Boston bombings: Sikh community in US concerned over backlash

Washington - Sikh Americans expressed concern over the possible backlash against the community in the aftermath of the twin bomb blasts in Boston marathon early this week.

Having a bitter experience after 9/11 and a target of hate crime, Sikh leaders urged the community to be careful and vigilant against any violence directed against them.

"In the past, any terrorist action which resulted in American lives, have led to negative impact and violence on the Sikhs who are often targeted due to their conspicuous appearance," said Dr Rajwant Singh, chairman of the Sikh Council on Religion and Education.

"Many Sikh places of worship have been vandalised and attacked in the aftermath of 9/11 and we fear that the Boston tragedy might trigger another wave of reaction against members of the Sikh community," Singh said.

"The Sikh community joins Americans of all backgrounds in expressing our profound condolences and sympathies to the people of Boston, and the participants of the Boston Marathon, after the horrific and tragic bomb attacks that killed and injured so many people," he said.

The Boston bombing, he said, has shocked the Sikh community which is still recovering from the attack at the Wisconsin Sikh Temple a few months ago.

"We feel the pain and suffering of the victims in Boston," Singh added.

"We are requesting everyone, Sikhs and Non-Sikhs, to come together and hold vigilance to show our resolve and solidarity with those killed and injured," said Inderpal Singh Gadh, chairman of Guru Gobind Singh Foundation, a Sikh center in Rockville.

Sikh leaders said this is a time for the community to pull together.

"We are asking all members of the Sikh community to be vigilant. We are urging all Sikh Gurdwaras (temples) to review their security procedures and to be in contact with their local police departments, possibly to request additional patrols," he said.

Meanwhile, many mosques all over the US held special prayers services for the victims of the Boston terrorist bombings. The prayer services were held in congregation during the early yesterday afternoon Sabbath services.

"American Muslim leadership must break this cycle of terrorism, demonisation and more terrorism. Islamophobic media bashing and school bullying is making the Muslim students depressed and angry and a few can resort to violence," said Dr Shaik Ubaid, the New York Co-chair of Muslim Peace coalition USA.

"American foreign policy of waging unjustified war is also a major contributing factor. The Muslim leadership must put in place programs to teach American youth peaceful ways of showing dissent," he said.

That reminds me of the Blazing Saddles scene where the towns folk say they’ll accept two certain ethnic groups (described in racist terms) but they would not accept the Irish.

I’d rather have a Sikh covering my back that an uninformed bigoted troll.

Amen to that!

I’ve known some folk who call themselves “Christian” while participating in robbery, rape and murder.

You must have interesting friends to be able to know enough self proclaimed Christians doing that stuff, as to make it significantly large a number as to be relevant.

lol....no kidding...just ask who has killed more Sikhs?

rednecks like me or Muslims and Hindus?

duh

I have nothing against Sikhs or Hindus cept most are Democrats and a bit different manners wise...folkways and mores they used to call it....some seem to act like their former Brit overlords a bit much

not many are assimilated really

they seem to just pocket up..and stay distinct

maybe high bred Hindus mix in more...their kids anyhow

I saw a pretty Indian girl tonight near Vandy smooching it up with a gringo boy...sadly a hipster looking prog...but she was pretty good looking...too pretty for his Prius driving ass

in all fairness to Hindus and Muzzies...Sikhs kill them too in quite the fashion when it suits them...just ask Indira Ghandi ...at some point..lol

I have many Sikh patients. They are invariably some of my most polite patients. I believe it is part of their culture. Some are difficult to understand though.

Several come for DOT physicals. It is somewhat surprising when I have them lift up their shirts to listen to their chest that they always have their dagger tucked neatly into their belt.

It is one of the 5 "K"s. That they carry a dagger to defend against injustice, like if they see someone being robbed, they are to use it to scare off the attacker. Not to be used in offense.

I’ve known some folk who call themselves “Christian” while participating in robbery, rape and murder.

really...how many personally?

I'm southern baptist...55 years old...have known not one soul who professed to be a devout Christian in my entire life who raped, murdered and robbed.

Did bad things..a few..cheated on spouses...most common sin....lied..another...bore false witness..yep

But acted like a savage...none

You must live in a very bad neighborhood.

“I have many Sikh patients.”

I hope you are prepared to read a few jokes about that line.

This IS FR, after all.

You are coming across like a Kos troll who is trying to parody a Christian conservative. Sikh's are ‘ok’. Yes, we want everyone to come to Christ - as HE is the only way to Salvation, but people are free to worship as they will. You cannot force someone to be a Christian (and in fact, most people who claim to be Christians are only lip service Christians). You can speak with a Sikh respectfully and honorably. If you can convince him to seek and trust The Lord - then great. If not, so be it. Islam is different and unique. Their book says to destroy. Don't lump the Sikhs and muslms together - it just shows ignorance. That said, we should also keep the muslms in prayer. No sane person would willingly choose that cult. You are borne into it, and it takes great courage and wisdom to leave it.

Rajwant Singh is a fake, phony fraud and a sellout, but he’s absolutely right on this.

9/11 was 12 years ago. They need to get over it. I'm sure just about every group out there has had a "hate crime" perpetrated against it at least once during the last 12 years.

You stated....”No sane person would willingly choose that cult.” (Islam)

That comment alone says volumes....

You’re greatly mistaken.... many people “choose” Islam and with certainty apart from being “born into it”....and that Worldwide as well as in this country.... Why do you think they have recruitment centers throughout the world?

I would highly recommend you educate yourself about Islam....as “anyone” with even a rudimentary understanding of Islam understands there are numerous people who “convert” to Islam.

The operative word is "sane".
That and the threat of death has supplied the converts to Satan's plague called Islam.

Sikh’s in this country generally have money and are professionals. Also they pretty much mind their own business.

Sanity has nothing to do with those who convert to Islam...though those who are are not exempt.

People ‘choose’...that’s the bottom line...the same as all other choices one makes in life. Sane and otherwise.
