The shooting of Representative Gabrielle Giffords and others at a neighborhood meeting in Arizona on Saturday set off what is likely to be a wrenching debate over anger and violence in American politics.
While the exact motivations of the suspect in the shootings remained unclear, an Internet site tied to the man, Jared Lee Loughner, contained antigovernment ramblings. And regardless of what led to the episode, it quickly focused attention on the degree to which inflammatory language, threats and implicit instigations to violence have become a steady undercurrent in the nations political culture.
Clarence W. Dupnik, the Pima County sheriff, seemed to capture the mood of the day at an evening news conference when he said it was time for the country to do a little soul-searching.
Its not unusual for all public officials to get threats constantly, myself included, Sheriff Dupnik said. Thats the sad thing about whats going on in America: pretty soon were not going to be able to find reasonable, decent people willing to subject themselves to serve in public office.

It’s all Sarah Palin’s fault!!!
The constant drum roll of demonization coming lately from the likes of Dean and Nadler are at fault.
Yep, the new favorite word...
Clarence W. Dupnik, the Pima County sheriff, is a wild-eyed JBT, based on his rambling rant yesterday.
And just who was the politician who said “if they bring a knife, we bring a gun”????
I haven’t had the stomach to follow all this, so I don’t know if anyone has mentioned this. I’m so disgusted by how the libs jumped on this with the blame game without any facts.
I just hope people see through them and they are further discredited.
What we need to do is loudly quote Obama's violent rhetoric. He told people to "Get in their face" And 'If they bring a knife, you bring a gun".
The thing is that they are always correct
and you are always wrong (or even evil)
there is no need to discuss the obvious.
(at least in their mind of minds).
what the hell is a JBT?
your posting would be more interesting if you made it clear by using English and not Englishese.
How the bloody hell are we all to know what a JBT is?
This......from MSNBC? Olberman. Madow. Schultz.........
The press are the ones that are irresponsible and ratchet up the rhetoric. They are responsible in part for this. They create controversy and report on it. This story of the shooting is a prime example of them directing acrimony toward a group they disagree with politically. The crazy accusatory partisan rhetoric of the press is destroying our country.
Grandma will tell you. It means jack booted thug.
Why did this sheriff ignore the timebomb/Loughner? How did this timebomb have a gun with his history of outbursts including, On Dec. 13, he wrote: I dont feel good: Im ready to kill a police officer! I can say it.
Below is a link to an excellent article about this insane killer:
Suspect in rampage called very disturbed
TIM STELLER Arizona Daily Star azdailysun.com
The man arrested for opening fire at a community meeting held by U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords Saturday killing six people and injuring 13 others disrupted classes at Pima Community College, tried to manipulate his dreams and posted rambling messages on the Internet.
The suspected shooter is Jared Lee Loughner, a 22-year-old who lives on the northwest side. He is mentally unstable and may have had an accomplice, Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik said Saturday evening.
A former classmate of Loughner at Pima, from which he was suspended Sept. 29 for code-of-conduct violations, said he was obviously very disturbed.
He disrupted class frequently with nonsensical outbursts, said Lynda Sorenson, who took a math class with Loughner last summer at Pima Community Colleges Northwest campus.
Dupnik said the suspected shooter has made death threats before and been contacted by law-enforcement officers. The threats werent against Giffords, Dupnik said.
Investigators are looking for a second person who may be an accomplice, Dupnik said.
We are not convinced he acted alone, Dupnik said of the shooter. We have photos, he said, of a man in his 50s.
Theres some reason to believe that (the shooter) came to this location with another individual. And theres reason to believe the other individual would in some way be involved, he said.
Loughner has several online accounts, which suggest he has spent most of his life on the northwest side: His MySpace profile says he attended Thornydale Elementary School, Tortolita Middle School and Mountain View High School.
As a middle school student, Loughner was kind of an outcast, said Shannin Macey, who said via e-mail she attended Tortolita and Mountain View with him.
