Some Of Sarah Palin's Ideas Cross The Political Divide
The New York Times ^ | 9/9/2011 | Anand Girinharadas

CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS — Let us begin by confessing that, if Sarah Palin surfaced to say something intelligent and wise and fresh about the present American condition, many of us would fail to hear it.

That is not how we’re primed to see Ms. Palin. A pugnacious Tea Partyer? Sure. A woman of the people? Yup. A Mama Grizzly? You betcha.

But something curious happened when Ms. Palin strode onto the stage last weekend at a Tea Party event in Indianola, Iowa. Along with her familiar and predictable swipes at President Barack Obama and the “far left,” she delivered a devastating indictment of the entire U.S. political establishment — left, right and center — and pointed toward a way of transcending the presently unbridgeable political divide.

Somewhat off-topic, but "pay to play" is no more than a polite term for BRIBERY

Actually, in political context at FR, "pay to play" means "campaign contributions to the candidate we want to attack". If the same contributions are given to someone we like, it's called "grassroots support", or "excellent fundraising effort".

Politicians receive money from people who like what the politicians do. Donors give money to politicians who support laws the donors like, and oppose laws the donors dislike.

If we all give money to Palin, and then she does something we don't like, we'll all be upset, and threaten to stop donating. When the RNC started supporting candidates we didn't like, we all pulled support.

The "not one thin dime" campaign was a message to the RNC -- run candidates who will vote the way we want them to vote, and we will send you money, do otherwise and we won't.

When we learn of candidates running, we send them letters -- promise to vote the way we want, and we will give you money. "Pay to Play" -- Sign the pledge to not raise my taxes, and I'll give you money. We are PAYING the politician to keep our taxes low.

"I make up my own mind on my own terms."

As do the rest of us but it is your history to classify anyone who disagrees with you in those terms you cite that ultimately discredits you at the same time. Enjoy your duck soup.

I argued with another freeper about a specific instance in Texas. Perry received money from an interest group formed to push tort reform, on the 1st day he was allowed to get donations after becoming Governor (they prohibited donations during the legislative session, even for the Governor). Then, because it was the veto session, he vetoed dozens of bills, 4 of which were opposed by the donors.

That freeper, and the democrats, called that a clear “pay for play”. (since then, the legislature has extended the no-donations period to include the veto session).

But my argument was that it would look a lot worse if Perry vetoed those bills on the last day of veto session, and then got the donations the next day. In my opinion, getting the money right after doing something looks more like a bribe than getting the money and then doing something.

But the argument was interesting — because it’s all a matter of perception. The only way to avoid any perception of taking donations for action is to only take donations from people who are opposed to what you do. Of course, nobody would give you money who opposed what you do.

The only other way to remove the appearance is to ban contributions altogether, and implement a public financing system. Conservatives oppose that, so when people argue “appearance” to attack politicians they don’t like, they always define the “appearance of wrongdoing” for the specific politician they are trying to attack.

I am not sure what Palin’s official say is on running third party?

Still haven't read her book, have you? It's in there.

>>There is a method to NYT’s madness....if folks do not grasp what this Fascist Rag is up to...over all these years, they’ve learned nothing...<<

It was an online article by a writer no one’s ever heard of until today, but he must have a pretty good head on his shoulders because he certainly figured out how to get his name out there in a hurry...

Populism is a discredited philosophy because it panders to the masses, promising them the impossible can be accomplished by tearing down the wealthy. Palin is no populist. She believes (I believe anyway) in individual liberty, and she is opposed to those who threaten that liberty, be they socialists, confused liberals, union thugs, or corporate chieftains who ally with absolutely anyone in power.

I have no idea where this speech will put Palin, nor do I think she’s going to run now. Perry sucked all the air out of the room when he announced and vaulted to the top of the pack so quickly. All she will do by announcing now is split the Perry/Palin/Bachmann/Cain vote and enable Romney to come on strong again.

Perhaps she’s setting herself up to be nominated VP again. Perry/Palin would reassure a lot of Tea Partyers, though I think Perry/Rubio would be the stronger ticket right now.

Just my thoughts, for what they’re worth...

What loopy world do you come out of?

Palin has over and over and over again said that the GOP platform aligns perfectly with her views and ideals.

It’s good to create doubts in your opposition. I know there are many involuntary union members. I know that some don’t care a whit how their leaders tell them to vote. I’d love to see more of their “brothers and sisters” vote for sensibility when choosing a president.

Untangling this tortured sentence, I think you're trying to say I am the pot calling the kettle black? I beg to differ. If anything, I get accused of falling for MSM talking points, etc, even though I don't even watch television, and the only paper I read is my local paper.

I can't recall a single time when I accused anyone of falling for media spin. Media spin is basically irrelevant to me. If you can correct my memory, go ahead.
