How to siphon votes away from blue states
Washington Post ^ | December 11, 2012 | Brad Plumer

Posted on 12/16/2012 7:51:50 PM PST by neverdem

In most states, presidential elections are fairly simple. Whichever candidate garners the most votes wins all of that state’s electoral votes. There are two tiny exceptions (Maine and Nebraska), but that’s typically how it works. President Obama won a majority of votes in Pennsylvania, so he got all 20 of its electoral votes.

Over the past year, however, a number of Republican lawmakers in blue states have been pushing an alternative system. The states would split their electoral votes between different candidates. As Dave Weigel points out, this was first floated by conservatives in Ohio and Pennsylvania before the 2012 election, only to get shot down. But now the idea’s steadily making a comeback. So let’s look at some of the different proposals here — as well as what effect they would have had on the 2012 presidential election.

Pennsylvania I: Last year, Republican State Senate Leader Dominic Pileggi proposed a bill that would...

--snip--

Virginia: Ari Berman points to another recent proposal from Virginia State Sen. Charles Carrico Sr. This one goes much further than any of the above plans. Electoral votes get divided by congressional district. On top of that, another two electoral votes would go to the candidate who wins the most districts. So, in 2012, Obama won the popular vote in Virginia. But under Carrico’s plan, Romney would have received 9 electoral votes and Obama would have received just 4.

One common argument for these plans is that it gives rural voters a greater voice; Dave Weigel dissects that strange logic here. But there’s also an undeniable partisan appeal. As Berman points out, if GOP-controlled legislatures in Florida, Michigan, Ohio, Virginia, Florida, and Pennsylvania had all adopted versions of this vote-splitting plan, then Romney would have won the White House with 270 electoral votes in 2012...

Believe me, it got very bad- very quickly. You are quite correct in your hypothesis. Saw it first hand.

You and some of your neighbors/buddies need to strike out for some podunk town and do your damnedest to assimilate. Get out now while the gettin’s good.

You can find houses out there for $20K in some little non-descript berg, and probably within 45 minutes of a decent airport or Amtrak (just in case you need to revisit civilization.)

There’s no point in going real hermit, like deep Montana.

Hell, if you guys could pool enough money...you could buy your own town...it’s happened before.

They claim that in my state, SC, 71% want popular vote. No way!

Bullswoggle. I'd love to see their push-poll's payoff question, the one that asks for their key response.

Sound like denial.

Reality is, there's no way obama would have one if not for voter fraud.

Romney lost due to massive voter fraud, never said a word, and walked away a loser abandoning the nation to this tyranny. Suffice to say that romney was unworthy then and is unworthy now. Obama is worse.

We will never win another election with such a vote-manufacturing machine in place.

That is the reality.

Any article not dealing with this fact is not dealing with any means to win another election for real Americans.

Yes, overwhelming numbers want popular vote only, even in Lindsey Graham’s little state because that’s all they understand. The electoral vote is foreign to most Americans who couldn’t explain it in the least. The American people are civic-challenged.

Of course it was voter fraud.

Surely no one believes America voted to reelect the Marxist/Muslim usurper- the worst president in American history?

Can't you just imagine the above was the scene with Obama and his Commie staff after stealing the election through voter fraud- while Conservatives blame Romney, argue, point fingers, blather on about who to run in four years, 'starting a new party', and try to figure out how to suck up to minorities the 'next time'?

Next time? What makes them think the massive voter fraud in this last farce of an election won't be repeated? If we don't clean up our voting system, there may not be a next time. We may not see another Republican president in our lifetime

Map from Barack Obama Voter Fraud 2012

What most refuse to acknowledge is that it was unlikely that ANYBODY could have beaten the voter fraud planned and perpetrated by the criminal Obama machine. They seem to prefer pointing fingers, blaming Romney and blathering on about who to run in 2016 and how to suck up to the minorities.

>Polls indicated that Romney was going to win the election.

>The economy is close to Great Depression era conditions, and unemployment is almost as high as when Obama entered office.

