Barack Obama can't pass gun control despite 90 per cent support.
The Telegraph ^ | April 18th, 2013 | Tim Stanley

Posted on 04/18/2013 5:45:28 AM PDT by apillar

Yesterday, the most modest of gun control proposals died in the Senate. It would have expanded background checks to people purchasing weapons at gun shows and online sales, enjoyed 90 per cent support among the public and came on the back of the tragedy at Newtown. Yet, despite all that it had going for it, the Toomey-Manchin bill raised just 54 votes – six short of the number necessary for passage. “This is a pretty shameful day for Washington,” said Obama afterwards. It wasn’t exactly a red letter day for him, either.

Barack Obama is a lame duck president. Nobody listens to what he says anymore, nobody is interested in winning his approval and nobody much cares if he thinks they have “let the country down”. This is typical for a second-term president who has lost all their leverage because they’re no longer running for office and everybody is patiently waiting for the day when he quits the White House. But Obama's difficult personality has doubled the size of the challenge. Gloating in victory, adolescent in defeat – the Prez doesn’t make it easy to work with him. Why should conservative senators give him a legislative victory after he has spent four years painting them as knuckle-dragging rednecks who hate women and the poor?

Whatever your position on gun control, yesterday’s events are a damning indictment of Obama’s presidency – a flash of style, lots of soaring rhetoric and, when the votes are actually counted, little show for any of it. America has four more years of this lame-duck president telling them that it has let him down. If only he could tear up the Constitution and rule by diktat he might save himself a little disappointment. Alas, American democracy is a stickler for rules.

exactly

MSLSD is using a poll done after the shooting and using it as if 90% of ALL AMERICANS support it .

Now the left wing nuts and haters are going mad and losing it while trying to keep their anti gun agenda back on track , even more so when they can’t even mention TX and the people in danger, lost homes, people died etc

This “90%” meme needs to be shot down quickly. You can’t get 90% of all the people to agree on anything, and 90% was never the correct number of people who wanted Toomey/What’s-his-name’s amendment. Obastard just pulled that number out of his ass, and people mindlessly repeat it.

Elections have consequences.

Especially those that failed to qualify, illegally certified and then won the election through fraud.

They become nothing, impotent.

tell that to MSLSD because all they’ve talked about this morning is gun control and how people are cowards and liars and the NRA are traitors etc.

They’ve not even covered the TX explosion and yet this is worse than Boston

Gun control, or what I like to call “unconstitutional infringement on the 2nd amendment” has never worked, will never work for the simple fact that it targets LAW ABIDING people and not crooks. In other words, it gets the law abiding public killed, the exact opposite of what the anti-constitutionalists intend (or do intend?) How many 2nd amendment unconstitutional infringements have been passed since 1980? Since Reagan was shot? Starting with the Brady bill? Countless. Yet what has it done? What has it accomplished? Nothing, except disarming LAW ABIDING people which has directly led to their death in countless examples from being unable to defend themselves. Now the anti-constitutionalists want yet again more infringement as if the 2nd amendment isn’t infringed enough. Why aren’t Republicans saying “enough is enough” We do not want anymore gas station attendants killed, women raped, robbery victims slaughtered, we want their right to self defense reinstated. But nooo, instead they crawl into fetal positions and hide every time the anti-constitutionalists want to infringe yet again on the 2nd amendment.

I was like you and thought not discuss politics but then I thought why should I stop getting the truth out and shut up when they can still spout their lies to the low info voters.

Good luck, networks like MSLSD is doing all they can to the low info voters to get their talking points out

An attack on Boston is an attack on Neo Europa central. Two deaths on the streets of boston trump a hundred deaths in the wasteland of Texas.

The attack on the non americans in boston is a terrible tragedy. The death of real Americansin Texas stands for naught.

“... enjoyed 90 per cent support among the public...”

The lie that the MEDIA generated just crapped in their faces!

I love it how the MEDIA states, “this is what people want to know.”

When actually - it’s what the MEDIA wants people to know - the control of information...THANK YOU FREE REPUBLIC - Free minds reading and discussing topics without journalist input!

This opinion piece is a load of crappola.

“Dr Tim Stanley is a historian of the United States”

Another liberal “historian”. History is what he wishes it was, facts as determined by him.

Pretty sure is was 90% of 1,925 likely voters. Who just happened to be radical left wing extremist demokkkrat scumbag socialists who would like nothing better than to disarm the law abiding victims of the compromised states of America. Or maybe they had help from mikey mann and they used his hockey stick. Possibly they sacrificed a chicken or goat to come up with these numbers. If not, then the other 10% have sure bought a WHOLE lot of guns and ammo in the last few months. 500 rds .22lr for $149.00!!!!! WTF?

Boston small explosions and it’s massive news by the left wing news, and yet massive explosion in TX and MSLSD can’t even cover the fact.

it goes to show how the elitist left wing radicals view the south and heartland America and Americans.
Funny how they like to come down here and buy their vacation houses and vote down here while they still live up in their big elitist yuppie liberal city.

Its not the law...but its hard to find an internet gun ad, without the footnote that the seller will require an FFL licensed dealer to finish the transaction - he will do a background check. If I sell to a stranger, I could be liable for what he might do (especially if he is a felon and I don’t know it), but an FFL dealer is immune. So, I’d certainly pay a dealer 30 bucks to do the transaction...but its not the law.

Now Barry stated that only 60% of sales are currently done with a background check. I call BS - he is probably citing some stat than includes illegal and underground sales.
