New Yorkers Leave Like East Germans Fled Communism
IBD Editorials ^ | May 30, 2012 | Editor

Big Government: New York thinks of itself as the place to be, but its high taxes have made it a place to flee. Those who have escaped the Empire State tax man could fill a major city.

From 1949 to 1961, more than 2.6 million of East Germany's 17 million population escaped to West Berlin or West Germany, a hemorrhage of humanity that led the Communists to construct the infamous Berlin Wall in 1961.

The state of New York, with about 19.5 million people, has no known plans to erect concrete barriers or barbed wire fences. But from 2000 to 2010 it suffered an exodus of some 3.4 million New Yorkers — nearly a million more people than in Germany's post-war experience and more than that of any other state.

And the outflow hasn't stopped. The income loss for the state is $45.6 billion, the Tax Foundation says.

Granted, it's not just one-way traffic. New York has plenty of immigration from abroad; its more than 4 million foreign-born residents give it the second-biggest immigrant population in America.

So net outward migration is about 1.3 million.

Most New York refugees are in sunny, zero-income-tax Florida. The Sunshine State, along with its rays, offer big relief from New York's state tax on income, which starts at almost 6.5% and reaches nearly 9% for the overly successful.

You’ve got the tense wrong.

There’s no “will” about it.

The NY budget is already beyond repair no matter how “fair” the taxes become.

The biggest cancer is the lack of understanding of how our 1st and 2nd Amendments were to be exercised.

We are naked in front of the enemy by choice. We allow them to disarm and humiliate us with taxes and words.

Unfortunately California is ahead.

The current California top rate is 9.3% @ about $100k and they are trying to raise it come November.

The problem with people fleeing Cali and NY, THEY TAKE THEIR DEMOCRAT VOTING PATTERNS WITH THEM. And they are too stupid to realize that’s what made their homes lousy places to live in the first place. Not everyone fleeing is a liberal of course but too many are. You broke it you own libs, stay there and die there.

“Mayor Bloomberg will announce that moving is prohibited.”

No joke... that’s something that may be a real possibility. California is losing businesses as well. I don’t know how they would legally justify it, but they might move to keep people from leaving.

Freepers in New York and California — you need to pay attention to this.

The pattern of libs sh*tting up where they originate from and moving onto another place to sh*t up reminds me of illegal aliens...

Look at California too. They wreck it, and move to Oregon, or Arizona.

The problem is they will still vote leftist.

It is an interesting dilemma. The ones that stay are not capitalists, they are the ones living on the teat. So they will accelerate the move to government welfare. The ones that leave, leave with their capitol, and I suspect tend to vote more and more conservative these days. The ponzi scheme of shifting the Republic to a Democracy is beginning to show some serious cracks in the foundation.
