The gun madness continues
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | July 20, 2012 | Editorial

... A reasonable country would have taken steps to curb these tragedies years ago. Strong federal gun control laws wouldn't stop every murder in the United States, but they would surely make it far more difficult to have a world where a 24-year-old can easily purchase assault-style rifles and shotguns and walk into a dark, crowded theater. (And no, arming more people wouldn't have saved the victims in this massacre - imagine how many more deaths there would have been with multiple people shooting in a dark, crowded theater.) But such is the strength of the gun lobby in Washington that members of Congress won't discuss, much less pass, any gun control legislation.

Our elected officials refuse to stand up to a powerful and dogmatic lobby that fails to distinguish between weapons of war (such as the AR-15 assault weapons the suspect reportedly purchased legally) and guns designed for hunting or self defense.

Until our leaders find the courage to do what's right, the massacres will keep happening. And that is the most senseless tragedy of all.

And yes, armed citizens in that theater could have indeed stopped this lunatic. People saw him. People could have shot him. Other theaters place armed policemen around the entrances to protect citizens. Could those policemen stop a killer? This stuff is nonsense, and the people who are jumping on this to cut a chunk out of the 2nd Amendment are sick punks. If anything, this incident proves that people need to be able to defend themselves and their families, no one else can do it, especially politicians who see this as a way to further turn free men into serfs. If we cave to the calls for more gun control, we will be playing right into the hands of Holmes and the gun grabbing radicals who helped pollute his mind.

It sounds like somebody been hittin' da happy smoke.

Guns didn't do this. The NRA didn't do it. The Second Amendment didn't do it. John Holmes, the "prepetual student" from California did. Check with the Aurora P.D. They can confirm that.

Who are you?

How I express myself is my business. If you don’t like it, take it up with the owner.

Furthermore, your “O” isn’t very “H” when you assume (incorrectly) armed citizens aren’t “trained.”

Pray tell, what is your qualification to even render an opinion with regard to the use of arms?

It is “imagination” such as you have exhibited that allows liberals to have a “field day” with such tragedies. You have no more reason to assume an armed citizen would cause collateral damage, rather than save the day, than a liberal has for dismissing the “Laffer Curve.”

Citizens with no criminal record should be able, at will, to carry, concealed or open

Bull shit. Where does it say all that in the second amendment?

If you've done your time, all your Constitutional rights should be reinstated, no ifs ands or buts.

Wow, you really need to take chill pill.

I don’t know why you launched on me, but I guess its a personal thing.

Reread my whole post. Go back and look at the vid of the old coot shoot AT PEOPLE LAYING ON THE GROUND RUNNING AWAY.

I don’t know what you think, but the THREAT WAS NEUTRALIZED.

He’s lucky he wasn’t held over for attempted manslaughter.

And no, your calling another poster a JackA@@. Who the HELL are YOU to make such A JUDGMENT?

Drunken keyboarding can get you in a world of trouble. Just saying.

Have a good evening. Call me in the morning.

It is substantially easier for me to buy illegal drugs like pot, cocaine, meth or even heroin, than it is for me to buy "Cold Formula Advil" with pseudo-ephedrine.

And passing more laws to restrict the LEGAL sale of something will make the illegal use of them less likely?

Reports are that he had some sort of a gas grenade. What if he would have used incendiary devices instead?

You are exactly correct.

From his point of view, Looky here: I’m a nerd into medical stuff. Not only do I have a BS in neuroscience, I am working on a PHD. (this means that I’ve surpassed an MS)

Cooking up a batch of some sort of neurotoxin is just fun and frivolity in the lab.

The guy is smart. He may be damaged goods, but he is smart. Which makes him one of the most dangerous people on earth.

Let’s just hope that the smoke he unleashed was just that, smoke and teargas. If he was as diabolical as I think he might have been, many people could start dying from “unknown” causes a few months down the road.

I'm not "playing" any "liberal games". I'm just pointing out that liberal attacks on the 2nd amendment aren't based on some desire to solve the problems of violent behavior, since if that were truly the motivation then people such as Mayor Bloomberg would also be proposing solutions that infringed on, for example, the 1st amendment, or maybe the 4th amendment.

In other words, if their motivation was simply to prevent crimes like the one that just happened in Colorado they would be suggesting that the content of movies be limited to protect society. But we don't see the knee jerk suggestion to censor movies whenever some lunatic acts out in response to a movie.

My real point is that statist liberals always exploit any tragedy to attack the 2nd amendment, but curiously don't propose solutions that trample on the 1st amendment. I'm not suggesting that they should, just commenting on what they actually do.

First, I was calling the editorial writer a jackass, not the poster. Obviously, you're not too familiar with the ways and protocols of FReeping.

Who I am is someone who knows a little something about firearms, that doesn't trot out imagination and speculation, then illegitimately claim it an "opinion."

Opinion presumes you know something about that which you opine.

The reason I "launched" on you is because you not only presumed to choose my verbage for me, but also draw conclusions based on a superficial knowledge of the subject matter as if you actually knew what you were talking about.

For example, a retreating threat is not "neutralized"; an incapacitated threat is neutralized. Do they not have the concept of "turning around" where you come from?

Florida is not a "duty to retreat" state. As such, when involved in a deadly force encounter, the intelligent procedure is to continue firing until the threat is no longer able to fight, not until the threat retreats. Only a moron or a lawyer would advise ceasing fire on a clearly mobile threat you've already shot!

ConradofMontferrat said: "I don’t know what you think, but the THREAT WAS NEUTRALIZED."

Could you explain how you determined that?

Was either criminal unconscious?

Was either criminal permanently disarmed?

Was it possible to tell whether either criminal had additional weapons concealed on their persons?

If somebody I cared about was standing next to me I would not have assumed that the criminals were unable to renew their threat to commit murder. After all, that is what armed robbery is all about; give me your valuables or I will kill you.

He’s right. Heroin, cocaine and other drugs were made illegal and drug abuse completely ended in the US. It’s not like a 24 year old could just go up to a stranger on a street corner and buy any of these illegal items. Right?

Liberals should ban personal responsibility not guns.

What do they have against James Holmes? That he liked guns?

What hypocrites. They love killers and lobby against their being executed!

Go figure.
