The sea ice area anomaly in the Arctic is -.23mm square kilometers (area 98% of normal), while the Antarctic anomaly is .408mm square kilometers (area 12% above normal). The Arctic sea ice level has not been above normal since 2005, so a complete recovery from the low of 2007 may be observed in the next few days. Also note that the anomaly is calibrated versus the 1979-2008 mean. Using the mean from 1979-2011, it is already above normal.

Not by fire, but by ice ............

Your chart conveniently leaves out any consideration of sea ice coverage during the past decade in determining the average.

From the NSIDC site: "Through their research, our scientists help further understanding of the many changes that our planet is undergoing."

That or planet is undergoing. Sounds like an agenda being undertaken there. An objective scientist would have better phrased it, "that our planet undergoes" rather than IS undergoing. After all, the planet has undergone and is undergoing changes since the big bang. Just MHO.

I know. Using an average of the past decade lowers the average coverage and makes it appear as if we are recovering to normal conditions. Using longer term data when the average coverage was higher is a truer measure of whether or not ice coverage is returning to normal.

—That or planet is undergoing.—

They are just stating the obvious there. Nothing in nature is static.
