Police are investigating an incident at a Berks County hunting club in which someone on the hunting grounds allegedly targeted a mechanical flying object rather than a living and breathing one.

SHARK began to use an “Octocopter,” a remote controlled flying machine with a high tech video camera, to secretly record the pigeon shoots as they happen.

Well... wasn't so secret was it. LOL!

A Quigley 45-70 might be a tad over gunned, but better to make a one shot kill than just crippling the “bird”.

“Dead Coyote”, from Hevi-Shot, would be an appropriate choice. Bet I could bring it down.

Under the Common Law, unmodified by statute, a landowner owns the airspace above his land and could sue for trespass. The owner of the land should sue PETA seeking an injunction forbidding overflights. In addition, in trespass actions the law assumes at least minimal damages.

For me personally there is a question with regard to using self help in shooting down a trespassing model airplane.

Also of interest there are possible privacy violations as some on this thread have stated.

“Which reminds me of another story of someone shot a woman (thankfully no injury) because her hairdo was showing over the fence and the shooter thought it furry or something.”

That’s as funny as the Dutch TV commercial for bikini hair removal cream where the package delivery man rings the door bell a few times waiting for someone to open the door. They show a young good looking woman running to the door from the shower with a towel wrapped around her. They show her standing on her tip toes to look out through the peep hole in the door as the delivery man lifts the letter slot in the door, looks through and says “Hey curly, is your mother home?”

Unfortunately you don’t know what you are talking about. Most pheasants hunted in the “wild” are stocked by fish & wildlife agencies. Just like stocking bass or trout in a fishing lake. There are very few wild pheasants and many thousands are released in wildlife management areas each year.

Next, the dogs you talk about as if they were German Shepherd guard dogs unleashed on a chained up bird, are highly skilled and specialized bird dogs such as Brittany Spaniels which detect birds HIDING in brush and come to point so the hunters can flush the birds and take their shots.

Many many of the birds get away, it takes hours for the dogs to locate the pheasants, or chukars, quail (which are like little jet planes), etc.

As for shooting “low flying” birds, you can’t because you need enough elevation so you don’t risk shooting the hunting dog. I’ve gone out in a farm field stocked with 20 quail, and they flew so low and fast that even with a hunting dog and two hunters, I believe one was taken.

It’s a great sport, just watching the dog work the field is beautiful, and hunting on private land is much safer than shooting on public land.

My Quigley reference was to the Tom Selleck character, and his SHARPS riflery! In the film, he made some fab shots!!! You can watch it on Netflix if you missed it (click the pic)!

“Animal rights” drones. Is there anyone in this country capable of minding their own business?

I LOVE to deal with busy-bodies.

Once I was visiting a relative in Philly with my baby and we went to an open air market on a bright, sunny day. Baby in the stroller and we walked from booth to booth. Two, old bags walked up to me and said..”You need to get that baby out of the sun because it will burn” (I had the pram hood up and baby was fine, btw). I looked them up and down and said....”I didn’t walk over to you just to tell you that you could stand dropping about 50 pounds, did I? You know....for your ‘heart health’.” They gasped and walked away nattering to each other. LOL!

Au contraire. You own your property, but the airspace above it is probably open to the public.

Au contraire. Your "bundle of rights" extends upward to infinity, within the borders of anyone else's property.

There are certain rights of trespass granted to certain general aviation, commercial or military aircraft.

This is an airborne harassment platform and deserves to be shot down with impunity.

I know exactly what I am talking about. I saw the entire operation firsthand - knew the owner as well. Have YOU witnessed the internal operations of such?

Birds released into the wild by Fish and Wildlife have time to develop full normal flight muscles and instincts. A bird kept cooped up in an enclosure does not.

A single shot from a .22 can take one down.

You just have to be very, very good shooter, or just lucky.

PLEASE NOTE: No live animals were hurt, abused or killed in this incident.

Yeah, why aren't the animal-rights people thanking the skeet shooters, instead of complaining about them?

OH BLAST, that was up yonder in Yankee country.

Down hyar in Tejas, that little paper airplane woulda had hunnerds of holes in it. When it landed in the trees.

And the local rednecks woulda had to gear up and go looking for the owners. But we are weird like that down around these parts.

I don’t even own any camo. And all my firearms got melted when that dang assteroid hit my ex-wife’s trailer.

Dammitalltohell ;)

“Au contraire. Your “bundle of rights” extends upward to infinity, within the borders of anyone else’s property.”

Maybe in theory, but the police are already using drones for surveillance and the courts and congress have done nothing to stop them yet. Maybe they’ll get around to it in a few years, we’ll see.

If the top of your "do" is shot off over a fence, you might be a redneck.

they were trespassing and also in PA probably violating privacy/recording laws, see no problem shooting it down. can’t tell who the hell is flying it, so take it down.

My bad.

I referred to "The Quigley Rifle" as a 45-70.

In the movie it was a Shiloh Sharps 1874 Long Range rifle with a 34" barrel (4"s longer than a standard 30" barrel) converted to fire a .45-110 metallic cartridge with a 540 grain paper-patch bullet. It had double set triggers, and was fitted with a ladder-elevated Vernier peep sight and a Globe front sight.

I have seen the movie 3 or 4 times. It keeps getting better every time I watch it.
