Police Try To Piece Together Ariz. Shooter's Motive (Sheriff Dupnik knew Laughner was a threat...)
NPR ^ | 1/9/11 | Brian Naylor, Ari Shapiro and Audie Cornish

Posted on 01/09/2011 8:49:03 AM PST by jimbo123

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) remained in critical condition Sunday, a day after she was seriously wounded in a shooting rampage that killed at least six people and injured at least a dozen others in Tucson. Police and investigators were trying to piece together the alleged shooter's motive as they searched for a possible accomplice.

Sheriff Dupnik knew that Laughner was a violent threat to the community but did nothing to stop him.

What did Sheriff Dupnik know about Jared Lee Laughner?

And when did he know it?

Perhaps the Sheriff was reluctant to crack down on a New Age homosexual. It would have made him look like a republican neanderthal.

Laugner has been stalking the fed judge on someone’s orders and had an opportunity to take him out.

Took him out.

Sheriff let it happen. Nice scenario.

Clarence the Clown is looking for the 15 minutes of fame that he didn’t get when he stood up against Gov. Brewer and Arizona for the illegal alien invaders. He’s trying to come across as some kind of anti-Arpaio. He’s a worthless, old jerk.

Dupnik was on TV saying that Rush or Beck caused this, and bad-mouthing his own state as a Mecca for Bigots.

I don't see any rhetorical treatment of Dupnik as being off-limits.

This Loughner guy sure reminds me of Stephen Colbert.

NPR should be asking Sheriff Dupnik about when he first found out that Loughner was a violent threat to the community and why he didn’t take any steps to protect its citizens?

On Fox & Friends this morning, it was reported the perp’s mother works for or with the Pima County Board of Supervisors. That the perp had had charges brought against him before, and that those charges were reduced. I posted on another thread earlier, that it’s possible the sheriff could have been involved in the sentencing, or may be aware of how that came about.

I think this is an avenue that should be pursued in light of his off-the-wall remarks in his news conference yesterday. I’m also curious if he pursues the same train of thought today.

To be fair a Sheriff is probably aware of dozens of potentially dangerous people at any one time and has limited powers to deal with people before they’ve done anything illegal.

Might be that the shooters mother helped him out of a few jams with the law. If this is so then the good Sheriff Dupnik holds some responsibility for the shooting.

There should be an investigation into Sheriff Dupnik. Was Loughner receiving special treatment by Dupnik because his mother worked for the Board of Supervisors?

And is Loughner’s mom Sheriff Dupnik’s boss in some fashion? Does she have any influence into his compensation and departmental budget?

The case will be taken over by the Keystone Cops aka..FBI (Personal experience, I worked with them) who are much better at spinning/leaking the press.

It sure doesn't seem like the media is trying very hard to learn about the shooter's background and family.

This is what Time Magazine thinks is important:
Loughner lived with his family in a small, 1,400 sq. ft. house in a part of Tucson quite different from the well-to-do La Toscana. The buildings need renovating, the landscaping is overgrown. Like many of the homes in this blue-collar, multi-racial neighborhood, the Loughners' property has a sign that discourages solicitors. By Saturday evening, the police had set up a perimeter around the house and the immediate homes nearby.

Neighbors say the Loughners kept to themselves, but weren't exactly unfriendly. The family, they say, had a passion for classic cars and were often seen driving up the street in 1970s-era muscle cars that they had worked on and restored. The father would occasionally exchange a neighborly wave. Still, Dawn Cook, 33, says she and her daughter avoided the house. "We go selling Girl Scout cookies door-to-door," says Cook, who works at her husband's Tucson scrapyard. "But we didn't go there," she says of the Loughners' house, because it appeared foreboding with its unkempt plants.
Edward R. Murrow must be whirling in his grave.

Later Dupnik gave a bit more information, saying that the other suspect is a white male, possibly in his 50s. A photograph of the man was later released, but police said they don't know his identity. . . but he has a national radio show weekdays and a show on Fox TV . . . . /sarc

I heard that disgusting man use the horrific tragedy to push his ideological agenda.

I recall the country's hoity-toity liberal elite use the JFK assassination for political advantage to suppress talk radio; and of course B.J., et al tried to use the OKC bombing -- in fact they did use it but not to the extent that they'd hoped, they failed to suppress conservative talk radio again! with their lies.

