Donald Trump endorsed Mitt Romney for president Thursday, saying he's impressed by the Republican candidate's debate prowess and believes he could easily beat President Obama in November.

"Mitt is tough. He's smart. He's sharp. He's not going to allow bad things to continue to happen to this country that we all love," Trump said in Las Vegas, telling the candidate to "go out and get 'em."

The real estate mogul, speaking briefly with reporters before the announcement, said that even though he "never knew" Romney before the race began, he's come to know him in recent months.

"His general attitude and the last two debates were very impressive," Trump said.

He also cited Romney's position on China, calling the former Massachusetts governor

Good sir, the post was one of concurrence, not contention.

As a Newt supporter, I feared a Trump endorsement would hurt Gingrich.......I’m glad the Donald has endorsed the Willard. Baby killing supporting RINO’s and self promoters should stick together

Hope it hurts Mith!

If this helps Willard, it will be because enough people fear if Willard doesn't get the nomination, Trump will run third-party, split the R vote and guarantee four more years for The Kenyan Marxist (whom, lest we forget, was The Donald's choice four years ago).

It is funny the change in 24 hours. Yesterday the Trump endorsement was going to be the game changer for Newt. Today Trump no longer important here.

Putting aside the Mitt/Newt fight, this is actually really good news if you want to beat Obama in the fall. I had always worried about Trump going rogue himself and running as a third party or getting behind someone with big money for a third party.

A third party candidate guarantees another term for Obama, ala Clinton/Perot/Bush in 1992. I just hope we can continue to dodge that bullet.

If FOX News is correct that the Gingrich campaign was leaking the plans for an endorsement, I can’t begin to imagine how angry Gingrich was at his staff members for leaking wrong information and presumably providing him the same wrong information.

Stuff happens in campaigns and professional politicians and political observers understand that.

The truly interesting situation would be if Trump actually **DID** plan to endorse Gingrich and then reneged at the last minute. As I said yesterday in a different thread, it really does make more sense for Trump to endorse Romney, but if he gave the Gingrich campaign reason to believe otherwise, somebody is going to suffer some very serious wrath at Gingrich’s hands.

Trump reserved the right to run as a spoiler if the republicans nominate the “wrong candidate” (Trump’s words). So, if Gingrich wins the nomination, I guess that would be the wrong candidate, which means Trump would run, just the scenario you are worried about.

If Romney does lock up the nomination, then it won’t matter who gets elected to the White House. They are both two peas in a pod and will further sink this once great nation into the dust bin of history.

The problem with marginalizing the 30-35% conservatives is that that is a ruling plurality in a 3 way race. If the liberals and the mini-liberals split the lib and moderate vote, then that does two things.

1. It opens up a real possibility that the conservatives win. 32, 32, and 35 is a win for conservatism. Wouldn’t that be cool.

2. Someone will say, “But they’ll just coalesce their forces to defeat the conservatives.” That, too, would be a victory, for that would mean the TWO main parties would then be one of the two liberal parties and the conservative party. If stealing from one of the two is the way to victory, then that would mean 42, 23, 35. It changes the number 2 party and announces the birth of a new dominant party. A victory for conservatism.

The math favors the creation of a new, REASONABLE conservative party.

It could have helped Newt, but come to think of it, this coalescence of plutocrats outside of Newt probably helps Newt even better. What was Newt’s biggest money fling of his whole life? When he was a pricey consultant for Freddie Mac for a few years (and it wasn’t ridden with any scandal best as we know). Newt (and Santorum) look positively redneck with duct tape on their boots compared to the Plutocrat Pair.

Knock it off! Jim doesn't cater to people knocking about other freepers.

So...you who have been here all of two years...who didn't even suffer the anguish of election night...much less Monica Lewinsky and the Blue Dress...are gonna tell me what Jim likes or doesn't like? Really?

Wow. Aren't we a little pretentious when we turn two.

And BTW...the day I cannot make a CORRECT observation and POST it is the day I will have no use for Free Republic. Sounds like you would like that day to be today. Thankfully...it's not your site.

You see Mary, Conservatism...AT ITS CORE...needs HONOR and integrity. Jim understands this. That's why I post here. That's why I get my news here. When an individual FLIPS and FLOPS...that VIOLATES my conservative CORE. Romney VIOLATES my core. And THUS...it VIOLATES my core when people think "the Don" is The Man one second...and then think he's demon spawn the next. If you don't know who this guy is before now...you are a fool.

And it violates my CORE that I KNOW just as sure as I am typing this...that the GOP will one day pass recess appointments just like Obama did...and say "You did it first!"...and there will be those among us who will cheer. Think I'm wrong? Wait and see.

AND...if you haven't seen that a lot of FReepers are POLL hounds...and scream poll results when it is GOOD NEWS...and down play the results or out right dismiss them when its bad...then you just don't pay attention.

And finally...if you couldn't see that I was writing a little tongue in cheek...then you are wack...yo...

That’s when Bush was a “great conservative.” But...the site was actually full of moderates back then. Since those days...we’ve moved significantly to the right.

I wrote earlier Romney made more sense for Trump.

Endorsing Newt would not help, just underscore the failed marriages baggage.

If I remember correctly The Donald was to hold a debate back in early December and just about every candidate brushed him off except Newt. Trump shows his true colors and he lost me in ever giving him much credibility for his positions.
