Jim Jones’ sinister grip on San Francisco

How the Peoples Temple cult leader ensnared Harvey Milk and other progressive icons

pervert Harvey Milk w/ Death Cultist Jim Jones

“Season of the Witch,” the new book by Salon founder David Talbot, tells the story of the wild and bloody birth of “San Francisco values.” The following excerpt – Part 1 in a three-part series -- recounts one of the darker dramas before the ultimate triumph of those values.

Jim Jones, the strange and charismatic leader of Peoples Temple, proved a master at politically wiring San Francisco in the mid-1970s. The driven preacher had begun his climb up the political pyramid by planting roots in the Fillmore district, the city’s devastated black neighborhood. Jones moved into the Fillmore at its most vulnerable moment. Urban renewal czar Justin Herman – the Robert Moses of San Francisco — had “literally destroyed the neighborhood,” observed community activist Hannibal Williams, “[and] people were desperate for solutions, something to follow. Jim Jones was another solution. He had a charismatic personality that won the hearts and souls of people. And people followed him to hell. That’s where Jim Jones went. That’s where he took the people who followed him.”

Jones’s flock, ignored and scorned by society, was electrified by the preacher’s vision of a new Eden. Everybody was exalted in his services, even the lowliest recovering drunks and addicts. “He made us feel special, like something bigger than ourselves,” said one temple member. “Total equality, no rich or poor, no races,” said another. “We were alive in those services,” testified one more. “They had life, soul power.”

Jones — an oddball and renegade his entire life, someone who never felt at home in his own skin —

The article further details how Jim Jones cultivated political alliances and close ties with then S.F. Mayor George Moscone, Supervisor Harvey Milk, then Assemblyman Willie Brown, then Supervisor Dianne Feinstein, then Governor Jerry Brown, and even the 1976 Jimmy Carter/Walter Mondale campaign ... "the wild and bloody birth of San Francisco values" indeed; murderous marxist social utopianism in motion towards mass suicide and murder.

Jones was a full on progressive, social justice, collective salvation type.

When I think of demonic possession, I don’t think of the head spinning around crap. I think of Jones, Hitler, Stalin, Manson, and Alinski.

I can’t recall if Jimmy Carter ever attended the peoples temple but am sure Rosalyn did.

I remember them praising Jim Jones to high heaven. When I read that he would throw a Bible on the floor and stomp on it, I knew what he really was.

My old Man spent a lot of time in SF in the late ‘30’s, we had a lot of family who settled there in the 1849-50 time frame. He said it was a very strange place even then.

David Talbot is wrong on several points,

1) It was much worse, much more evil, and much more premeditated than he suggests.

2) No one was "ensnared", San Fransicko progressives all had the same morals, ethics and agenda as Jones, they all eagerly made the standard deal with Satan.

3) San Franciscans got what they deserved and have degenerated consistently continuing through today.

"He was an avowed communist."

And even a party member!

Thus the need for this typical leftist cover-up and misdirection. In approximately 2,500 words, this article/excerpt so carefully omits that one word that explains all the excesses and the ultimate fate of Jim Jones, his Jonestown and all his true believer.

Because that one word - "Communist" - is not only at the root of who Jim Jones was but also what his "Temple" was about and even more importantly why his "useful idiot" allies on the Left were bound at the hip to that madman then and must cover-up the truth today .

Milk knew how dangerous Jones was, but did anything he could to get elected. There’s even a handwritten note from him telling Jones his name was “cut in stone” in support of the Temple

“Wow, I had no idea”

Me neither. Is that Harvey Milk pictured on the right and Jones on the left?

If that’s Milk he really does look like Sean Penn in the picture.

I do sort of remember that Jones had some prominence, or had had some, when that mass suicide/murder occured.

Maybe that really marked the end of the wild & crazy 60s in a way.

So much crazy stuff was going on back in those days.

I remember it well, was working in the Fillmore when Jonestown went down, went through People’s Temple when they auctioned all their stuff off.

Jones was also heavy into Black Liberation Theology, same as Jeremiah Wright.

Jones didn’t just plant his roots in the Filmore; he also planted some on the east side of the bay in Lafayette, and south in Santa Cruz, in both cases in the Disciples of Christ churches, populated with lazy liberal looney school teachers and pro communist agitators.

Many in both towns still think Jones got a bad rap.

I was thinking much the same thing; I’m glad you wrote that.

Jim Jones didn’t birth “San Francisco values”. He just took advantage of them. But then, that’s what they’re for; to siphhon money and power from fools to the “elites”.
