Fiscal hawk Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) is known primarily for attacking reckless and duplicate spending programs in an effort to get our nation's budgetary woes under control through spending cuts.
However, in the NFL and other professional sports leagues, he may have found some serious revenue enhancements.
The Republican senator is hoping to go after the tax exempt status of the NFL and other leagues currently classified as "non-profits." The NHL and PGA would also fall into this category.
Coburn estimates that re-classifying the NFL would bring in as much as $91 million per year in additional revenue.
This is not the first time the NFL's status has come under assault. During the lockout in 2011, NFL Players Association Executive Director DeMaurice Smith used the line of attack as a smear against the owners.
It is unclear what kind of support Coburn has nor how the issue would immediately impact the NFL if such a change were to come into effect.

Its not a revenue problem. Just who does he think will end up paying these taxes?
I’m tired of these guys always looking for ways to get more money so they can waste it.
Might I auggest they look into spending less money.
Why is Coburn wasting his time on a minor issue like sports at a time when the country is rapidly going to hell? GOP, the Stupid Party.
Nothing more disgusting than a professional sports player...followed by the team owner...and , of course, the season ticket holders...
Make them all pay...
It is silly to consider the NFL as "not for profit."
At a minimum, let's call them what they are and if the issue is rampant taxation, then issue tax credits, or exclusions, or reprieves.
Let's just be honest about it.
Better yet, let's get rid of income taxes and these stupid distinctions and all other taxes but one, and institute a sole source of revenue for all levels of government, a sales tax.
I'm sorry, but someone explain how that could be. I understand the whole anti-trust thing with MLB, but professional sports leagues are not "charities" by any stretch of the imagination.
Coburn should focus on taxing trial lawyers' fees instead.
NFL full of liberals. Tax the hell out of them. Liberal sports for liberals.
Another big revenue alternative: tax Hollywood TV and movie producers $5 for each cuss word uttered by their characters.
Oh I agree they are not charities despite their significant tax payer support.
My point is if you tax them the cost will just flow through on ticket prices.
I’m sure the multitude of charities that benefit from PGA tournament donations would love to testify in their favor.
Can’t wait to see them call out the evil Republicans.
You’re supposed to get excited about Benghazi and the IRS.
Forget about the Republicans raising taxes or trying to raise taxes.
Its like Europe where they raise taxes and cut spending, but don’t balance budgets.
BALANCE THE BUDGET NOW....NO NEW TAXES......CUT SPENDING....
Is he the Senator who said Pelosi was a nice woman during the Healthcare town halls?
Good deal.
The NFL itself is a tax exempt organization. The teams however are not. The NFL is the association created to promote the competition between the individual teams.
He's gone nut's if I may say so.......
And I voted for the guy...
Well played..............
