Suspicion: Bedouin Helped Hamas Pinpoint Negev Targets

Elements within the defense establishment suspect that Bedouin from the Negev relayed information to Hamas and Islamic Jihad in Gaza during Operation Pillar of Defense, according to Maariv.

It is believed that the Bedouin roamed about in forbidden military zones and gave the terrorists information about the exact location where their missiles and mortars struck, helping them to hit their targets more accurately.

In one case, reservists from the Paratrooper Reconnaissance Battalion identified a Bedouin pick-up truck atop a hill in the Lachish training base. The soldiers suspected that they were assisting the enemy in targeting the base and fired in the air. The Bedouins drove off.

The IDF Spokesman said, "In the course of the operation, there were many attempts by unauthorized elements to enter areas defined as closed military zones. They were detained and transferred to the Israel police and the security establishment."

Military sources have speculated that the assistance from the Bedouin is what made Hamas's strikes on military bases achieve a relatively high degree of accuracy. Two soldiers were killed in such strikes.

It was my sheep, I tell you! They stole the pickup truck, drove into the restricted area, and started calling in coordinates to Hamas! When I found out, I was furious. They were grounded for a month.

Eleutheria5~:”... the assistance from the Bedouin is what made Hamas’s strikes on military bases achieve a relatively high degree of accuracy “.

Anywhere else , the bedouin truck would be considered a “Forward Operating Post” , and would have been demolished by outgoing arms fire .

“In one case, reservists from the Paratrooper Reconnaissance Battalion identified a Bedouin pick-up truck...”

Here I thought the Bedouins were kind of like the Amish, still tooling around on their traditional camels, like in “Laurence of Arabia”. Apparently, they’re more like rednecks of the desert now.

Rednecks don’t traffic in drugs or arms, or slaves. They’re more like the Fuk Ching and Latin King gangsters of the dessert.

Lawrence of Arabia was a crock, anyway. The entire “rebellion” was a ploy by the British to cheat France out of Syria. It was only partially successful on that score. But anyway, they did not make a glorious march across the dessert to take Aqaba, or Damascus, or anywhere. The British just tried to make it look that way so they could withhold territory from France’s agreed-upon sphere. Lawrence was not a gibbering lunatic in the end, either, just a junior partner in the Cairo-Khartoum cabal, the consequences of whose folly continue to twist the Middle East to this day. But that’s a long story.

Maybe I’ve been away from home too long.

The bedouins I knew were OK people.

Some Arabs that I know are ok people, too. Bedouins have a greater ability to be ok, though. They aren’t as emotionally disturbed as other Arabs. But I think they’re too crowded together in Israel, and that’s at the root of it all. Kindest thing to do would be to help them get back to the wide open spaces, such as in Northwest Africa, where they can just herd sheep and gang-rape the occasional lost tourists, as Allah meant it to be;-). Get them the hell away from Ghaza, anyway.

Re: The bedouins I knew were OK people.

The Bedouins in Iraq helped point out the locations of Saddam’s mass graves south of Baghdad. They liked the sound of gunfire so when we flew over a Bedouin camp we would fire our door guns. And yes, they still ride camels

You must also have read ‘The Secret Lives of Lawrence of Arabia’ - that book certainly changed my perspective.

Regular urbanized Arabs have a complicated relationship with Bedouins. They’ll keep sheep, goats, donkeys and camels, will boast of their alleged Bedouin roots, and emulate Bedouins the way Texans emulate cowboys. But I suspect that between the two groups, there is some genuine animosity. I’ve seen Arabs in the police force, but I don’t think they serve in the IDF. Bedouins will serve in the IDF and make no bones about it.
