Ryan, Rubio Seek Party Rebranding
WSJ ^ | 04 Dec 2012 | Neil King Jr.

Two of the Republican Party's most prominent voices, Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, laid out their visions for broadening the GOP's economic message in dual speeches Tuesday, as conservatives seek new moorings in the aftermath of Mitt Romney's presidential defeat last month.

The speeches revealed Mr. Ryan and Mr. Rubio—respectively, the party's most recent vice-presidential nominee and a freshman senator seen as a rising star—moving briskly to rebrand both themselves and their party at a time of debate and introspection over how to steer the GOP in a new direction.

The men, both seen as potential 2016 presidential hopefuls, used a packed awards dinner hosted by the Jack Kemp Foundation to lay out their views on the role of government in strengthening the middle class and assisting the poor.

Mr. Ryan's speech was his first since his loss as part of the GOP presidential ticket a month ago. Some of their remarks came off as subtle jabs at Mr. Romney and his contention during the campaign that 47% of Americans were irredeemably reliant on government aid.

"Some say that…too manypeople want things from government," said Mr. Rubio, the son of Cuban immigrants. "But I am still convinced that the overwhelming majority of our people just want what my parents had: a chance."

Mr. Ryan noted that the late Mr. Kemp—his onetime mentor, a congressman and a predecessor as a GOP vice-presidential nominee—"hated the idea that any part of America could be written off."

Conservatives have criticized the Romney campaign for focusing so heavily on small-business owners and for not making a convincing case for how his ideas would benefit the poor and the working class.

And how would that be different from what we've got?

In a nutshell, it would mean another 2009-10 stretch that would last for about ten years instead of two. Any '10-type anger would be split into two parties, so the Dems would govern Congress with pluralities or outright majorities. That's exactly what happened in Canada. Thanks to the vote-splitting in the Right, enough Liberals got past the post first to make for majority governments. So, we had Liberal hegemony from 1993 to 2006.

Huh? I’d never vote for another Bush or another Clinton. Ever.

Some way we need to get rid of the Republican inner circle through a takeover and replace them with strong leaders who truely believe in U.S. Constitution as the founding fathers intended, to preserve this nation’s belief in G-D, Freedom and Liberty. This is a must for this nation to continue or we are doomed and will be just like Russia and that won’t be pleasant unless you are a member of the political elite.
We need another Patrick Henry, for I don’t want slavery or bondage for myself or my son. I spent over 20 years in the military to defend this country and I believe it could very well be the time to consider a stronger rebellion and at great risk, it’s time to refresh our tree of liberty before tyranny takes hold because we remain silent. As Benjamin Franklin stated “Rebellion against tyrants is obedience to God.”

But what Ryan did say is that we need a “stronger safety net”. Yikes!

My plan for a third party would be as follows:

2014: establish tea party organizations throughout the country at state level. In states such as NY and CT, where they can cross-endorse candidates on the ballot, establish such so tea party-endorsed Republicans can be listed there. In all ststes, have nominating conventions before the GOP primary, so there can be a unified backing of tea party GOP candidates at all levels of office.

2016: also have a national nominating convention before the GOP primaries, so a single tea party candidate for president can be backed nationwide.

2018 and 2020: if all those tea party nominations weren’t enough to get a conservative president and reform the GOP in 2016, move to put the tea party on the ballot in 50 states, and by 2020, look to elect a tea party president.

But doesn’t Canada have its first truly conservative government in many decades, now that the Alliance and Conservative parties have been combined?

In some ways. Except for a raise of the age of consent from fourteen to sixteen, socons have been left out in the cold.

No, it won't be pleasant at all. At some point, when the decay is no longer sufferable, the cost of being shut out through vote-splitting will be worth it. I posted that mini-history because there are some optimists who think the slog will be easy as proverbial pie. It won't be. But as I said, at some point the hard slog will be worth it.

Well...if the cards all fall your way, you'll wind up with a "Velvet Revolution" with little or no bloodshed. Just a government that no-one obeys anymore, and whose employees don't have the heart to crack down.

But if the cards don't fall your way, you'll have another Civil War.

Regarding the latter, it's obvious that the side who wins a future Civil War will have the enormous benefit of the Reconstruction going their way. With this in mind, it may be smart to wait until the Left tries their hands at rebelling. Austerity might be enough to get them sufficiently hot-headed to try something like that.

Then, FedGov will be on your side. By the time any left-wing insurrection is crushed, FedGov certainly will be on your side - just as it was on the side of the abolitionists after the South surrendered. If this scenario plays out, just imagine two Constitutional Amendments that would be passed in the aftermath of a put-down left-wing insurrection. To make sure it doesn't ever darken the plains of America again.

[Why do I think the Left will lose? Because: a) they're prone to hot-headedness period; b) they're habituated to getting their way, which means they'll underestimate their enemy if shooting starts. The last is fatal in war.]

Since I'm on a foreign-advisor jag anyway, I have this suggestion: wait for the Left to try something like that, which they well may if austerity comes in.

And then, dance of the grave of their "lost cause" :)

They think it’s a product like a floor cleaner and not a Political Party.

What's the difference, when you have an electorate composed of WalMartians.

OK, how are you going to make sure that all of those who want to vote for your candidates are pure enough? Who is welcome? Won’t you be right back to where the Republican party is today?

Start looking at it as the Republican party is your friend. It provides you with the framework you need to get you where you want to go. The sad truth is you still have to have enough people to outnumber Democrats and it can't be done without using existing members of the Republican party.

Primaries are where you need to look for the opportunities to move the party where you want it to go. There is no other way. You need the exact same people no matter the name of the party.

I voted for Rick Perry in the caucus and Romney in the general, so what is your point?

It is impossible to create another party that will take you to your goal--too many flawed human beings involved.

I heard really depressing news this am., that Obama's approval is now back to nearly his highest point ever.

Our problem is the American people and if the American people by a huge proportion believe their lives are going to be better by raising taxes on the rich, what do you do?

We already have around 40 so-called “third parties”, none of them have gone anywhere so why will another one. Anyone who believes yet another one is going to solve any problems has to also believe in Santa Claus.

They can be less than pure and still be a lot better than what the GOP is delivering! Sure, they may ultimately be corrupted like the GOP, but that’d take a while. Meanwhile, how’s that status quo working out for you?

This is a numbers game--you have to have the numbers to defeat a Democrat and frankly, with the way you want to do it, you have to have the numbers to defeat both the Republicans AND the Democrats. It can't be done so the reality is that we all need to try to strengthen the Republican party because there is no other way.

Our problem is the American people. I don't know how you can expect miracles when well over 50% of the American people believe that Obama is on the right track with the economy.

There’s seldom one way for anything. My proposal gives the tea party four years, by getting them to settle on endorsements before the GOP primaries, to knock the GOP into shape. If that doesn’t work, the GOP is lost.

Meanwhile, all you need to know about our great GOP hopes of Rubio and Ryan is that David Brooks is gushing about them today.

Here he is describing Rubio’s decidely un-Republican proposals:

“Some were less conventional, at least as the Republican Party has recently defined itself: creating more community health centers, investing in more teacher training, embracing Pell grants.”

My goal does not require a third party. My goal is to defeat the cowardly back stabbing republicans altogether thus depriving the democrats of their foil, depriving the democrats of the peopel that give them every thing they want then carry the blame for it.

Since the republicans will not make them own it, I will by removing them.

As far as what to do, watch it implode.

The country I knew and love no longer exists, except as a memory. This new place is Hell, and I have no love for it.
