March 20, 2012 10:48am 172 Comments Romney schools 'free birth control' student byCharlie Spiering Commentary Staff Writer Follow on Twitter:

Campaigning at Bradley University in Peoria, Ill. yesterday, Mitt Romney quickly criticized a student for wanting "free stuff" from the government.

"You're all for like 'yay freedom and all this stuff and yay pursuit of happiness,'" said the college-aged girl. "You know what would make me happy? Free birth control."

"Let me tell you something, if you're looking for free stuff that you don't have to pay for, vote for the other guy," Romney told the student. "That's what he's all about."

Romney continued, "Politicians get up and promise you all kinds of free stuff, more and more stuff that you won't have to pay for and you know what? We get elected that way, in many cases, politicians do, that's not something I subscribe to.

Romney insisted on telling the truth to voters and "demand sacrifices" from people.

"The idea that of borrowing a trillion dollars more than we bring in is not just bad economics, its immoral," Romney said to the crowd.

This story does not pass the smell test.

I say the girl was Romney plant sent there specifically to lob a softball he could hit out of the park for the benefit of those hillbillies in the Tea Party.

Good post, that was my first thought as well.

Instead, he loses a chance to educate an 0bot and others in the audience that nothing is “free” from the government.

The only obvious conclusion to take from this story is that the entrance standards for Bradley University are so incredibly low that their students aren’t even required to demonstrate the ability to form a simple sentence in their primary language.

No wonder she wants birth control. Even she’s afraid she might reproduce.

I recall the “as your children” question that Bush 41 was asked. Rush said the answer should have been “I not your father”.

Great answer.

In my experience, most sheeperals really cringe, as if physically struck,
when you point out that anything the demand government “give” is taken by force from someone else.

To drive the point home - “yes, you advocate and authorize sticking a gun in someone else’s face in order to provide what you call ‘free’”.

As TPig said - how very progressive of you.

The Government won't pay for freebies and Mitt considers that sacrafice?

Wilderness indeed if you think that will win over Conservatives.

He schooled her? In what way did he educate her? He never corrected her at all, he simply told her to go vote for somebody who believes a she does. Mittens had the perfect opportunity to educate this fluke about how nothing is free, but he failed miserably.

If Mitt stays on this track he just might win over conservatives.

What track? Do you mean where he lies and hopes nobody checks what he says?

Romneycare (which is the prototype for Obamacare) offers FREE ABORTIONS.

That shows that Mitt doesn’t really understand conservatism.

Conservatism is hard, it has to be taught.
Liberalism is easy, it’s simply felt.

If you think he’s just a liar that’s cool, but he gives a good speech.

A good speech is telling America that sacrificing means the Government won't give you freebies?

That is what he just said in that video.

Mitt’s not my first choice by a long shot but short of a miracle at the convention it looks like he will end up with the nomination. If conservatives stay home in November like I almost did in 2008 then we’re indeed phuked.

In my day "responsibility" meant bringing the girl a engagement ring and a marriage vow.

Err, I don't think he was talking about the girls you wanted to marry ;)

If that is true, then Romney can't even handle his own set up question because blew it.

Agree. What he said was a good start, but he needed to clearly explain the fallacy of the “free lunch” mentality.

I remember that question as well.
My answer would have been: “Sir, if you see government as a parental figure, please do not vote....ever”.

I read the transcript. Romney’s answer was a good answer; just not the “right” one in my opinion. And that is his problem, as far as I am concerned. When given a chance to drive a point home in a forceful manner, we chooses to couch his answer in a more acceptable politico speak. That may endear him to the GOP ruling class and mushy middle. It does nothing for people who really passionate about the path our country is on, though.

That’s my opinion, your mileage may vary.
