LOS ANGELES (CBS) When you head down to the beach for a little fun this summer, county officials want you to leave the pigskin at home.
The Board of Supervisors this week agreed to raise fines to up to $1,000 for anyone who throws a football or a Frisbee on any beach in Los Angeles County.
In passing the 37-page ordinance on Tuesday, officials sought to outline responsibilities for law enforcement and other public agencies while also providing clarification on beach-goer activities that could potentially disrupt or even injure the public.
The updated rules now prohibit any person to cast, toss, throw, kick or roll any object other than a beach ball or volleyball upon or over any beach between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
Exceptions allow for ball-throwing in predesignated areas, when a person obtains a permit, or playing water polo in or over the Pacific Ocean.
However, during the winter off-season, the new rules will be relaxed.
Officials warned that any activities that could potentially any person or property on or near the beach should not be allowed during the peak summer season.
Your kids could also end up costing you big bucks: the ordinance also prohibits digging any hole deeper than 18 inches into the sand except where permission is granted for film and TV production services only.
I was thinking of NJ beaches; they are very crowded, and self-policing doesn’t work. I could go for the police warnings, but each cop would have to be fluent in Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Hindi, Chinese (both Cantonese and Mandarin), and Farsi.
The answer here is to simply avoid the cheapest beaches; for an extra $10 you’re surrounded by “regular” people (to paraphrase South Park’s Eric Cartman in regards to the water park).
Many lakes/pools have started cracking down on the adult men swimming in tidy whities - it really just got wierd. A whole clan would show up for a picnic (without realizing there was swimming available), and in a few minutes you would think you were on the banks of the Amazon River.
Thank God. I was afraid our 2.4% un-employment rate and low cost of living would attract all those immigrants that run wild all over your....beach. As for noo joursey, we can drop that into Lake Texoma. Please....stay away....
So I guess drunk drivers can still drive up and down the beaches. G-d forbid you get hit with a Frisbee or football or sumpthin’ airborne.
Goes along with the statewide $558.00 fine for first time offense of a slow right turn where there is a red light camera. Used to be called, “California stop.” (Actually $479 plus $79 to avoid the one point that could double your insurance). Ain’t socialism great!
Best be very fast if you intend to do that in my town. Leash laws, you know, even on the beach.
What a gorgeous stretch of sand that is...
I knew people who lived in LA were Stepford people.
La la land.
I can’t stop laughing since I read this story. I wonder if the chuckleheads that voted for this can be identified.
after being mercilessly assaulted with a football.
It's a pandemic. The thanks we owe to the nanny-state bureaucrats for saving us from ourselves.
Consequently, government feels obliged to legislate against it. No footballs, no frisbees, no smoking, no drinking, no tasty foods, no moving around on the streets and highways without your government-mandated seatbelt in your government-designed and approved conveyance.
Everything not prohited is mandatory.
Might as well just go ahead and prohibit everything but sneezing and sex (unless of course, the sex results in another human being being brought into the ecosystem).
There were quite a few harder to reach areas that were most serene.
Except for Santa Monica and Malibu on Sundays, there was usually plenty of sand to do whatever you wanted to activity wise. During the week, most were quite deserted, more so during school days ;-)
Somebody out there might be enjoying themselves.
Nanny State beaurocrats = the new Puritans.
Don't forget, people are shark bait. ban swimming in the the ocean!
Mexican cat juggling is still free though.
No Running.
No footballs
No Frisbys
Stay out of the water
Stay off the sand.
REMEMBER! THIS IS YOUR PARK!
