I use an entrenching tool and an empty plastic plant bucket, but then I’m primarily picking up from my own fenced back yard. And it’s typically at ambient temperature, not hot and steaming.
I read a suggestion that you place your car keys alongside your bedstand (if you have the kind with the remote unlock, etc.). Hear a noise? Click the remote to fire off the car alarm. Buys you a little more time and might scare off the more skittish types.

I used to install home alarms. I once had a single mom if the alarm was all she needed. I told the truth. I don’t do alarms anymore.
