What the article doesn't say is although nearly 5 million have fled the state the net population has grown, and a very large chunk of that are vassals of the state.

Tax base shrunk + spending obligations increased = anarchy around the corner.

Campbell’s Soup just announced they are closing down their Sacramento plant in a few months. 700 jobs gone to someplace, probably Mexico.

“if all these trends continue, California may find itself in a situation similar to that of New York and the states of the midwestern Rust Belt in the last century, which have seen populations stagnate for decades, or even fall.”

Nope. Southern Cali will become North Mexico.

Then there will probably be some shooting.

I fled California in 1979, when I was in my late 20s. I will NEVER go back there to live, and will ONLY go there in the future for family events (yes, I still have some family there, but likely not for long).

The problem with these California expats is once they infest your state, they try to change it to the same craphole they escaped from.

Count me as one - in Texas now. Getting rid of CA income tax and disability tax was like a HUGE raise - not to mention not having to deal with the their huge car registration (and insurance) costs. Plus, Texas is a great place to raise kids, relative to California or the Northeast.

Sure, some things are more expensive - like our property tax rate - but even that can be controlled, as you can choose to live in a cheap place, even if you make big bucks.

Yes, our sales tax rate is high - but for big purchases, we can deduct. It winds up that the real sales tax rate on a car is about 5% in Texas (about half of California).

Having said all of that, I still love California. It’s a gorgeous state and I still have many friends there. Not to mention Tommy’s and In-and-Out. My last vacation was to California. But as for a place to make a living and raise a family, California priced itself out decades ago.

We moved to Arizona in 2009 with my husband's company. They had been in SoCal for 50+ years. I miss the fun extracurricular activities, bot the crime, taxes, traffic, phony people (not ALL Californians are phony but a good percentage are), etc. Miss my good friends from there though! I don't think Arizona minds we are here. We are CONSERVATIVE!

All you can do is hope that the people who fled Democrat California aren’t the same scumbags who voted in the Democrats who fouled their nest in the first place.

CA has already passed the point of no return in it’s race to 3rd world status. Taxpayers leaving is just a sign of this. Expect this to accelerate.

California is now, in fact, primarily a third world country.

I was born, bred here in Orange County, CA..I’ve never left! Mine & hubby’s family here too so it would be so hard to leave but we think about it...thankfully OC is mostly conservative but the illegals are mass producing, Santa Ana now resembles Tijuana.
