An anti-military candidate who is womewhat squishy on social issues.

The Reagan coalition used to stand for pro-defense, Judeo-Christianity vis a vis social issues, and fiscal conservatism.

Paul is fiscally conservative, and to the left of some blue dog Democrats on the others.

What they are ready for is a conservative that supports everything in the Republican platform, and can articulate that in strong terms.

I think Republicans want a conservative candidate, not one who does not understand national defense, along with other conservative values.

My ideal is nothing more than equal solidness on all three legs of the stool... small-government fiscal conservatism, traditional values/social conservatism, and strong on national defense/sovereignty.

And in regards to the latter leg, a strong national defense and military is ‘not’ synonymous with wasteful nation building and unnecessary foreign entanglements.

Whenever just one leg of the stool is missing, liberal/progressive thought always manages to worm its way in and turn everything to crap.

He'll have to drop the Libertarian connection for me to give him any more consideration. Even bringing this up showed to me, at least, that he's not all that bright politically....plus he's roiling things up at a time we need cohesion against the GOP-lite.

But I'm not opposed to discussing his statements even though I think he's raising a hybrid flag no one will salute.....except the Libertarian tribe....and the Dems.

At this point I'm ready for any Republican who is actually conservative. I think the GOP is well on the way to becoming a marginal force in US politics. Nationally, it's traveling along the same road that the state GOPs in New York and California have already traveled - the GOPs in these states have pretty much disavowed conservatism in a desperate attempt to play "me too". No conservative principles, just a cynical attempt to be a weak-sauce version of the Democrats, and as a result completely irrelevant.

Poll after poll has shown that most Americans are basically conservative, and agree with core conservative principes far more than liberal views. It's a testament to how spectacularly the GOP has failed to represent those Americans that the US is now dominated by Democrats. I hoped the Tea Party would give rise to a new, principled, vigorous conservative political party, but apparently we haven't reached the needed critical mass yet.

I also believe the republicans need to make a slight adjustment to their stance on certain issues in a more libertarian direction. In particular, drugs. The Republican party needs to stand for freedom, and that includes the freedom to destroy your life slowly with drugs if you so wish.

In order to expand the party's reach, Paul believes the GOP should embrace candidates who are willing to push a less aggressive foreign policy, comprehensive immigration reform and less punitive measures on first offenders of nonviolent drug possession.
