State police are responding to a report of a shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School on Dickinson Drive, school officials said.
Police are reporting a number of injured parties. The nature of their injuries is not clear.

I am Canadian and I’m not liberal, nor do I want to be lumped in with socialists up here.
This event brought me to tears and anger. I’m angry because they create these gun free zones so that evil people can cruise around and do as they will.
I believe everyone should carry.

Absolutely. This is “community based mental health care.” In all fairness, it’s a product of both the right, which didn’t want to pay for mental hospitals, and the left, which, under the Langian psychological models promoted at Teachers’ College, said that only the mad were truly sane.
Ronald Reagan, unfortunately, was one of the leading lights of “deinstitutionalization” in California, and at one point famously suggested that the mentally ill could get jobs as playground monitors.
But this all started with the report of one Geraldo Rivera on Willowbrook, an institution on Staten Island, which in general actually had fairly good care. He focused on restraining cages that were used for people having violent episodes. This was actually a step ahead, because previously they had been put in isolation (the famous padded rooms), but they were now permitted to be in the day room but had to be separated from the rest of the residents because they were a danger to them. This was before anti-psychotic drugs were as well developed as they are now, incidentally.
So he whipped up hysteria about this, and it combined with Lang’s message that capitalism was driving people crazy, and presto...instant leftwing lunacy.
But it was reinforced by the right, so the blame is pretty evenly distributed.
The odd thing is that the mental hospitals, in most cases, remained where they were, fully staffed...and empty. This is because they were usually located in remote rural areas and were the only employment in the town. So nobody from either party ever shut them down entirely, and meanwhile, the mentally ill were rampaging through the country.
The cost of deinstitutionalization has been estimated to be enormous, not only in the lost lives and consequent lost wages and productivity of their victims, but in everything from emergency room costs and policing costs to street cleaning costs.
That’s what needs to be changed.

After four decades of devaluing life, the post-Roe chickens have come home to roost. I cringe at the thought that the candidate God had chosen to defeat Baraq Obama in 2012 had been aborted in 1970.
Guns aren’t magic. Even if somebody had been armed, this guy would still have killed a number of children and teachers, and probably would have killed the person who tried to shoot him. Unless you’re a professional, you’re not ready for this...and even many professionals (cops, soldiers) get blown away.
So while I have no objection to average citizens being armed, it’s not going to prevent things like this. It’s not even a deterrent because these people usually want to die anyway.
The crucial thing is to get these people out of circulation. Every single one of the mass killings, except for those committed by jihadis, has been carried out by a mentally ill young man, obviously somebody with early adult or late adolescent onset schizoprhenia. They had almost all been under “treatment” and everybody was afraid of them, so it wasn’t like this was a surprise to anybody, particularly their families (and they often start by killing mom and dad).
No offense intended. I know there’s a lot of Conservatives up your way and I wasn’t including them in what I said.

I agree with what you say, however there are people like me (10 years as a soldier with 3 tours), that if in the right place at the right time, can make a difference, at the least the possibility would exist.
You’re right though, I don’t have any answers for how to find these people preemptively.
OMG, does your friend live on army posts? Have army husband? I briefly had a friend who was so nuts like that I can’t tell you. Luckily she moved from our area so I could stop being friends easily. They had to go to the OK post, years ago, but don’t know if she moved since. She scared me; sometimes when she got frustrated at someone she’d say “maybe I should just take a knife and go cut up some people”. Never mind her other insanities.
Well..they need to revisit the whole thing. These people are roaming our streets killing people. Remember the nutter that tried to eat that poor man in Florida? They will lash out with whatever..even their teeth. Control the nuts..not the guns.

What about private institutions? Haven’t they existed, and wouldn’t republicans be OK with that?
Likewise orphanages. Didn’t they have private versions? Yet all were declared cruel and I guess hence we have this foster system where kids bounce around yet aren’t actually adopted. Wouldn’t it be easier to see many kids at once and decide if you want to adopt one?

The constant refrain here of “someone carrying would have stopped this” is quite silly. That’s just speculation, although I’m not against people carrying.
It’s about time we return to the idea of “institutions”.
Once these people are adults,the system protects them from being institutionalized at all. Even when they are a clear danger to themselves and others..about the most you can get them in for is 30 days. Then they are released on medication and declared ‘cured’. If they try to keep them, these liberal lawyers swoop in and sue the institutions and get the nutters released.
