Agreed. This monster should not be underestimated. We're always prepared (as we can be) and used the time today to double-check the pumps, move items indoors, and top off the fuel supplies. A water purification system was one of our most recent preparations and it will likely be needed during this aftermath. I hope that everyone in the areas likely to be hit are paying attention to your posts and understand that the impacts could well be monumental.

I heard that jackass mayor in NYC gave a presser at 6PM that downplayed everything to the max. All of the weather guys that I follow were shocked and stunned at what he said. They couldn't understand what “science” his thoughts could possibly be based upon.

Stay safe dirtboy, let's all pray for the best, but be prepared for the worst.

Which is better, having windows open or closed when Sandy hits?

My concern is not water. A flood may occur of this I’m sure. My concern is wind.

I have a garage which has broken windows on three sides of the structure. Should I board up the windows with plywood or should I just let the wind flow through?

The wind is not likely to be all that extreme. Nothing like a tornado or high category hurricane. Close your house windows and try to keep dry. If it were me I’d board up the garage windows to keep most of the water out.

This will be a category one weak hurricane or downgraded to a tropical storm by the time it reaches you. Windows open or closed, sounds to me as if the old advice about tornadoes has stuck with you in memory. That advice has been discredited. Close the windows. Cover broken windows to prevent interior water damage from heavy rains getting blown inside.

The boarding and taping you've seen in news reports of hurricane preparation are not likely to be anything you need to do. Boarding is beneficial in dealing with large wind-borne debris. Taping prevents high wind from flexing and cracking larger panes of glass by giving it a little more support, and it also minimizes flying glass if it actually does break.

Get any items that the wind could conceivably pick up and toss around put away. Lawn chairs, tables, decorative items, kid's toys, that sort of thing. If you've got any large trees near your house that could fall on it, occupy a section of the house that is away from it.

Drains, gutters and the like, clear them, there will be a lot of rain. A lot. Windblown rain can get driven into unusual places, such as through gable vents in the attic. Might want to check it out and cover them temporarily with plastic sheeting affixed with duct tape.

If you have an older roof, there may still be time to check that. Loose shingles will very likely be blown off.

It'll be a little scary for a while, then calm, then the wind will reverse direction and you'll go through it again. Then it's over except for flooding and any damage that might have occurred. You should be OK unless your house is in a flood plain. I'd go somewhere else for the duration if it is.

Thank you for your advice.

Irene was a Tropical storm and caused so much damage. I expect Sandy to be the same. They’re predicting the wind gusts will be up to 60mph. I’m just scared the garage will “fly” away. Maybe my mind is working overtime. The roof is slate, maybe that will keep it weighed down. LOL

The garage is in a flood zone that’s why I’m not concerned about water getting inside, it will whether the windows are open or closed. I did clean up the property today and sealed the house.

I’ll see about having the garage windows boarded up.

Pressure is down to 951 mb as of the 8AM advisory. Looks like the models might not be overstating the possible 930-940 pressure at landfall. Forecast track now takes it right into the middle of the Jersey Shore, worst-case scenario for surge flooding in NYC.

Ditto, we are right in the path in central PA, where mostly the weather is as congenial as in Camelot.

Anyone think this thing could just blow out to sea and stay there? I have a daughter in Baltimore; this thing has her scared and me too.

If the storm goes in north of her she will be fine. Right now it is forecast to go north of her.

You can't make that kind of assumption with this storm. Right now the strongest winds are on the southwest side. And the field of tropical-storm force winds extends out 520 miles.

I don't see massive structural damage from this event, except when trees fall on buildings. The real problem inland for this storm will be power outages that could last a couple of weeks or longer. Also, there could be stream flooding.

EVERYONE in the area needs to make sure they have enough potable water for a couple of weeks.

I appreciate that, but I'm still gonna pray that it stays out to sea! I imagine there are many more "daughters" out there that fathers are also concerned about. I don't want any of them to feel the fear I feel now.

Maybe someone should start a prayer chain on FR, petitioning God Almighty to hear our prayers and keep it out to sea.

I am no expert but just on the face of it, I wouldn’t recommend opening windows through a tropical storm.

Make sure your battery-powered radios work. Ours did, but we didn’t have any to lend to our neighbors.

Kind of prophetic.

And the foolish said to the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out. But the wise said, No, lest there be not enough for us and you: but go rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves. And while they went to buy...they that were ready went in [to safety]...and the door was shut. Matthew 25:8-9.

Mmmmmm...nope

While fear is a good thing in moderation, your daughter should nearing completion of preparations, expecting power outages.

Battery powered light source with plenty of batteries, a battery operated radio, non-perishable food (with manual can opener) and water for at least three days. That is the bare minimum.

There are flood watches in the Pittsburgh area. Because the news has not yet indicated the S word (snow), the grocery stores have not yet been overrun by shoppers buying a month’s supply of milk, bread and toilet tissue.

It’s been raining for about 24 hours now, just a mist type of rain and there are many locations in this area prone to flooding.

I hope everyone takes the necessary precautions.

Your post brought to mind these words from “God Bless Our Native Land”:

God bless our native land—
Firm may she ever stand
Through storm and night;
When the wild tempest rave,
Ruler of wind and wave,
Do Thou our country save
By Thy great might.

Definitely board up your broken windows. Do not open windows during a storm.