In high school, Loughner was in jazz band and played the saxophone, but he dropped out in junior year, said Tommy Marriotti, who was a high-school friend of Loughner. At the time he dropped out, Loughner was having drug problems, Marriotti said, but he seemed to do well once he started taking classes at Pima.
Loughner attended Pima courses from summer 2005 until he withdrew in October after his suspension, the college said.
He tried to enlist in the Army in 2008 but was rejected, said First Sgt. Brian Homme, who oversees Army recruiting in Tucson. Loughner was sent to Phoenix to take a test and physical, but he was found to be unqualified, Homme said.
Loughner registered to vote for the first time in 2006, said Chris Roads, Pima Countys registrar of voters. He registered as an independent and last voted in the 2008 general election.
Sorenson, Loughners classmate at Pima, said he was asked to leave the pre-algebra class several times and eventually was barred from class.
Pima officials said in a news release that from February to September 2010, Loughner had five contacts with PCC police for classroom and library disruptions at Northwest and West campuses.
Another Pima classmate, Lydian Ali, said Loughner would frequently laugh aloud to himself during the advanced-poetry class they attended. Only about 16 people were in the class, so Loughners behavior stood out, Ali said.
It almost seemed like he was on his own planet, because his comments would have nothing to do with what we were talking about, Ali said.
Loughners online accounts contain some political comments but are dominated by bizarre discussions of his desire to establish a new currency and his disdain for what he considered the publics low literacy rates. He also wrote threatening and despairing messages.
WOW! Im glad i didnt kill myself. Ill see you on National T.v.! This is foreshadow .... why doesnt anyone talk to me? .. he posted on MySpace Dec. 14.
On Dec. 13, he wrote: I dont feel good: Im ready to kill a police officer! I can say it.
In a posting on YouTube, Loughner wrote repeatedly about a new currency. Im thinking of creating a new currency, he wrote. Therefore, Im thinking of a design for my new coins size, shape, color, material, and image to start a new money system.
He also wrote repeatedly about literacy. In a message on YouTube, Loughner wrote: The majority of people, who reside in District-8 are illiterate hilarious. I dont control your English grammar structure, but you control your English grammar structure.
In a message posted on his MySpace account, titled Goodbye friends,Loughner said: Dear friends...please dont be mad at me. The literacy rate is below 5%. I havent talked to one person who is literate. It was unclear when it was posted.
In a MySpace profile, Loughner said My favorite interest was reading, and I studied grammar. Conscience dreams were a great study in college. Conscious dreaming is trying to manipulate your dreams, an interest Loughner pursued, Marriotti said.
He lists among his favorite books Mein Kampf and The Communist Manifesto. But he also includes a broad variety of other titles, including: Animal Farm, Brave New World, To Kill a Mockingbird, and One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest.
In another YouTube message, Loughner said: I know whos listening: Government Officials, and the People. Nearly all the people, who dont know this accurate information of a new currency, arent aware of mind control and brainwash methods. If I have my civil rights, then this message wouldnt have happen.
In conclusion, my ambition - is for informing literate dreamers about a new currency; in a few days, you know Im conscience dreaming! Thank you!
In a YouTube video dated Dec. 15, titled Introduction: Jared Loughner, he describes himself as a U.S. military recruit who had applied to join the Army.
In the video, Loughner makes a rambling mention of MEPS in Phoenix an apparent reference to the Military Entrance Processing Station in the state capital that all Arizona recruits from every branch of service pass through before leaving for basic training. Every United States military recruit at MEPS in Phoenix is receiving one mini bible before the tests, it said. Jared Loughner is a United States military recruit at MEPS in Phoenix. Therefore, Jared Loughner is receiving one mini bible before the tests.
I didnt write a belief on my Army application and the recruiter wrote on the application: None.
Sgt. Homme declined to say why Loughner was rejected, citing confidentiality laws.
Loughner has had at least two minor run-ins with police, online court records show.
In October 2007, Loughner was cited by the Pima County Sheriffs Department for possession of drug paraphernalia, a charge that was dismissed in November 2007 when he completed a diversion program.
