The International Monetary Fund stands ready to help riot-torn Egypt rebuild its economy, the IMF chief said Tuesday as he warned governments to tackle unemployment and income inequality or risk war.
Dominique Strauss-Kahn also said rising food prices could have “potentially devastating consequences” for poorer nations, and warned that Asia’s fast-growing economies faced a risk of a “hard landing”.
Overall, according to the IMF managing director, widening imbalances across and within countries were sparking tensions that threaten to derail the fragile global economic recovery — and could even spark armed conflict.
As Egyptian protesters gathered in their thousands demanding the departure of President Hosni Mubarak, Strauss-Kahn said: “The IMF is ready to help in defining the kind of economic policy that could be put in place.”
In a speech in Singapore, he said rampant unemployment and a growing income gap was a “strong undercurrent of the political turmoil in Tunisia and of rising social strains in other countries”.
Nationwide demonstrations last month led to the ouster of Tunisian strongman Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, and massive street protests are raging in Egypt seeking an end to Mubarak’s more than 30-year rule.
“As tensions between countries increase, we could see rising protectionism — of trade and of finance,” Strauss-Kahn said.
“And as tensions within countries increase, we could see rising social and political instability within nations — even war.”

Looks like IMF is going to “help” out Spain like it “helped” out Tunisia and Egypt
I am amazed at how short sighted some of the freepers are.
MB is already demanding war with Israel, jewish churches have been torched in Tunisia.
This is going to happen if we want it to or not.
If we slow it down and let it transition slowly, it will reduce chaos and strenthgen the islamic crazies.
We need this to spread like wildfire and be disprganized and jumbled.

CAIRO: The Suez Canal Authority reported the canal achieved during the month of July revenues Totaling $406.2 million as a result of 1,554 ships crossing the canal in the month. It comes as an Egyptian-run vessel flying the Panama flag was hijacked earlier this month, but the authority is confident that shipping companies are again beginning to use the waterway despite continued threats from Somali piracy.
The SCA reported tonnage transported through the canal amounted to $71.9 million worth, an increase of 23.3 million from the same month last year, when the canal reported $64.9 million worth of transported goods.
The navigational statistics of the Suez Canal Authority stated on Sunday that the increase in the revenues during the month of July amounted to 6 percent, compared to the corresponding period last year, in addition to an increase in cargo totaling 7 tons and an increase in the number of ships crossing the canal by 33 ships.
The Suez Canal, which is one of the top sources of national income of Egypt has achieved during the fiscal year (2009/2010), which ended in June, revenues amounting to $4.542 billion, equivalent to 25.049 billion Egyptian pounds.”

Um, the islamic crazies - the muslim brotherhood - is already armed and organized. It is the opposition that is clueless and disorganized. We need to slow it down so that the democratic forces have at least a small chance of organizing and pulling out a miraculous victory at the polls. And it will take a miracle, too.
Non-emergency personnel? I wonder how many that is?
Moreover, how many are staying? And how bad does it have to get before they’re pulled?
The US Navy damned sure better have a ship or SOMETHING sitting off the coast, ready to evacuate our embassy people.
