Huge police and fire dept. presence, along w/ mobile command posts, explosives units, "rebreather" units, even a marine rescue unit. At least half a dozen ambulances sirening away from the vicinity.
Anyone know anything?

An exercise, perhaps? I've run across of couple of those in Manhattan in the last few years. If it's not in the news that seems to be the most likely explanation.

Hmm. Sounds like a BCF (Borough Conniption Fit). Maybe one of the Barnard brownstone beavers at Ozzies on 7th inadvertently said something nice about Giuliani and had to jump in the Gowanus Canal to cleanse her spirit.

http://fortgreene.patch.com/articles/travel-advisory-a-c-trains-bypassing-jay-st-due-to-suspicious-package-report
Update, 11:38 a.m.: Police gave the all-clear after a suspicious package left at Jay St.-MetroTech station was determined not to be a threat.
All trains are now stopping at the station, resuming normal service as of 11:15 a.m., according to NYPD.
Police said the suspicious package was a bag left at the station.
Update, 11:21 a.m.: Trains running along the R line are now also bypassing Jay St.-MetroTech station as the investigation into a suspicious package continues.
Service at a portion of Jay St.-Borough Hall subway station [Correction: the station is Jay St.-MetroTech] was halted Thursday as police and fire officials investigated a suspicious package, according to the New York Fire Department.
The FDNY said that several people called 911 at around 10:20 a.m. to report the presence of the suspicious package in the station near Jay and Willoughby streets.
Trains along the A, C and F lines are currently bypassing the station, according to the Metropolitan Transit Authority.

Thanks for the update!
Sigh of relief.
