Boeing 787 Dreamliner Catches Fire in London No Passengers on Jet at Heathrow Airport; Cause of Fire Not Yet Known

Emergency and fire crews responded Friday afternoon to a fire aboard an Ethiopian Airlines 787 aircraft at Heathrow Airport, marking a fresh setback for Boeing Co.'s troubled Dreamliner jet that was grounded by global regulators earlier this year because of problems with its lithium-ion batteries.
A Heathrow spokesman said the incident involved an "internal onboard fire" on the aircraft, which was parked at a remote parking stand with no passengers in it.
The spokesman said that fire services were called shortly after 4.30 p.m. local time and that arrivals and departures were suspended for just over an hour, as is standard procedure to allow emergency services access. He said flights resumed shortly before 6 p.m.

They using the same GM chevy volt batteries?
We need a plane graphic on fire with the “your neighbors will be so jealous you flew on the 787” like the garage on fire volt graphic.
I would imagine in order to get flying again they had to fix all the 787s with the new solution they came up with and tested. If so this will be the first failure of the new fix.
So far the lithiums aren’t panning out for them.
That might raise the question if they had the fix done to the 787 for the lithium batteries. I wonder if they’ll be able to see if it was performed or not. Because that will make a big difference if this is still an ongoing issue or it was because they didn’t make the necessary safeguard changes.
Battery issue no doubt...
This is why I avoid new products for the first couple years that they are in service. Matters not if it is a car or plane. I’m just getting to the point where I might consider flying on the A380.

At Heathrow, television footage showed damage to the top of the jet's body near the passenger doors at the rear of the 787. That area of the aircraft houses the crew rest compartment, which sits above the passenger cabin. The 787's twin lithium-ion batteries are installed below the floor in electrical bays near the nose and between the wings of the aircraft, far from the damaged area visible in the footage.
boy o boy! If this fire is around the batteries, this could be very bad news.

FOX Radio News earlier today called the Dreamliner a “Boeing 737.”
I thought two things....
(1) Since when is the 737 called the “Dreamliner?” and
(2) Ethiopian Airlines uses 737s?
The A-320 series is highly dependable over its service life. I also liked riding in the A-340, but that might have been of a certain nostalgia for its four engine design, and its physical similarities with earlier airliners.
That is like trying to decide which Ethiopian or Somali food is best isn’t it?
TSA made the question moot, at least for me. I don't fly anymore.
The A-340 is a good plane, but it is my understanding the airlines aren’t enamored with them because of fuel consumption. I like the A320, but really am a Boeing guy. Airbus noises bother me, but just because I am not used to them.
My fav though is the 747. I was once lucky enough to fly upstairs on a British Airways 747 on a 12 hour flight. Very cozy up there. Of course being in business class helped.
Is that over the lavatory?
And just what are the firefighters trying to get to in this picture? Note there is no visible damage to the top of the fuselage yet - it is reasonable to assume the fire was still spreading inside at this time.
Whether it is the fault of Boeing or Ethiopian remains to be seen - but it's far too early to rule out yet another battery fire based on one photograph.
Not good for Boeing and not good for Charleston, SC.
I’ve flown locals in Africa but only as a last resort and then only the ones vetted by the air safety outfit we hired to manage our helicopter contracts. Even at that, you don’t want to know what goes on. I’ve read the audit reports.

Where does Charleston come into the picture? ETs 787s were not made there.

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -
A China-based airline company is receiving the keys to a brand new Boeing 787 Dreamliner Friday morning.
Hainan Airlines will officially take its first 787 Dreamliner during a ceremony at the Boeing Delivery Center in North Charleston. The aircraft was built at Boeing in North Charleston.
This is Boeing’s ninth 787 Dreamliner delivery. The first was taken by Air India.
Boeing is now making two Dreamliners per month at their North Charleston facility, with plans to make three per month by the end of they year.
Hainan Airlines is the 13th Airline to receive a Dreamliner.
I know that Hainan and Air India have taken the majority of CHS built frames so far. But I still don’t get why Ethiopians non-CHS built frames would create any problems for CHS - unless, of course, if the whole fleet is grounded again.
