The United States and Israel jointly developed a sophisticated computer virus nicknamed Flame that collected critical intelligence in preparation for cyber-sabotage attacks aimed at slowing Iran’s ability to develop a nuclear weapon, according to Western officials with knowledge of the effort.
The massive piece of malware was designed to secretly map Iran’s computer networks and monitor the computers of Iranian officials, sending back a steady stream of intelligence used to enable an ongoing cyberwarfare campaign, according to the officials.
The effort, involving the National Security Agency, the CIA and Israel’s military, has included the use of destructive software such as the so-called Stuxnet virus to cause malfunctions in Iran’s nuclear enrichment equipment.
The emerging details about Flame provide new clues about what is believed to be the first sustained campaign of cyber-sabotage against an adversary of the United States.
“This is about preparing the battlefield for another type of covert action,” said one former high-ranking U.S. intelligence official, who added that Flame and Stuxnet were elements of a broader assault that continues today. “Cyber collection against the Iranian program is way further down the road than this.”
Flame came to light last month after Iran detected a series of cyberattacks on its oil industry. The disruption was directed by Israel in a unilateral operation that apparently caught its U.S. partners off guard, according to several U.S. and Western officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity.

After the last series of leaks what do they do? They double down by releasing even more secrets. Unreal.
We need investigations. And now.
Computer tricks will only work for so long. What is needed is to convince the Iranian people that they want nothing whatsoever to do with nuclear anything. And the only way to do that is with an (arranged) nuclear accident, that causes significant injuries and death to Iranians.
It is the trading of hundreds, and maybe a few thousand Iranian lives to save a hundred thousand or more lives that would be lost in a conventional war.
It would require just two things: a large amount of explosives planted at a known nuclear facility upwind of a large city, and a very specialized truck, parked for a short time between the facility and the city.
It begins by parking the truck, with its driver sitting in the cab. He pushes a concealed button and panels open on the roof of the truck. Powerful but silent fans blow a large amount of invisible radioactive isotopes up and into the wind currents that will take them to the city.
After a length of time, he pushes the button again which turns off the fans and closes the panels, and he drives away, the truck to disappear forever.
Then the large bomb goes off at the nuclear facility.
Everyone assumes that the facility had an accident that blew the radioactive isotopes into the air.
Word gets out about the accident, but only days later people in the city start showing signs of harm. Sickness and weakness, large patches of skin burned with beta radiation. Very quickly radiation is then discovered and large parts of the city are contaminated. A panic results.
Soon people start dying, with many disfigured by scarring from the burns. It is grotesque, and about a month later many people’s immune systems crash and they get severe infections.
Of course, with government denials that it is to blame, which not even they will believe, things will get worse. The international community will offer aid that will be rejected; and it will also demand to know what was going on at that facility.
This sort of thing tends to snowball in a hurry, and the usual techniques of blaming other nations will fall flat. Iran’s allies will be deeply embarrassed as well.

Hayden and some private sector cyberwar experts are mentioned by name. This story may be an attempt to hang the leaks on innocent sources. Or maybe I’m paranoid.
This is the equivalent of FDR and Churchill bragging about how Enigma lets us know everything the Germans are doing, how we’ve rolled up all their agents in Britain and America, etc.

There has been speculation that Washington had a role in developing Flame, but the collaboration on the virus between the United States and Israel has not been previously confirmed.
