Tennessee speed guns: Payback vow on NYers for 9/11 Memorial bust
NY Post ^ | January 20, 2012 | LAURA ITALIANO

Gun nuts in the Tennessee state legislature have declared civil war on New Yorkers — saying they will retaliate for the prosecution of a woman who was carrying an illegal pistol at the 9/11 Memorial. A resolution winding its way through the Tennessee legislature warns New Yorkers not to drive through their state — because the Highway Patrol is “gunning” for us. A Knoxville-based legislator, who moonlights as a farmer, is so angry over the Tennessee tourist’s gun arrest last month that his resolution condemns it as a “grave miscarriage of justice” — and reminds New Yorkers to “drive carefully” if we come visit.

“We remind the citizens of New York, especially those residing in New York City, to drive carefully through the great state of Tennessee, paying extra attention to our speed limits,” reads House Resolution 585, which urges charges be dropped against Meredith Graves. A registered nurse and fourth-year medical student, Graves was arrested when she tried to check her Tennessee-registered weapon at the 9/11 Memorial in December. It’s illegal to carry the weapon in this state. Graves faces a mandatory minimum prison sentence of 3 1/2 years if convicted of felony weapons possession; prosecutors have not said if they will seek an indictment on that or on a lesser charge.

Answer to your question, too Damn Many! :^}

Time to remind people of Ludowici, Georgia and their fast green light in the 1950-1960 era.
Politician from Canada having heart attack while receiving a ticket changed all that!

“It’s a fine way to make New Yorkers understand that the rest
of the country won’t kiss their a$$es anymore.”

Yes we have already kissed their butt and in very fine fashion. They reward us by playing gun control dictator as with this Tennessee woman, and we reward them with trillions for shafting us with their banker corruption. While they got trillions from TARP and the Fed, we are stuck with the liability and inevitable bill. The NYCers have the connections that give them immunity from mega theft, while we from other states get charged with crimes in their city that are legal in other states. Think about it.

What kind of responsible gunowner checks their gun anywhere? We suspect this was a set-up, to drum up publicity for this woman.
*****************************************************
If I remember this story correctly, I think there was a sign that said something like “check your gun”.
So, she did.

Let me tell you what this is, absolutely despicable.

He doesn't like something the NYC GOVERNMENT did so this legislator suggests punishing NY State drivers (who are doing his state's economy a favor by visiting) with unfair parking tickets? Petty, lame, and counterproductive. His beef is with the government not innocent drivers visiting his state.

I am disgusted at seeing so many positive comments about this idiotic bill.

My sister has carried a concealed 45 in her purse for decades. No permit. She’s been stopped a few times. Mississippi law officers have simply told her to be careful. She’s single, living in a remote area. Thank God for common sense.

New Yorkers pride themselves for negotiating well and driving a hard bargain but they seem pretty happy settling for 80% of the Bill of Rights since they have only a trace of the 1st amendment and none of the 2nd.

Which opens the question is NY alone in denying reciprocity?

No, New Jersey denies it as well. Also effectively denies CCW for residents, i.e. May Issue with demonstrated proof of imminent threat to life.

Lady needs to plead innocent by reason of insanity. What sane person would voluntarily travel to NYC?

Yes, in NY state it takes over five years and a lot of money and paperwork to get a pistol permit. If you are lucky, you will also be granted the privilege of carrying concealed but it is not an automatic right.

However, it is not illegal to carry. It is just difficult to get the permit.

Pleading insanity is just as bad to her as a felony conviction. She’s in medical school and either one would make it harder and more hoops to jump through to get a license.

“Those residents need to understand that not standing in opposition to what their legislators are doing may have consequences.”

Please explain what the hell this has to do with the subject at hand?

The laws in question here are laws of NEW YORK CITY.

Concealed carry is legal in NY STATE.

#1 Get a map.

#2 Learn that not everyone from NY is from NYC.

#3 Learn that the residents of NY STATE have no say over laws made in and for NY CITY.

#4 License plates identify the STATE in which a vehicle is registered. It does NOT identify the CITY in which it is registered.

I live in NY. I do not live in or anywhere near NYC. Yet my plates are the same.

Why the hell should I have to be targeted by a bunch of geography challenged dopes because of something a bunch of liberals 200 miles away from me are doing?

I was actually planning a trip this summer that would have included driving in, and spending a fair chunk of money in Tennessee. I just cancelled those plans.

“because of the actions of their state”

It IS NOT the actions of the State. It is the actions of a CITY in that state.

NY CITY is not the State.

This whole thing is a NY CITY problem.

Concealed carry is NOT illegal in NY STATE.

Good for Tenn! Another reason to go the big car show in Pigeon Forge this summer and to check out Nashville and visit Graceland.

Indeed, if New York is going to hit Tennesseans with unjust treatment. Tennesseans aut to hit them right back.

Retropositiy is a two way street, and if New York wont honor the documents of Tennessee. Tennessee aut to take a serous look at New Yorkers and their documents in Tennessee.

Likewise Tennesseans aut to treat New Yorkers with the same level of respect New Yorkers treat Tennesseans in the carrying out of their law enforcement.

New York should not be allowed to miss treat the citizens of other states with impunity. It is the responsibility of Tennessee to assert her rights and make New York respect them.

This is kind of asinine. I’d sooner see Tennesseans boycotting New York City.

nope, not at all silly. it’s ime to start handing out mandatory 25 year prison sentences for possession of anything more than a gram of marijuana. I’d let thieves out early to make room for the pot heads.

“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”

New York is violating the constitution. Tennessee should retaliate. Beware, all you New Yawkers - you drive through my state and make a wrong move and the citizens of this fine state along with our various police officers, will make you aware of OUR laws!
