Salinas, California is gangbanger central. What better place for an elementary school named after an early California thug.

What’s up is down.

The worst offenders are contemporary childrens lit writers. Anyone who doesn’t realize Harry Potter is a villian (and a forgettable one) is well advised to review the ancient texts first placed in writing by the Brothers Grimm, but whose lore goes back far and wide.

I know some school administrators that should be fired.

Vasquez rock.

You've seen it in any number of Sci-fi movies and truck/car commercials.

He is a hero, yet we are supposed to erase Columbus from history. Sadly it is not just the inbred in California, you see this crap all over America. If it is white European it is to be reviled while any thug of color is a saint!

Nothing like bringing more Mestizo-Racism into the classroom.

And politicians in this country want to give Illegal Alien Amnesty to people who celebrate crime and thuggery?

Shame ... I went to First thru Fourth grade at Buena Vista school on River Road in Salinas ... same teacher throughout ... Mrs Lindsey. I was born there at Park Hospital. My mom was a Salinas High Cowboy and met my Dad at Hartnell. Most of my family worked at Spreckels Sugar at one time or another. My grandma ran a small beauty salon in the back of her house in Spreckels.
My grandfather spent 40 years at the Spreckels plant in Spreckles as head carpenter. My how things have changed

Scores of visitors brought him flowers, wines, notions and other tokens of esteem to where he was in jail during his trial.

What have I done to deserve such generosity?

mmmmmmmmmmmm artichokes. You must be from Castroville. I love stopping at the giant artichoke for their deep fried hearts whenever I am in the area!

No big deal. Salinas is the worst hellhole in the entire state of California. It makes Compton look like Beverly Hills. Naming the local elementary school after a notorious killer is par for the course, and will just enhance the exisiting situation a bit more.

Naming places after outlaws is nothing new for CA, especially northern CA. There are places all over that are named for Joaquin Murrieta, there is a county which bears his name, a defunct power plant and a small town all named after him and just a short distance from here.

He was a vicious killer whose life story was glorified and accepted by many for more than a century, he was portrayed as a victim of gringo violence, unjustly accused etc, etc. Sound familiar? At any rate naming something after a murderous Mexican seems to be a popular pass time in CA. Nothing new.

The Alisal Union School District confirmed Monday it decided to rename a new school in the Monte Bella neighborhood after a famous bandit, who is seen as a hero by some Mexican-Americans.

Ole!!

The Salinas school is not the first school named for a famous criminal.

If Vasquez has schools named after him, can Al Capone Elementary/High School be far behind? After all, during the Depression Scarface organized soup kitchens and gave money to other charitable causes. I look forward to the statue of Al holding a tommygun outside the school named after him. (snicker)
