Scientists see sunspot "hibernation" but no Ice Age

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Sunspot cycles -- those 11-year patterns when dark dots appear on the solar surface -- may be delayed or even go into "hibernation" for a while, a U.S. scientist said on Wednesday.

But contrary to some media reports, this does not mean a new Ice Age is coming, Frank Hill of the National Solar Observatory said in a telephone interview.

"We have not predicted a Little Ice Age," Hill said, speaking from an astronomical meeting in New Mexico. "We have predicted something going on with the Sun."

The appearance of sunspots helps predict solar storms that can interfere with satellite communications and power grids.

Hill and other scientists cited a missing jet stream, fading spots and slower activity near the Sun's poles as signs that our nearest star is heading into a rest period.

"This is highly unusual and unexpected," he said in a statement released on Tuesday. "But the fact that three completely different views of the Sun point in the same direction is a powerful indicator that the sunspot cycle may be going into hibernation."

That hibernation would not begin now, as the current sunspot cycle, the 24th, has recently passed its minimum. Hill and his colleagues pondered a slowdown in sunspot activity in the 25th cycle, expected sometime around 2019.

Funny, when it comes to global warming, many of the “scientist” are willing to make far reaching predictions on little or corrupt data.

Here, they have a direct observation, and they aren’t willing to make any sort of prediction.

Pay no attention to the yellow orb in the sky, it doesn’t affect us.

And in the blink of the eye, nature wipes out all traces of “man-made” global warming. Two more blinks and it wipes out all of man-kind.

The "Ice Age" currently underway has had different periods of maximum glaciation ~ about 20 of them are reflected in Antarctica's Ice. Other evidence suggests up to a half a dozen cycles preceding that record, and recently geologists found that the Gamburtsev Mountain Range is at least 34 million years old with estimates up to 500 million years and during the whole time they've been buried up to their peaks in ice.

Currently they are not only buried in ice, there's another mile packed on top of them!

That is a very long time to be iced up.

The current Ice Age period in the Northern Hemisphere is a mere 2.5 to 5.0 million years in duration.

The next glacial maximum is some 5,000 years overdue.

Eventually the climate model makers will figure it all out ~ this world is normally in an ice age and there's nothing wrong with "warm".

Article states that the connection between solar activity and climate is so uncertain.....yet we should regard AGW with near certainty which carefully chooses theories based upon this same understanding/lack there of....

BEAUTIFUL LOGIC!

They’ll embrace it when they can figure out how to blame American capitalism on it.

We finally warmed to 60 degrees at 1500 hrs but there is a wind gusting to 30 mph out of the west, definitely not cut offs and tank top weather. :-)

And in the blink of the eye, nature wipes out all traces of “man-made” global warming.

The entire premise that "AGW and the tipping point" was a catastrophy that must be avoided was due to the assertion that nature COULD NOT overcome mans effect.

Now that it is obvious that nature is entirely in control, they want to forget that assertion. Being "green" is fastly becoming the "right thing to do"...just because. It is now a moral duty.

Actually being Green is the right thing to do because we do not want to continue to be dependent on oil from the Middle East, Venezuela, and Nigeria. As for here in the USA, I don’t want us to use up the oil that my grandchildren and theirs will need for all the other industrial/civilization uses that it has and will have. Especially important as the world population continues to soar.
