AURORA, Colo. – James Holmes, the accused gunman in last Friday's midnight movie massacre in Colorado, mailed a notebook "full of details about how he was going to kill people" to a University of Colorado psychiatrist before the attack, but the parcel sat unopened in a mailroom for as long as a week before its discovery Monday, a law enforcement source told FoxNews.com.

I find it very difficult to believe that this isn't just CYA for the shrink. How is it that he "though" he received a package out of the blue from James Holmes but it turned out it wasn't from him. But magically, a second package showed up that was from him.
I know this is idle speculation, but I could certainly see that the shrink got a package from Holmes, opened it, debated the ethics of turning it over to law enforcement and then decided not to. After the killings he had to cover his own tracks so he calls the police and says, "You know, this may be nothing, but I think I remember a package that might have been from the shooter, but I can't find it." He describes a different package. The police come help him look and finding the package he describes they realize it was not from Holmes. But they conveniently do find another package that was from Holmes.
Please tell me why he "thought" he received a package from Holmes. But it wasn't from him. But another that he supposedly had not seen was.
He knows more than this story tells.

That was one of my first suspicions when I read his work involved ‘nerves’.... How did he change from a brilliant student, earning large grants - into failing oral tests and dropping out of school? Something happened......

If that evidence was generated prior to the shooting based on witness reports would that help or hurt the gun banners (libs) case?
As an example which is not necessarily this case, would it make sense to sell someone guns who is being treated for schizophrenia? The common sense argument for that extreme case is 'no', to me at least(I know people that are). They certainly would be rejected for a government clearance.
Universities are your typical government incompetent and careless operation. It is disgusting.

99% of the snail mail I get; both at work and at home is junk mail. Just about the only snail mail other than junk mail that I get at work in the Payroll/HR department are orders for child support withholding and IRS and student loan garnishments and most recently a request from the DOL - Bureau of Labor Statistics to complete a survey on what “green” products we might be manufacturing and as much as I wanted to trash it, I filed the survey on-line so I didn’t have to waste company postage to mail the damned thing back. All the other “mail” is “inter-office” mail and increasingly even that comes via scanned images through email. I don’t have a personal mail box in the mail room BTW; the amount of mail we get is so little that we have one mail box for our entire department of six people.
That people can generate ever-sillier additions to the Grand Conspiracy Theory from the fact the package sat in a room for a week is beyond ridiculous.
Yep. All that’s been missing from the ever-sillier additions to the Grand Conspiracy Theory is the theory that he was abducted by aliens and “experimented” on while aboard the big invisible space ship hovering over Area 51. But then that poster isn’t here anymore. : )
I'm inclined to think he is effectively "ratting" out the person he sent it to.
Now...as to legalities....yes they got a warrant...blah, blah, blah...but anyone can take the 5th...so can it really be used against him without his permission.
Absolutely a lot of maybe’s....But the worst is if this could have been prevented by the timely delivery of the package. And the Prof certainly knew Holmes.
That’s nothing but conjecture at this point. The professor may have known him, directly or in just in passing but then again perhaps he didn’t – university campuses are huge places filled with lots of people and even someone taking advanced classes in the professor’s general area of study, may not have much if any direct contact with him. The real question here is whether Holmes ever saw this professor as a patient.
If Holmes, being a rather bright guy and someone studying neurobiology, someone with more than average or passing knowledge of psychiatric and psychotic disorders, recognized at some point that he was slipping away from reality, exhibiting signs of schizophrenia or a bi-polar disorder, sought out help but didn’t get the help he needed, that might be a different story and an even more tragic one at that.
I recall that Charles Whitman, the infamous Bell Tower shooter of the early ‘60’s, sought help from several psychiatrists, even telling at least one of them of his murderous intents. In that case Whitman’s brain tumor may have been the contributing factor if not the cause of his psychosis. It is sad for Whitman and his victims that he was not properly diagnosed and helped when he sought help. His glioblastoma was going to be eventually fatal to him, but if he’d been properly diagnosed and treated, a lot of innocent people have not needed to die.
OTHO, some schizophrenics (if Holmes is indeed one and I’m not sure or saying he is) are very good a hiding their disease, even hiding their hallucinations and acting fairly normal at least some if not most of the time. And here I’m thinking of John Forbes Nash. In Nash’s case, he was eventually diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic but he managed to function rather normally if not brilliantly before and in between forced hospitalizations and learned to reject and ignore his hallucinations even as he eventually refused medications. Of course among schizophrenics, people like Nash are the rare exception rather than the rule. Nash won a Nobel Prize for Economic Sciences but most schizophrenics don’t turn out so well. But while some schizophrenics are delusional, for some if not many, their delusions are mostly harmless; they believe they are Napoleon or Anastasia for instance. But for some schizophrenics, their delusions take a dangerous and dark turn. But classic schizophrenics can go in and out of reality – they can be very bright and functional one minute and be completely deranged the next but often they live in a world somewhere in between, being both smart and cunning and completely deranged.
Is Holmes a paranoid schizophrenic or just a very good actor? I don’t know. But from everything I’ve read about his life prior to his rather recent bizarre behaviors and seemingly recent disconnect from reality and suddenly failing grades for a formerly very good student and someone who while shy and withdrawn by some accounts, didn’t have any past that we know of that indicates criminal or violent behaviors, it seems very reasonable to me that he had at a minimum some sort of severe psychotic break.
This is just my opinion as someone who has dealt with schizophrenics up close and personal in a former job and who has a close relative with a bi-polar disorder.
My hubby (has background in mental health) saw the vid of him in court and thinks he’s a faker.
That could very well be but I tend to think that a qualified Psychiatrist would hesitate to make a diagnosis based solely on a video. A very good Psychiatrist can easily tell if someone is faking but that requires face to face session over the course of several hours or days.
To me he looked like he was drugged or suffering from sleep deprivation or perhaps both. But IMO, if he’s acting, he’s a very good actor. If I were going to “act” or fake crazy for the judge and the cameras, I’m not sure I’d think to be so subtle about it. If I were going to act “crazy” I’d jump up and yell and scream and “act” really crazy. But then again, perhaps he is indeed a very good actor. But for now, I’m going to withhold my very unqualified and amateur opinion on that until I hear what those more qualified to make that diagnosis have to say.
They said on tonights news that he was one of Holmes’ professors.
You have so many factual errors in your post, I don’t know where to begin. Perhaps you should actually fire a gun sometime, before you post nonsense like that.
Hey Dino... how about you actually read the entirety of the thread instead of responding to a post on the first damn page? I discussed this issue in much more detail and admitted some oversights on the drum mag issue in numerous posts.
I am an FFL, an NRA Certified Instructor, a gunsmith/metalworker, I restore antique firearms for auction, and I have over a dozen tactical training courses under my belt. Don’t be so quick to cast aspersions.
As I read through the thread, I saw that others had called you out on your errors later, so sorry for the duplication. The fact that you were an order of magnitude off on the weight led me to the assumption that you had never touched a cartridge before.
I was basing it off of my experience with a very heavily-constructed AK47 and no actual empirical evidence as to weight except for my experience lifting weights in the gym.
My point overall was that from a practical and tactical perspective, a drum mag isn’t useful for a single shooter. Drum mags are great for laying down covering fire, but picking off moving targets requires a little more agility than that weight would particularly allow.
