Can Gingrich Break Through?
Wall Street Journal ^ | 11//01/11 | PAUL A. GIGOT

Posted on 11/01/2011 5:57:06 PM PDT by jageorge72

The College Board and News Corp. sponsored a forum on education with four GOP presidential candidates last week, and the runaway winner was Newt Gingrich. (Truth in advertising: I moderated the session along with Joel Klein, the former New York schools chancellor who now runs an educational unit for our employer, News Corp. Each candidate received 30 minutes, which was refreshing after the 30-second trivial pursuits of the debates.)

Michele Bachmann (local control), Rick Santorum (moral values) and Herman Cain (business principles) stuck mainly to their talking points, but Mr. Gingrich kept the crowd of 1,000 or so engaged and entertained with a wide-ranging tutorial on everything from the failures of "L.A. Unified" to Jeb Bush's Florida "virtual school." The session was a reminder of Mr. Gingrich's knowledge of government and rhetorical skills, which were overwhelmed by his early campaign missteps.

He’s an elitist. Can’t completely trust him. Has lost the conservative fire in his belly. Too much time on the couch with Pelosi, et al. BUT - refreshing to see him debate and share his ideas. Would vote for him over
Obama.

Gingrich is a talker—nothing more,

The problem with Gingrich is judgement. He’s been through at least 3 wives. If he can’t get that right why would anyone think he has what it takes to be president?

Oh my—how judgemental. I know, I know. How he manages his personal life should have nothing to do with his public life. Sorry, I’m not into schizophrenia as a normal lifestyle.

Good question....if you go to Redstate they have a pro Perry article on their front page every day. All this for a guy in fourth or fifth place depending on the poll.

Actually I know why Redstate keep tyring to prop him up. It’s because he announced at their convention. They really are becoming the pravda of conservative media. If they would just admit their in the tank for Perry, at least they’d be honest.

On this thread they’re treating Newt as the second coming of ... Newt. http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2800973/posts

This thread comes as a relief. Was on one earlier tonight where everyone was swooning over Newt’s intelligence and debating abilities.

If anyone asks I’ll be happy to source everything.

1. Gingrich acknowledged in congressional testimony that GATT/WTO would transfer a huge amount of power to an international body. Then he not only voted for it, he helped push it though after the 1994 elections in a special lame duck session of congress because he knew it wouldn’t pass after the Republicans took the majority.

2. Gingrich almost single-handedly rammed through NAFTA, and later opined that he wanted it expanded to include all of Central and South America.

3. As late as 2005 Gingrich recommended we greatly increase funding of the United Nations Human Rights Commission and UN peacekeeping operations.

4. Gingrich worked with Clinton to renew Most Favored Nation status for China.

5. Despite Gingrich’s constant bragging, the federal debt increased every year he was Speaker of the House, as it has every year since 1957. Yes, they did pass balanced budgets, but they then passed supplemental spending bills and emergency spending bills. Remember, at the same time Social Security was bringing in huge surpluses, every dime of which they spent.

6. Gingrich voted for the creation of the Department of Education and massively increased it’s funding during his tenure as Speaker.

7. Gingrich is an academic turned politician. He has no executive experience.

8. Gingrich quote: “The American challenge in leading the world is compounded by our Constitution.”

9. Gingrich was not elected Speaker of the House in 1995 because he was an anti-establishment, strict constituionalist, citizen legislator. He got elected Speaker because he was at the very epicenter of Washington elitist power politics.

Hey, we’ve got someone who by all accounts is a wonderful family man, married only once, devoted to his daughters....How’s that working out for us? Perhaps we can all come down off our high horse just long enough to maybe salvage the rapidly deteriorating American experiment. Remember, Reagan was divorced - he needed a mulligan to “get it right”. To the best of my knowledge, there’s no empirical evidence that how one conducts their most private relationships has any bearing on their professional performance (save, of course, truly outrageous behavior like Berlusconi in Italy).

How is Newt Gingrich old news? Does the media say so? Have you looked at his 21st Century Contract w/ America? If that is what you consider “old news”, I’d love to see what new, bold, GOOD ideas your candidate is proposing.

What is “old news” is the constant knee-jerk, anti-Newt reactions here.

If Romney falters, the establishment Republicans will unite behind Perry because they know they can control them. Rick is for sale: he always has been and always will be.

Newt’s got no more baggage then anyone else. Not a fan of the whole field but Newt could easily put Obama Azzhole down in any debate. The guys smart and has got his shxt together regardless.

Not sure what FRs want but there is no “PERFECT” candidate.
