Sources fearful over Manning’s ability to return
Yahoo Sports ^ | January 31,2012 | Jason Cole

The nerves in Manning’s arm are not healing as quickly as hoped and, worse, don’t appear to be progressing at enough of a rate to indicate that he will play again, according to two sources with knowledge of Manning’s rehabilitation from neck surgery. The vertebrae in his neck that were fused have healed as expected and Manning began throwing in December. But he hasn’t shown improvement in velocity on his passes, and the two sources fear he likely never will again.

In addition, two league-affiliated doctors with experience in spinal fusion surgery said it could take up to a year before Manning knows if he can return. Both said the risk is too great for Manning to play again and, because of the timeline, neither would recommend the Colts pay Manning the $28 million bonus he is owed in March.

As for Manning’s side of it, he remains confident that he will return to action next season even as the progress remains slow. Last week in an extensive interview with Bob Kravitz of the Indianapolis Star, Manning expressed frustration as to why so many people who he has worked with over the years have been let go by the team, including team president Bill Polian and coach Jim Caldwell. While Manning understands the team needing to move forward, he believes he will be able to play again.

I would want an iron clad guarantee from the docs that it’s safe for me to play again or I would retire and enjoy my wealth. I wouldn’t risk re-injuring a neck.

>>Manning who?<<

The brother of the QB whose defense got him into the Super Bowl.

I would conduct a fan poll to see if they think I should risk my health and well being to play for them again.

(necessary?)

Weren’t there rumors he went to EuroSplat to get embryonic stem cell treatment?

If so, I don’t feel anything for him.

This is a Sugar Ray Leonard moment. Manning should get out while he’s still relatively healthy.

I would also credit that offensive line.

....

Anyway, the Colts should let Peyton go. $26 million payment coming up if they keep him around when they desperately need to rebuild that team.

No tears for Payton. He has his millions. AND all the TV channels will be pounding his door to be a talking head. ESPN might move on him for Monday Night Football. Or NBC for Sunday night. CBS certainly for a big game talker. Even for college football games. He will have his pick and at a massive salary.

Peyton Manning will be cut before the bonus due in March. The Colts won the “Suck for Luck” derby, they have their new man, they will move on.

Have you seen his Subway commercial as a ref at the coin toss?
I’ll bet he’s as funny in real life as he is in his TV commercials.

He shouldn’t run the risk of damaging his neck again.
Become QB coach or simply retire and do TV game color.

For a while, it really looked like Peyton was a lock to Brett Favre’s NFL career records for touchdown passes, yards, and victories. Now it looks like that isn’t going to happen. Still, Peyton Manning has had a terrific career.

Peyton had a great run. He needs to get out and think of the rest of his life before something worse happens.

Exactly.

Peyton became a dad last year, too, of twins, after being married more than a decade.

I hope the Peyton era ends with dignity and that he goes on to great things outside of football — at least on-field.

The brother of the QB whose defense got him into the Super Bowl.

Along with several relatively inexperienced wide receivers, a frequently injured and cobbled together O-line and a pretty decent kicking game. Does anyone know if there's ever been a 7 loss team in the Super Bowl before?

I live in Indy and am NOT a Colts fan.
But Peyton Manning is a fine fellow by all accounts.
He and wife just had their first kids (twins) last year.

He should retire and enjoy life, and avoid orthopedic tragedy.
If he wants a challenging next career, he will make a superb head coach some day, just like Harbaugh. There are a lot of folks here who say he was doing more coaching than the offensive coordinator already.
