It was a no-lose proposition for the Republicans. If it didn’t go over well, it was comic relief. If it went over well, big polling uptick.
Big upside, next to no downside.
For my part I found it painful, moreso because I know this is a tier 1 veteran actor/director, and expected a smoother delivery.

What was the proof before you got “even more proof”?
Most definitely, Maher is in it for himself, and he’s not entirely stupid. Evil, but not stupid.
He shilled for Obama because he saw how the majority was going.
He may be hedging his bets here a bit. I think he could grow accustomed to tweaking the Left for a while just as he tweaked the Right these past years. He wants controversy, because that helps his ratings. Pure Obama shilling is not controversial anymore.

I’ll admit I thought it was strange, but I also loved seeing him call out the Kenyan and telling him his time was up and he had to go.
Overall, I think the positives of the speech FAR outweighed its weird aspects.