One year later, in October 2008, Loughner faced a local charge in Marana Municipal Court. That charge was also dismissed following the completion of a diversion program in March 2009.
Court records indicate the Marana case file is due to be purged in December 2013. Its unclear what the exact charge was.
Grant Wiens, 22, attended Mountain View High School with Loughner, although they were not in the same grade. Wiens also took a class at Pima Community College with Loughner, where they occasionally talked, he said.
He was a guy in high school who definitely had his opinions on stuff and didnt seem to care what people thought of him, Wiens said. He did his own thing.
Star reporters Carol Ann Alaimo, Alex Dalenberg, Fernanda Echavarri, Patrick Finley, Ernesto Portillo Jr. and Sarah Trotto contributed to this report.
” ... if Letterman actually meant to smear Palins older daughter, Bristol. Either way, its classless, although an argument could be made that Bristol is somehow fair-game as she gave media interviews, etc. I dont buy that argument, fwiw.
But even if Letterman did mean Bristol: wheres the apology, now that it should have become clear to him that it was the underage Willow who attended the game?
Jim Treacher has great coverage of the entire episode here, including a new video where Letterman suggests Palins daughter (again, we dont know which daughter) is a prostitute: http://jimtreacher.com/archives/002078.html"
Listening to this crap reminds me of the Nazis torching the Reichstag and blaming the Communists for it. Then it was on to the Jews because they had to blame somebody for the bad economy and Germany's decline.
Earlier I was reading the local paper readers comments (Anchorage Daily News) about the shooting, the fury is reaching very volatile levels, the posters appear to sound just like the anti- Joe Miller and Sarah Palin haters, except they are openly discussing terror threats against the Palins in Wasilla.
I would say right now is a very dangerous time indeed, and I sincerely hope there is no incident of violence against the Palins, because its my home town they are targeting, my neighbors. My turf.
Good point. I'd mentioned something along those lines in an earlier thread:
"I'd venture to say most Americans are well past falling for the lies and dirty tricks used by the far left MSM, politicians and talking heads. This kind of garbage was a key element in the MASSIVE DEFEAT the Democrats suffered in November '10. Continued use of these tactics just adds nails to their coffin. We've woken up...and we're not going back to sleep!"
Well, I'll take a stab at it. He was f'ing crazy? Sound about right?
A schizophrenic loner goes on a shooting rampage and the Left is trying to blame Sarah Palin and Tea Parties. Shameful.
I was but a young child many years ago when another obviously crazy person tried to take out a president. Seemed we had the good sense back then to refrain from politicizing John Hinkley's act of insanity. He was crazy, plain and simple, same as yesterday.
I think the Left is certifiably insane. Imagine if some nut took a shot at Obama. There would be buildings and cars burning as we speak and a whole lotta dead White folks.
Who the f... is Dupnick, anyway? This shooter is no different than the whack job that shot Reagan, or the guy that shot John Lennon. Why give him any credibility at all?
Barney Fife should keep his brilliant analysis to himself.
Hi, Grandpa Dave -
Thanks for such a great run down of this killer.
The way I see the story of the week is this is a manifestation of what I was fearing and expounding on eight or so years ago for months - that if we dont squash terrorism as a tool in political discourse we will revert to a civilization of city states and walled cities... where people will associate only with those who they know well, and do their best to stay out of contact with everyone else.
What bugs me most about the MTP panel just aired here is that not a single one of these Dems has any clue that the way they jammed bills through into legislation during the last years despite having so much public opposition to much of it has created the lack of civility. Backroom deals and parliamentary tricks do not build trust in government. Perhaps they should take to heart that the American people currently rate Congress as low as it has ever been for such reasons. The blame the volatile atmosphere on everyone outside the Congress, when in fact it is due to themselves.
Glenn Beck has been warning about this (worrying about violence) and asking people to pray for the country for nearly a year now... again he has been very ahead of the curve.
Well this Grandma does. :-)
And it appears frequently on LEO threads.
(Pssst I think your underwear is too tight)
Have a good evening dear.
