HONIARA - A strong 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of the Solomon Islands on Saturday, but there were no immediate reports of damage and no tsunami warning was issued.
The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the earthquake hit at 3:16pm (0416 GMT) at a depth of 81 kilometres and centered 171 kilometres southeast of the capital Honiara.
Residents on the mainland said they felt a sharp jolt but emergency services said there was no immediate evidence of damage although reports were still being sought from outlying islands.
The Solomons lie in the "Pacific ring of fire", a highly active earthquake zone, and regularly experiences strong tremors.
Depth was 81 kilometers. Earthquakes have to be shallow -- around 15 to 25 kilometers for a tsunami.
No significant reports about this yet...
Not far from where battles took place on Guadalcanal in World War II.
There’s sure a lot of quakin’ goin’ on out there.

Oh... sniggelfritz. I hate it when these guys speak Canadian.
So what's that in English so real people can understand this?
81km = 51.33mi and 171km = 106.3miThank goodness for that Google Unit Conversion App.
Hey wait a sec ... a Depth of 81 kilometers? That's 26,5700 Feet!
(okay, I just checked -- the Mariana Trench is 36,201 feet deep, guess they're right.)
Honiara is located around Henderson Field on the island of Guadalcanal.
The northeast corner of the Pacific plate “ring of fire” is the only one that hasn’t had a significant quake. That’s the Cascadia fault....everyone says it’s not a question of IF, but of WHEN...I’m starting to think that “when” may be closer rather than later..
Nevada has had some quake activity South of Reno that has some folks worried. About 20 small to medium quakes in the last 3 to 4 weeks (2.5 to 4.5)
This video has a visual representation of earthquakes for the week prior to April 27.
