Thanks, Jim! Last night I was having troubles but it was my connection to the internet in general. It was a breezy night. In my town if you sneeze the power goes out. I’m surprised I have connection right now with the winds from the oncoming hurricane.

Thanks JR. Several FR subgroups are also set up especially on FB. They work but nothing beats the real thing!
Dittos on the tips to speed page loading. I never thought about it speeding things up but recently I have not been using the sidebar much.
Also I never load the text option, only the headlines.
As soon asI get back to my desktop pc I’ll make the changes.

My Yahoo name is different too. However, if you want FReepers to know who you are, why don’t you just put that in parentheses after your post. It might be easier than changing your name.

I ran / posted tracerts on two of the debate threads, with similar results confirmed by info posted by others, and the nodes at ntt.net (mainly) and verio.net (lesser extent) have consistently been a huge drag on transit times.
. . not to mention the frequent time-outs on the Chicongo hubs

Which leads you to believe that this is a service provider issue rather than a server issue, correct?
A partner and I once had a server collocated at a shoddy service provider. We couldn't figure out why all of our sites and services were constantly going down and dragging. We were driving 30 minutes to the collocation site almost once a week to restart.
Eventually we changed our collocation site along with service provider. It was a real pain because we had to reroute all of our DNS traffic to a new IP range. But once we did that, the server practically ran 24/7.
We were small-scale by comparison, but once we got rid of the old service provider we felt completely relieved and the stress was dramatically reduced.

Not planning on going down, but were already running slow and were still a week out from the elections. While the tip about the other sites is very much appreciated, nothing beats the Real McCoy. I must be in the minority since I can't even recall (if ever) the last occasion when Free Republic has 404'd or 503'd. The clean layout and John's code makes FR the must-read, go-to address on the web for fast-breaking, accurate news and informed Conservative opinion. Free Republic has been dependable and, like a privately-owned water, utility, it's consistently always on when I need it. For what it's worth, I use Firefox 16.0.2 (compiled from source) on a homegrown Linux platform where I run my own nameserver.
I did hope over to freerepublic2 to take a peek. There are a lot of puffed-up, self-proclaimed "experts" and would-be consultants. No thanks! You and John are doing a tremendous job against all odds and I think any outsider would merely muck up a good thing. After all, this is the site that brought down Dan Rather and will eject Obama from office. Neither yahoo nor facebook have that kind of influence.

Strange that Day after day there are hours that go by when I can’t get on FR. And I know from reading that I am not the only one. And yet it is obvious that some people are able to get on when we can not. Then suddenly-—Poof-— And it come back for awhile. Sometimes erratically with delays, And sometimes it will be almost normal.

Hey Jim, I made the settings changes that you recommended earlier and it sped up page loading tremendously. I don't notice a difference in trying to post though. Mainly I've just not made any comments unless I just couldn't help myself.
Anyway, you might think about putting that other thread on Breaking News as well as this one. If enough Freepers make the changes the posting speeds might increase as well.
Just my 2 cents...

John, not trying to be facetious in the least, but is there any chance things in here could go whack when, like right now,
the FR system clock appears to be running almost two minutes ahead of time.windows.com (which, I would imagine, is mirroring one of the .gov atomic gizmos) ?

... I use Firefox 16.0.2 (compiled from source) on a homegrown Linux platform where I run my own nameserver. In my experience websurfing, with Windows, Mac OSX, Linux, and Unix machines, and all manner of browsers, the single most important performance improvement you can make is FAST NAME SERVICE.
You've got the best -- your own nameserver. I've done at at times in the past, myself.
Away from home or if you don't have your own local nameserver, I recommend Google's Public DNS nameservers (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4). They're available from anywhere with response limited only by your internet connection.
Yes, that means Google can see where you're going, if they want to keep stats. I don't care, I don't surf pr0n.
I very rarely find FreeRepublic response time to be too long to put up with. Most times, the clean spare design is way ahead of the fancier formatted sites.

I don’t think this is enough. When the jack-booted crackdown comes it’s going to be the entire internet. We need an agreed-upon short-wave frequency, as well as a universal call-sign that we can all recognize.
