Millions face starvation as world warms, say scientists
The Observer ^ | Saturday 13 April 2013 16.00 EDT | John Vidal

Posted on 04/14/2013 1:25:05 PM PDT by DeaconBenjamin

Staple foods will more than double in price by 2050 from extreme temperatures, floods and droughts that will transform the way the world farms.

As food experts gather to discuss how to feed the nine billion people expected in 2050, leading scientists state that food insecurity risks turning parts of Africa into permanent disaster areas. Rising temperatures will drastically affect access to basic foodstuffs:

"Food production will have to rise 60% by 2050 just to keep pace with expected global population increase and changing demand. The annual production gains we have come to expect … will be taken away by climate change. We are worried about the vulnerability of the one billion people who are without food already and who will be hit hardest by climate change."

The draft US National Climate Assessment report predicts that a gradually warming climate and unpredictable severe weather will have serious consequences for farmers.

All crops will be affected by the temperature shift as well as livestock and fruit harvests, with more pests and less effective herbicides. The $50bn Californian wine industry could shrink as much as 70% by 2050.

The report follows recent disastrous harvests in Russia, Ukraine, Australia and the US. In 2010, climate-driven factors led to a 33% drop in wheat production in Russia and a 19% drop in Ukraine. Separate climate events in each case led to a 14% drop in Canada's wheat output, and a 9% drop in Australia.

The UN's World Food Programme director, said: "Climate change is the game changer that increases exposure to high and volatile food prices, and increases the vulnerability of the hungry poor, especially those living in conflict zones or areas of marginal agricultural productivity. We must act quickly to protect the world's poorest people."

They are preparing the ‘ground work’? Readying not only a ‘starving’ population; but the scapegoating for it? Oh; yes; not these ‘world Leftist ‘isms’ at work; but yes; the ‘warming’ - that is not; of course.

It's cold. You may have noticed. We have just emerged from the coldest March since 1962 into an April showing few signs of improvement. The long winter has blighted our wildlife and livestock, harmed our health and sparked fears of a triple-dip recession. But a few people – woolly-hat sellers, for example – have had a frozen field day. Here are the long winter's top winners and losers.

Our terrible spring: the winners and the losers

Winter's hold on Germany lasted longer than usual this year, taking its toll not just on the moods of residents, but also on a number of economic sectors. Construction, agriculture, service and retail are all suffering, and experts warn the effects could be long-term.

Just last Friday, Dirk Nüsse stood at the summit station of his ski lift, looking out at the landscape incredulously. According to the calendar, it should have been spring there a long time ago, but before his eyes a snowboarder was cruising by wintry spruce trees, while frost-covered cable cars conveyed a seemingly endless number of winter sports enthusiasts up the mountain.

There is a thick blanket of snow on the Wurmberg, a peak in central Germany's Harz Mountains, one of the few places profiting from the cold weather that has held Germany in its grip for months. "The entire country is suffering from the cold temperatures, but we're clearly the winners of this long winter," says Nüsse. The 56-year-old manager of the Wurmberg cableway is glad that spring simply refuses to come this year. Ski season is normally over by mid-March, but he has just extended his winter operation by yet another week, which means that some 15,000 additional holidaymakers intend to hit the mountain's seven slopes. During a long winter like this, Nüsse's lift earns twice as much as usual.

Caught in the Cold: Long Winter's Grip Chokes German Economy

The Guardian...draft US National Climate Assessment report...the EPA...organised by UN World Food Programme...the CGIAR Research Programme on Climate Change...the Mary Robinson Climate Justice foundation.

It has been conclusively demonstrated that the whole "climate change" farce is a hoax.

Yet, all of these institutions -- who have a stake in "climate change" -- believe they can maintain the lie. And they continue to pursue their political agenda (and profit motive) with a seemingly straight face.

Is it not illuminating that liberal institutions actually believe they can effectively propagate a monstrous lie against all the facts?

In this regard, the media is invaluable...and totally without scruple.

