As Obama, Romney Hold First Debate, Behind the Secret GOP-Dem Effort to Shut Out Third Parties
Democracy Now ^ | October 3, 2012 | George Farah

The debates have been a contrived farce, ever since the League of Women Voters were replaced by the CPD.

Democracy Now looks at how the Democrats and Republicans manage to shut out all third parties from the presidential debates.

The Obama and Romney campaigns have secretly negotiated a detailed contract that dictates many of the terms of the 2012 presidential debates. This includes who gets to participate, as well as the topics raised during the debates.

Just because you want to run for President does not mean you have a right to be on the stage.

If you want your candidate on the stage, get enough people to support them.

Third parties ARE included (i.e. Ross Perot in 1992 and 1996) when they can show themselves to be anything but a fringe irrelevance

The GOP elites have to know that if Romney loses, there will likely be a revolt of conservatives to a third party. No doubt they are doing backroom deals with the Democrats to institutionalize the current two party monopoly in order to make it difficult to impossible for a new conservative party to rise.

The single member district system doesn't allow third parties so screw 'em!

They have nothing to add and simply use up valuable time where Obama could show everybody how ignorant he really is, or Romny's suspenders might fail.

Now, back to the business of decapitating the Republican party and replacing it with a Conservative head!

this is nothing but articles for troll fodder.

You never see this BS over with the DUmies. This is just to steal votes away via dead enders.

The left should be voting third party to teach Obama a lesson.

If Conservatives cannot put together enough people to take over the GOP, they are never going to do the much harder work of organizing a viable third party.

This “3rd party” siren song is merely the rationalization “conservatives” use to justify sitting on their butts bitching at the GOP every election year instead of getting into the fight.

We don't need to go to a new party. As I've explained numerous times we have more than 50 different Republican parties. The problem is with the national coordinating body called the Republican National Committee.

We need only set up a replacement device called the NEW Republican National Committee and invite the state parties to send delegates for an organizational meeting.

We can cut off the GOP-e by name! And, if there's a state with a particularly troublesome Republican party, simply deny them representation until there's a replacement.

There are around 3 dozen third party presidential candidates. What line should be drawn to let all of them in? If they can meet the qualifications (being on a certain number of State ballots, getting at least 15% in national polls, etc) then they can be in the debate. If they don’t meet those basic qualifications, it is their own fault and they have bigger issues to deal with than a debate.

And isn’t Amy Goodman bestest buds with Medea Benjamin of Code Pink?

This is from a far-left fringe source. Likely they are pushing for the Communist-Vegan party or something.

I don’t believe it. The GOP may want to limit the impact of third parties, but it is to the Dem advantage to support them. Here in VA, the Dems strongly supported the inclusion of Virgil Goode (Constitution Party) on the ticket. Right now, the Libertarians and the Constitution partiers will take away Rep voters, which helps Obama.

One of Reagan's greatest moves was to insist on including 3rd Party Candidate John Anderson in the first debate. Carter boycotted and was represented in the debate by an empty chair.

Having displayed that sense of fair play, Reagan went on to clean Carter's clock in the remaining two debates.

Of course, John Anderson was actually able to convince 1 in 20 voters that he was a viable choice. It is a pretty modest standard and a case could be made to include someone polling the support of 1 in 25, 1 in 30 or even 1 in 50. But, so far as I can tell, none of these guys are polling even 1 in 100.

The state committee members are chosen by the state parties.

Let's say Texas is not happy with the current RNC performance, nor the way the guidelines for conducting primaries are issued ~ and they want something different.

Texas would do what they usually do but send delegates/committeemen to the NEW body and cut off the OLD body.

You get enough state party organizations doing that you can disestablish the current RNC and end up with what is for all intents and purposes a new national party operated by Conservatives.

Without state party support the GOP-e left in orbit about the old RNC would be little more than a small third-party without boots on the ground. Might be bigger than the Libertarians, but probably not.

Yes Democracy Now is a far left website. What they are pushing is for more third parties to diminish the Romney vote. It is a pretty transparent strategy on what they want to do, i.e., hurt Romney and help Obama who has nothing to fear from any third party on the Left.

some people do not live in reality. the race is between romney and the obamanation.

we don’t need another 15 candidates sharing the stage that do not have any more of a chance than an icecube in hell. hate to see rosie o’donnel given a voice in a debate.

there comes a time when logic has to rule. the rat’s are not very good at that, along with those that want to debate without a prayer of a chance.

that is reality. we have to work with what is available and make the best of it, and then work on change behind the scenes.

blessings, bobo

If that is saying they ignore the kook fringe and other irrelevant candidates with no chance of winning a single electoral vote or more than a fraction of a percent of the popular vote, it is probably true.

Sorry kabar, Republican voters aren't there to be taken away ~ rather, they are there to be driven off to the nether regions of the Old Dominion ~ and then you don't get them to vote for your latest GOP-e clownshow.

Think about that next time you screw around.

Party loyalty is a two way street and slavery has been against the law here since Abe Lincoln's time anyway.
