Vice President Joe Biden: ‘Detroit’s Getting Back Up’

DETROIT – Revving up a crowd at a Detroit high school, Vice President Joe Biden offered up one of his father’s old adages to illustrate the tenacity the people of Detroit possess as their city works to recover from the crisis in the auto industry.

“My dad used to say you measure a man or woman – it wasn’t whether they got knocked down, but how quickly they got up. And guess what? Detroit’s getting back up,” Biden told an estimated crowd of 1,100 packed into a narrow hallway at Renaissance High School Wednesday.

Detroit’s unemployment rate remains more than a point above the national average, sitting at 9.7 percent in June, but over the past three years, the unemployment rate in the city has decreased dramatically from its 27.8 percent rate in July 2009. Michigan’s unemployment rate rose last month, jumping from 8.6 percent in June to 9 percent in July.

Biden, who called Mitt Romney a “decent” man despite boos emanating from the crowd, knocked the presumptive GOP nominee for the 2008 New York Times op-ed he penned with the headline “Let Detroit Go Bankrupt,” saying that the president’s approach to dealing with the auto industry proved successful.

“In spite of Gov. Romney’s insistence that we let Detroit go bankrupt, we rescued the automobile industry,” Biden said.

The Romney campaign claimed Biden’s comments about Detroit’s turnaround are “out of touch.”

Let’s see Biden walk alone in downtown Detroit at night. Some of Holder’s people will show him how Detroit’s getting back up.

I always figured detroit was a likely ground zero for the zombie apocalypse.

But I never figured it was going to be the city itself that was turned into the walking dead.

An ABDNC estimate of 1100 means 3-400 union thugs.

Translation, it was Bush's fault......

I've go news for you, Detroit's unemployment rate is likely around the 50% mark.......

Just today there were two stories on the news about house fires. In both cases, the electricity had been turned off a long time ago and the individuals living in one of the houses were relying on a space heater and pirating the electricity from an outside source which is very common

I've been hearing stories about Detroit's comeback since the day I was born. I'm almost 35.

Downtown Detroit isn't that bad actually. Biden would be find walking there day or night.

Walking along Fenkell or Gratiot is another story.

He’d walk a while if he parked his car on the street. He’d come back to find the tires gone.

I used to pick my Goddaughter up from the Megabus down there. I wouldn’t leave my 10 year old car.

When I was in high school, our football practice field was on Fenkell (Five Mile Road) and St. Mary’s. It was a decent neighborhood a half-century ago. Right now, it’s like Stalingrad.

I was a GM guy most of my life. Never again.

I spoke with my "Auto Gnome" today...

The discussion items were:

* Scathing article juxtaposing GM's CEO vs. Alan Mulally at Ford and how GM has got it all wrong, but more importantly GM's "VEBA", i.e. the UAW retiree-medical insurance trust.

* You see the GM-UAW got Stock via the screwball bankruptcy (essentially a Warrant to exercise ) to eventually sell for cash to keep this retiree medical plan alive. The problem is the stock price has dropped to the point where they can't exercise it, they would loose money.

And Ford? They gave stock to their UAW and they exercised the options when Ford Stock went up, and the Liability is Gone, it is now the responsibility of Ford-UAW's, and it is off Ford's Books. I am not so sure you can say this about GM, it is hanging out their like a bad curve ball it is another Liability that hasn't been resolved...

This is just like the "Racer's Trust" i.e. the GM land trust with many properties they can't sell, and again another layer of this complex onion that hangs out their like another bad curve ball...

If you setup the cameras just right, it makes that 100 people look like 1,100 or more people.

Getting back up?

In the crime rankings?
Back ahead of Chicago or Killadelphia?

If the pictures on the local news were accurate, 1,100 would include everyone in a quarter mile radius of the event. I'm sure this schools pep rallies and/or gang fights are better attended.

Plus with the huge decreases in the housing market in SEMI, 90% of the productive folks have been able to flee Detroit for greener pastures in the burbs. I’m sure that has dramatically changed the unemployment numbers...

How would they record unemployment numbers of people who have never had a job?

That is what I mean. If you have started with 100 productive people and 100 leeches, then a 10% unemployment rate would only be measured against the productive. 10% UE would be 10 people of the 100 prodcutive. The 100 leeches have long ago left the work force and are no longer used to measure UE.

So, if you have half the productive leave for the suburbs and simultanously the unemployed leave for jobs, then you end up with a lower UE rate. If 8 of the 10 unemployed find jobs elsewhere and then 42 folks move to the subs anyway, then you are left with 2 unemployed of the 50 remaining productive persons. Your UE rate would have IMPROVED from 10% to 4%.

The dems claim that as a success!