Liberals even speak of horrific misfortunes as opportunities for their agenda.

To wit, "Democrat pollster Mark Penn appeared on MSNBC’s Hardball and said that President Clinton reconnected with his speech after the Oklahoma City bombings, and Obama needs a similar situation to do the same."

Heh! I said the same thing to my wife last evening during the press conference. Dupnik even knocked over a mic then said "Oh, well, now there's two" or words to that effect. The guy is a doofus as well as a political hack. And now we can suspect he may have some association with the perp or his mother.

Yes, the FBI will start to spin, but I wasn't impressed with the local FBI spokesman, either.

That's not how it works. The police do the legwork, make the bust and do the investigation. The DA is the one who issues the warrants, does the plea bargaining, and sets the charges. I'm not saying the Sheriff couldn't have "queered" the investigation (using the old def of "queered", as in mucked it up, obfuscated the "facts"), but I know in our county if the above had happened, the case would have been moved to another county, to avoid the appearance of favoritism. This Sheriff is starting to smell...

Forgot to include: The Sheriff has nothing to do with the sentencing. That’s between the DA, the state laws, and the judge (who is unfortunately often the wild card).

As Darkwing104 points out, the FBI will take control, indeed has taken custody of the perp, and is now controlling the investigation. Fox News has them having another news conference in about an hour, supposedly with the sheriff, but we'll see just how much he contributes.

If any investigation occurs, it would have to come from outside the department, and outside the Board of Supervisors. And from what I've heard about the mayor, he's not much better than Dupnik. I hope it happens, but have real doubt at this time...

That's what I was getting at. She works/worked for the county board of supervisors. He's the county sheriff. What relationship do they/did they have? What input could he have had in the sentencing process? The whole point is, he could very well be too close to perp's past to be involved now in this case. It should be looked in to. Whether it will or not is anyone's guess. I'm sensing (the FBI has now taken custody of the perp) the system is starting to close around the sheriff.

Also, this sheriff has been a very vocal opponent of the Arizona immigration law, stating publicly he wouldn't enforce it. The mayor of Tucson has also spoken publicly against the law. He's also a Democrat. Regardless of how your county functions, I see at least a semblance of political machine in Pima County, and wouldn't be surprised if the sheriff is protected politically.

There wasn’t news coverage, she does these meet and greets all the time, pretty much every weekend. As for constituents maybe the people talking to her might have been recording, but of course those are the ones most likely to get shot. Keep in mind this wasn’t some sort of “town hall” or “town meeting”, it was Gabby hanging out in a public place with a table in front of her and a sign behind her just chatting with anybody that came on. It’s pretty much the only thing she does that I agree with, she’s very much into being available to the people she represents to just chat, no speech, no agenda, just chat.

I do believe this “sheriff” knows, and knew, more than he’s letting on. That’s why he immediately tried to point the blame away from himself. He’s been sheriff for 30 years. He knows how things work. And jumping out in front with a bunch of crap that can be proven to be crap is not a smart thing to do. He pannicked!

In the first couple of very confusing hours after the shooting, the left was absolutely convinced that the gunman was some sort of "teabagger." I even heard an woman state senator from AZ, a Sen. Lopez, claim live on Fox in an interview with Shepard Smith, that the gunman was an Afghan war vet. The depths leftists will travel to smear their "enemies" is certainly revealing. I wish I could say it is also shocking, but nothing the left does, be it craven or corrupt, surprises me anymore.

There are documents online that say Amy Loughner is a Park Manager at Agua Caliente Park in Tucson or the surrounding area. The area where the perp lives is in Marana, which parallels I 10 for about 10 miles or so north of Tucson and down to county areas in the NW metro area.

Wouldn’t you have liked to know what his mother and father do for a living? If he has brothers and/or sisters? Pets?

Admittedly, the family has retreated behind their fence (and who would blame them?), but there must be more that is available even without the family’s assistance. Let’s hear more about whether or not mom works for the AZ dnr. What has been the parental involvement with the disruptive son? For starters, does the kid have a job? If not, who paid for the pricey gun he used ($500 plus $17 for the clip)?
