Faced with deteriorating economic conditions and an unexpectedly aggressive Republican opponent, President Obama and his aides are expressing nostalgia for Sen. John McCain, the Republican opponent Obama defeated handily in the 2008 election.
At a rally in Minnesota Friday, Obama said Republicans today are in the grip of a "fever" that has caused them to oppose his initiatives virtually across the board. That "fever," Obama said, will make this presidential race against GOP nominee Mitt Romney particularly contentious -- in contrast to the last time, when Obama faced an opponent, McCain, who declined to engage in the kind of hard-hitting fight that many of his Republican supporters hoped he would.
"I mean, 2008 was a significant election, obviously," Obama told the audience at a Minneapolis restaurant called Bachelor Farmer. "But John McCain believed in climate change. John believed in campaign finance reform. He believed in immigration reform. I mean, there were some areas where you saw some overlap."
Later Friday, at a fundraiser in Chicago, Obama made much the same point about his 2008 opponent. "The last time we ran, we had a Republican candidate who -- I had some profound disagreements with him, but he acknowledged the need for immigration reform, and acknowledged the need for campaign finance reform, acknowledged the need for policies that would do something about climate change," Obama said. "Now, what weve got is not just a nominee but a Congress and a Republican Party that have a fundamentally different vision about where we need to go as a country."

Never had a tough campaign before, have you, champ?
This is going to be hell of the fight friend.
When pushed to the wall and with no exists, expect cat going wild.
Curious: Why do you go ‘salve’ all the time?
When you've got two "opposing" candidates both campaigning for the same person, it's hardly a surprise when that person wins.
He likes you...
Because of respect I have friend and we do that saying Halo, Hello.
It’s a formal greeting. A show of respect.
(live it up, how much respect do any of us get anymore?)
Many Freepers will be surprised that Romney does not act like a RINO and a wimp.
LMAOF, you just don’t do that to man , be nice :}}}}}
and that comment is very disturbing to me LOL
on serious note, please don’t do that again.
We should support him totally but keep a REAL conservative, like Sarah Palin,in the wings to primary his ass out in 2016.
Which explains why I'm predicting Mitt will pick Sarah as his Veep—so she can't challenge him in the primaries.
Allen West should be our back-up for 2016 just in case.
From Latin salve.
welcome!, greetings!, cheerio!
so long!, bye-bye!
Hence the fever.
Romney certainly wasn’t wimpy when it came to the other GOP candidates, let’s see if he can be just as nasty when it comes to the Kenyan.
Just ask Newt! Romney, for his calm, cool, almost too straight demeanor, is one tough fighter. He plays to win. Obama, Axelrod, Pflouffe, et al. have no clue how to react.
Team Obama had based this campaign on attacking Bain, (i.e., diverting attention from Obama’s record of failure). Now it’s the Dems who have supported what Bain has accomplished. And they don’t seem to have a Plan B.
If that happens I will be flabberghasted.
He’s never had to campaign or work for anything. It has all been handed to him, affirmative action etc., unsealed records on opponents and that kind of stuff. He’s a tool, and not a very sharp one. He has been used, and will be thrown away soon.
The power brokers want Romney in now. We saw how McCain could fight politically against his primary opponent in AZ. Romney has been given the green light to go for it. As others in here have said, I think he will be a smart and aggressive campaigner. Zero isn’t prepared for this, he won’t know what hit him.
Most important thing is you take care of your country, and make sure that House of Representatives and Senate is under real conservative control.
Take your country in control as you want to. Obama hates real fights, for he knows he will loose. Do you have options, no, tough choices you have and it is not easy.
Country first, emotions are for later discussion.
Kenya was pronounced “KEEN yah” until the Chinese Communist sponsored Mau Mau racist murderer of white women and children leader (and Obama’s father's commander) Jomo KEN yatta became president.
The country is now pronounced KEN yah.
Obama eating dog is nothing compared to what Obama’s daddy had to consume during his Mau Mau “oath” ceremonies...
...look them up—the face eating “bath salts” cannibal was a piker compared to what the Kenyan communists dined on.
Such histories help explain the evil of Obama.
He went up against Bobby Rush (former Black Panther) in a 2000 primary for a House seat and got his ass handed to him - 61% to 30%. The Bobby Rush money quote on Obama: "Barack Obama went to Harvard and became an educated fool. Barack is a person who read about the civil-rights protests and thinks he knows all about it."
My girls sing in a Latin choir and are on their fourth year of Latin language studies. Although it is a dead language, it is the language of Science.
You are correct!!!
Mitt’s waffle iron is always throwing curves. Now it’s throwing curves at Obama, who has already shown wonderful talent in stepping on his own je ne sais quoi without help.
Romney wants the Presidency, and he's willing to fight. Hopefully Romney wants the Presidency badly enough that he'll be willing to operate as a conservative, to forestall TEA Party opposition in 2016.
He thinks Romney is tough??? Wow who has been running against in the past?
Must not forget Jerusalem.
My friend. Don't worry. I'll tell them they have nothing to fear from your presidency.
I must say that while I’m not happy that Romney is the nominee, at least he ISN’T mclame, and is running like he wants to win.
“President Obama and his aides are expressing nostalgia for Sen. John McCain, the Republican opponent Obama defeated handily in the 2008 election.”
Yeh who wouldn’t want to run agains’t an opponent with senile dementia?
Well, that is only going to energize the far right, many of whom might otherwise stay home and refuse to vote for Romney because they thought he was a socialist.
Obama works against himself yet again.
I guess growing up with the belief system that the only good Commie is a dead Commie is now passe.
I actually hate Pharaoh Obama, and I have never truly hated anyone in my lifetime. Dislike is too kind a word for how he repulses me.
Just another Proud Member of the Obama Enemies List.
Obama must have gotten a copy of Meghan McCain's Diary.
Didn’t mean any offense. Sorry.
I think McCain honestly believed all the fawning ink written about him: how he was a moderate, “hands-across-the-aisle” sort of figure. A “maverick” in his own party. He figured that that if he didn’t say anything that could be construed remotely as “racist”, he’d win. And he kept his Senate seat, knowing he had power to return to if he lost. So he never even really tried. He spent more time telling folks what a “good guy” and “nice man” that Obama was than taking any clear stand against him.
Then he lost and JD Hayworth ran against him in a Senate primary and the gloves were off. Suddenly, McCain _really_ had something to lose (all that Senate power, seniority, and gravy) and he wasn’t about to let a radio talk show host come even close to beating him.
I pray for you friends, for really this is going to get really nasty, knowing Obama and his cohorts in media, wait; you will start hearing words of racism and more.
If he’s sweating already, and getting nervous, think what will happen at the end of the run.
He has made United States laughing country on international geo-political arena. I have read a lot on this forum about his opponent, can I write about it - no, for this is your house and you know what has to be done.
Same time reality can be cruel as well, but your country first, I notice many fighting and as I have written before, time for emotions is for later, now unite and fight, do not let enemies take advantage of you, don’t divide yourselves, move forward to make sure true conservatives are in two important chambers of your government.
It is all good friend, it is all right :}}}}}}
It was funny though :}}}}}}
No offense at all.
No doubt about Mitt, though. He wants it. Bad.
And, he needs obama and obama's record to run against.
He'd be beaten by almost any other potential demonrat other than Biden, especially by Hillary.
He needs obama.