>Economic conditions became so dire after Obama took office it prompted the rise of an entire new movement, the Tea Party.

>Presidents rarely win reelection when the economy is in the tank.

>Mitt knew it too, when he was met by several thousand in that parking garage cheering him when he arrived unannounced at that airport, and he put his hand over his heart and said, 'This is how you know you've won'.

So how did Romney lose a race that numerous reputable polls and pundits predicted would be an easy win, based on historical patterns?

Massive voter fraud.

That and no other reason

Almost every major Conservative website has put out an article charging voter fraud- Breitbart, American Thinker, Atlas Shrugs, WND, The Blaze, Front Page Magazine, Fox News, The Daily Caller, Town Hall, Human Events, Canada Free Press...

We cannot wait for 2014 and 2016 to regroup and figure out new strategies. By then it will be too late. The Marxist/Muslim usurper will have completed his planned distruction of America. That's what people fail to understand.

We must act NOW.

Start with the election. If we let the Rats get away with this massive voter fraud, we're no better than a bananna republic.

We must keep digging and pounding him every day, in every way we can- phony birth certificate, Benghazi, Fast and Furious, his hidden life, records....

The state vote is used to determine the allocation of Electors in the Electoral College which actually elects the President and Vice President.

What one is likely to gain in a blue state would be offset by losses in red states. Within the last ten years states including California were discussing forming a compact to adopt a process whereby states would agree to direct their electors to vote for the candidate winning the popular vote.

Our current system at least gives smaller states a shot at having some influence on the presidential election.

The states can change the way they choose electors any way they want. It has nothing to do with the electoral college which is fine the way it is.

You can’t honestly be this dense. Now worry about your state and I’ll worry about mine.

Read the Constitution, plus the 12th Amendment.

The States are free to choose their electors how they like. They are not constrained to allocating all of their electors based on whoever gets the majority of the state’s vote in the presidential election election in November. Changing the method that a state selects electors does not change the “electoral college”. (For what it’s worth: my view is that the most critical aspects of “electoral college” is that states get electors total to their number of Representatives+Senators and that it is those electors’ vote, not popular vote, which determines who becomes president.)

Maine and Nebraska are well within the constraints of The Constitution in the way they choose electors.

Any State could conceivably appoint the richest person in the state, or the governor, or the school board presidents, or their Nobel Prize winners, to choose their electors.

PS: The Constitution does not contain the phrase “Electoral College”

Awarding electors by congressional district is the way that is most representative of the people in my opinion. It also negates the effect of fraud in places like Detroit where 2 electoral votes would be given whether they get 10 votes or 10 billion.

While most people don’t like the idea of allowing state legislatures to choose senators, it was the more representative means before the 17th amendment. Now urban centers choose senators by popular vote. Its why a conservative majority state like Michigan gets Levin and Stabenow again and again.

No sh!t. And I thought the census every ten years was merely a device to creat more government jobs. BTW You forgot senators of which each state has two. One problem which no one seems to want to address is that those states which have large numbers of illegal immigrants get more representatives than they should, i.e. states with lower illegal immigrant populations are partially disenfranchised.

The only thing I think would make sense would be for each candidate to get the electoral vote for the congressional districts they win. Then with the 2 at-large votes for each state, the winner of the state popular vote would get one of those, and the winner of the most congressional districts in that state would get one of those.

I would also support returning a bit of power to state legislatures stripped by the 17th amendment and accept a plan that would have both of those at large electoral votes be selected by the state legislature. Their Senate would decide one and their House would decide the other.

That makes it consequential which way the state historically leans in elections.

I am fully aware of the constitutional provisions for electing a president. If you had read my all of my posts, you would have read my reference to what some states were proposing to make the overall popular vote their guidance as to how to allocate their electors. BTW Hillary Clinton was pushing diminish the role of the electoral college(excuse for using language which most people will comprehend. I happen to believe the electoral college as presently constituted is an effective way of minimizing a tyranny of the majority.

Giving the state legislatures the power to recall senators who don't act in the best interests of the state would be a great start.
