‘60 Minutes’ Attacks Sugar as Toxic, Like ‘Cocaine’
http://newsbusters.org/blogs/mike-ciandella/2012/04/03/60-minutes-attacks-sugar-toxic-cocaine ^

Sugar is a “toxin” that is killing the unwitting masses, according to an April 1, “60 Minutes” hosted by CNN’s chief medical correspondent, Dr. Sanjay Gupta.

Gupta and all of the medical experts that he interviewed argued that sugar leads to heart disease, cancer (by leading to the creation of insulin, which cancer cells use to trigger their growth), and that sugar can actually be compared to certain drugs, like “cocaine,” in that it triggers the pleasure centers in the brain.

“New research coming out of some of America’s most respected institutions is starting to find that sugar, the way many people are eating it today, is a toxin,” Gupta said at the start of the segment.

Dr. Robert H. Lustig, MD, University of California San Francisco Professor of Pediatrics, was the primary expert in piece. Lustig told Gupta that he believes sugar should be treated the same way as tobacco and alcohol, substances which are still legal, but regulated.

“Ultimately, this is a public health crisis, and when there’s a public health crisis you have to do big things and you have to do them across the board. Tobacco and alcohol are perfect examples … I think that sugar belongs in this exact same wastebasket,” said Lustig.

” The body doesn’t require nicotine and the hundreds of other poisons in tobacco to survive.”

Mine does.

Sanjay Gupta is a moron.

There.

I think we should start with the premise that they are wrong and work our way along from there. Oxygen and water are also toxic in the right quantities.

And I know a guy who died from not smoking.

It happens.

Sugar from fruit (fructose) is good for you in moderation, since the body needs it. Refined sugar (surcose) can be problematic, especially if the intake is high.

At least you have your priorities, that’s good.

As with anything, moderation is key. Sedentary lifestyles are more the problem than sugar. If the engine is hot enough it will burn anything. I punish my body at the gym and punish my liver with booze which of course breaks down to sugar.

Put another way, if I can quote the 60 min types, keep your laws off my body. I’ll take care of myself.

I heard that a twinkie can almost outlast cockroaches, and possibly Keith Richards. Depends on how much coke the twinkie snorted.

I avoid all food items containing refined sugar and wheat products. This includes corn syrup.

Meat, fish, fowl, some pork and lamb, eggs, nuts, vegetables, and fruits low in carbohydrate such as strawberries and melons. I drink two small glasses of dry red wine daily per my doctor’s orders.

It is the refined additives such as white sugar, corn syrup and white flour that are making Americans obese. These three appear in many prepared items for sale in food stores.

Yup, thats what I was thinking as well. Either a sin tax, or an all out assault like they do with smoking.

Yet quoting from the same...ahem...experts, research indicates that obese people live longer than normal or underweight people.

And after the age of 55 you statistaclly had a much higher mortality rate if your cholesterol was in the “ normal” range as opposed to those who suffer from higher cholesterol.

And statistically your chance of dying from lung cancer was much greater if you drank milk every day then if you smoked.

Which brings up the famous line of Charley Brown to Lucy “ Tell your statistics to shut up”

Agreed. Problem is, my mind is still stuck at 25, but my body and liver are staring at 50. And it is a bitch to maintain the equilibrium when you're squeezed between those two hard facts.

"As democracy is perfected, the office represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. We move toward a lofty ideal. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their hearts desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron."

We will have to empirically see if soros outlasts cockroaches. My bet is soros stays longer.

Dear Chessplayer:

A lot of the syndromes popping up today are related to sugar and yeast.

Too much sugar in a lot of what we consume (more, certainly, than God intended). Fast-acting yeast is a problem, too.

For folks like me with Systemic Candidas (originally misdiagnosed as Fibromyalgia), sugar/yeast causes all sorts of nasty, debilitating problems.

That being said, Big Daddy FedGov doesn't need to get into our diets.

Yup, that is exactly where this kind of “study” these days leads. Expect more controls on everything we eat.

Funniest post of the day.

I remember telling my son about 20 years ago that “Keith Richards won’t last another year”

Well I guess he showed me.