“food insecurity risks turning parts of Africa into permanent disaster areas”

If the rise turned Africa into 81% permanent disaster, that would still only be 1%.

“Starvation is caused by socialism, history says”

Exactly. And socialism has been supported by the same ‘academy’ that is propping up the unproven science of anthropomorphic global warming. Actually, for those with nothing better to do on this beautiful Sunday afternoon, it would be an interesting exercise to catalogue just how many times the ‘academics’ have been on the wrong side of history. We always point to the idiotic battle the church waged against science when geocentricism was shown to be false. We don't ever, however, recognize that the academy has often been on the side of movements and people who were horribly wrong and who went on to be responsible for millions of deaths. I'm sure Stalin was a hero to many in the ‘academy’. There are no idiots like those idiots who think they are particularly smart and clever.

What we’re probably going to see though is a 2 degree drop (due to a senescent sun). Millions will starve.

Predictions used to be 10 years this, 10 years that. But the predictors got smart
and started predicting past their life span to save themselves the embarrassment.
Essentially they make predictions to give meaning to their lives and bask
in the momentary glory of being smarter than everyone in the room. What happens after
death is meaningless and they cannot be held accountable. Alive, they can.

This is the anti-human left. Please look at John Holdren, Science Czar for Obama - he promoted sterilants in the water supply to cut down populations. Who thinks like that?

Save the spotted owl but destroy a hundred thousand families, that is a good trade in their green calculus - now these unemployed workers cannot afford children. And the planet wins.

Find out who those scientists are and then give them Zero credibility for the rest of their lives.

History shows that during periods of General warming there was more food- Not less. Droughts are caused by other factors and run in cycles of just a few years.

Then there is the problem that warming is not actually happening right now.

As far as the cost of Food. I believe it has already just about doubled since the current administration took office. And it is was caused by warming that is for sure. It was caused by bankers and government.

Actually, when the Chinese take over, they will teach the Africans how to plant GM food, use chemical fertilizers, and probably spray DDT to get rid of the tsetse fly so they can convert the savannah with all those animals beloved of National Geographic into farms which the National Geographic hates.

The high veldt in Africa could be a bread basket, but the Europeans discouraged the green revolution etc. The Chinese need the resources, so will develop them (and steal them) making locals rich.

The economic changes in Africa in the last ten years rarely hit the MSM, but things are changing for the better.

Climate change is not a “hoax”: climate changes all the time. Medieval warm period, the collapse of the old Kingdom of Egypt, the Bronze age collapse, the year without the summer, etc.

The real question is if we are entering a warm period (maybe as warm as during the Roman empire, when they grew grapes and had palm trees in England) or if we are entering a “little ice age” like the one that preceded the Black Death...

and pollution is also a problem.

But these bozos are making propaganda to establish a one world order. And that scares me.

Climate change is not a “hoax”: climate changes all the time.

Of course, it does.

I should have been more specific: i.e., AGW (anthropogenic global warming) is a HOAX!

And "pollution" -- while it may be a problem -- is not related to the phenomenon of "climate change".

To scientists, these seemingly disparate incidents represent the advance signs of fundamental changes in the world’s weather. The central fact is that after three quarters of a century of extraordinarily mild conditions, the earth’s climate seems to be cooling down. Meteorologists disagree about the cause and extent of the cooling trend, as well as over its specific impact on local weather conditions. But they are almost unanimous in the view that the trend will reduce agricultural productivity for the rest of the century. If the climatic change is as profound as some of the pessimists fear, the resulting famines could be catastrophic.

I just hate these predictions!

Now I don’t know whether to invest in long foodstuff production, or in carbon credits.

Maybe I’ll just have to move some gold high into the mountains so the high water won’t gobble it up!

60-80 thousand years of serious glaciation would cool mankind’s jets quite a bit wouldn’t it? Can you imagine what it would take to drill for oil and gas with 1-3 mile thick ice caps over the land? And boy would we need it!
