This looks like total pilot error. The guy really pooched it up unless something else was happening on landing. Thank God people got out OK.

Pilot can stay in The USA and become a new guest worker. Part time job only. less than 29 hours a week at McDonalds. His co-workers: “Hey, you use ta bees dat Chinese pilot guy, or sum-thin”.

I always wondered if they would short change a passenger by 1 frequent flier mile if the plane didn’t make it all of the way to the terminal.

Seems clear now, the pilot landed short of the runaway, causing the aircraft to lose control...

The question now is why?

Dang, you couldn’t see any of that in the earliest pic. Lot worse looking from that angle!

Looking at the debris field on FNC’s live helicopter shot (from KTVU in Oakland), it looks like the aircraft may have landed short; debris appears to start at the end of the runway, versus down the runway, which would indicate the plane touched down on pavement. Landing short of the tarmac would explain why it broke apart.

Early reports indicate everyone got off safely. Thanks to God, and kudos to the cabin crew and the folks at Boeing.

Aircraft tail number is HL7742. Power plants are 2x PW PW4090 (Pratt & Whitney).

This page is already listing the airframe as "Written Off."

The rear pressure bulkhead was blown out rearward, causing the tail to blow off

I don't know about that. A bomb of that scale in the passenger compartment should have caused horrible pressure trauma to the passengers, along with flash burns. Doesn't seem to be the case.

Either the tail was knocked off by a nose-high touchdown short of the runway (simple, Occam's Razor explanation that seems to fit the early data) or was blown off by an external force -- SAM (less likely).

If there is verifiable information that heavy engine or fuselage components are on the ground in or in the water well short of the touchdown point then #2 seems more likely.

Until I worked for Boeing and met a bunch of the test pilots, never knew about the tail-drag process.
