Millions face starvation as world warms, say scientists
The Observer ^ | Saturday 13 April 2013 16.00 EDT | John Vidal

Posted on 04/14/2013 1:25:05 PM PDT by DeaconBenjamin

Staple foods will more than double in price by 2050 from extreme temperatures, floods and droughts that will transform the way the world farms.

As food experts gather to discuss how to feed the nine billion people expected in 2050, leading scientists state that food insecurity risks turning parts of Africa into permanent disaster areas. Rising temperatures will drastically affect access to basic foodstuffs:

"Food production will have to rise 60% by 2050 just to keep pace with expected global population increase and changing demand. The annual production gains we have come to expect … will be taken away by climate change. We are worried about the vulnerability of the one billion people who are without food already and who will be hit hardest by climate change."

The draft US National Climate Assessment report predicts that a gradually warming climate and unpredictable severe weather will have serious consequences for farmers.

All crops will be affected by the temperature shift as well as livestock and fruit harvests, with more pests and less effective herbicides. The $50bn Californian wine industry could shrink as much as 70% by 2050.

The report follows recent disastrous harvests in Russia, Ukraine, Australia and the US. In 2010, climate-driven factors led to a 33% drop in wheat production in Russia and a 19% drop in Ukraine. Separate climate events in each case led to a 14% drop in Canada's wheat output, and a 9% drop in Australia.

The UN's World Food Programme director, said: "Climate change is the game changer that increases exposure to high and volatile food prices, and increases the vulnerability of the hungry poor, especially those living in conflict zones or areas of marginal agricultural productivity. We must act quickly to protect the world's poorest people."

And yet the Warmer crowd politically supports legalizing illegal immigrants and adding one million plus legal ones, which overwhelmingly crowd into the cities, causing urban sprawl and paving over fertile farmlands to make room. Not to mention trashing out the areas. Sheer genius.

Don’t you just love the way these “scientists” use one assumption and come up with predictions pulled directly out of their backsides?

Who knows? Maybe, IF the world warms, more land will be arable.

Hey, maybe, if the world warms, the sea level will rise and my landlocked house will be OCEAN-FRONT!

oy vey...

one more time: the debunked glow-Bull warming leads to increased crops, abundant food supplies.

Alternatively, the much more likely, almost certain, Global (reverse-sic) Cooling that we WILL experience, evidenced by a long stretch of little to no sunspots and caused by changes in the Sun’s output, WILL lead to crop failures.

To sum up, anything that man does to avert Glow-Bull warming will, if it does indeed do anything, make the actual Global (reverse-sic) Cooling much much worse.

Food experts? I'd like to see their track record on predictions... and I'd like to know who pays their salary and if part of that comes from shaking down rich countries to aid countries known for giving kickbacks...

Communism: the worst plague ever on humanity and the lefties are still in love with it.

The only thing wrong about Global Warming is that it ain't happening. Global warming would open huge new agricultural production in Canada, Northern China and Russia --- and the more CO2, the better. It's atmospheric fertilizer: don't those so-called "experts" know that?

More warmth, more CO2, good gracious, it would be Eden again.

But no, we get stuck with what's actually happening, global cooling. Bah. I'm going to go out and burn some charcoal. And feed some eggshells to my earthworms. Tagline.

So, let’s just assume that there’s going to be the huge warming in the next forty years, and then let’s project a whole lot of pain because of it.

First, in the past few months, many have acknowledged that global warming hasn’t occurred in over fifteen years. The models projecting warming and sea level rise in the future are wrong.

Second, doomsdayers refuse to take into account how people will change their behaviors if the climate does change.

Odds at the outset are 50% the world’s warming.
Or, 50% it’s cooling.

Which would be worse for agriculture?

Of course their global warming predictions are nonsense but even so, their doom and gloom analysis of food production seems unrealistic.

They concentrate on factors that “could” reduce food output in areas currently in production.

Yet they seem to ignore the tremendous increase in food production their imaginary global warming would bring to places like Alaska, Canada, Siberia, Scandanavia, etc.

Sheer idiocy! So-called global warming would be good for mankind. Warmer seasons mean more grazing land for livestock and even warmer seasons mean more time for cereal stuff to grow. The medieval warming period (ignored by Mann; etc) was an explosion of creative activity where people built all of those beautiful cathedrals.

"more land arable"

Millions of square miles of land in Siberia and Canada are currently unusable for agriculture because of cold weather. Warmer temps would obviously make these frigid lands worth tilling.

I’m a lot more worried about cooling at this point. If we have a Dalton Minimum (or Maunder Minimum), we *will* have another famine. That’s not theory. That’s fact. No cars, no electricity, no “CFCs” last time that happened.
