.

Actually the cap would only be hit if the points were open.

if you had a generator, it would be fine.

The steering on all cars is a mechanical linkage. They apparently were able to tamper with the power assist. I don’t see any way that they are able to change the direction of the steering.

As a guy who has designed the park mechanism in an automatic transmission, I can tell you they are designed to NOT engage above a certain (low) speed. Otherwise it would rip the housing apart due to the forces involved.

Some modern vehicles, my 2012 F350....Mercedes, activate the brakes on one side of the vehicle for various reasons.

On the F350, to cancel trailer sway or fishtail. On the Mercedes to make instant changes in direction to return a sleepy driver to his correct lane when a head on is imminent.

One could use that feature to cause a vehicle to leave the road.
